3 LIVESTOCK CORNER NEWS By Sam Womble, CEA, AG/NR County and Major Show Steer Validation Validation will take place Monday, June 16 th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Bandera Veterinary Clinic. Exhibitors and parents are required to attend to sign necessary paperwork. If you have any questions, please call the Extension Office. State Fair of Texas Validation For those of you that ordered State Fair of Texas validation tags, plans are to validate those projects on Monday morning, June 16 th. I will contact you to make appropriate arrangements. Poultry News The deadline to order chicks for the 2014 State Fair of Texas is Friday, June 20 th. Broiler orders for San Antonio, Houston and Austin will be due in October. If you are interested in ordering Turkeys for the major livestock shows (San Antonio, Houston, Star of Texas) please contact the Extension Office by Tuesday, July 8 th. There are some great resources posted on the Poultry Science website including a Youth Poultry Newsletter. Check it out at TURKEY ORDER Order Deadline: June 23rd Cost $3.50 per turkey poult If you are interested in showing turkeys at the County Stock Show and/or Major Stock Shows, you must place and pay for your order by June 23rd. This is the only time you can order turkey poults. Turkeys arrive in early November. For more information Extension Office Animal Projects If you need help with your animal projects or would like to schedule a visit, please call or stop by the office. State Fair of Texas The 2014 premium list is available online at Livestock Project Reminders I know many of you have cattle, lamb and goat projects on feed. Keep in mind the following: Health - consider collecting stool samples on your projects (especially lambs and goats) and work with your veterinarian on a preventative health program. Some of your projects may need a booster so find out what was administered and when. Be mindful of internal parasites. Cattle should be wormed every 100 days, lambs and goats every 30 days. Feed - cattle should be eating around 2% of their body weight a day. Lambs and goats 2-3%. Be consistent with the amount you feed daily along with your feeding schedule. Facilities - make sure your pens are safe and keep them clean. Your projects need to have a cool comfortable place to get out of the sun. Shade cloth and fans work well. Showmanship - while you have some time this summer, PRACTICE with your projects. Tie, brush, handle, lead, brace, etc... Prospect shows are a good opportunity to practice as well so take advantage of them. In addition, camps are offered for livestock and horse judging team members. These camps are excellent opportunities for you to gain some very valuable skills. 4 4-H ers Going to State Roundup Performing Prose at the State 4-H Roundup Share the Fun Contest, June 12th is Samantha Shaps. Samantha placed 2nd at District Roundup earning a spot to advance to state competition. Courtney Flach will participate in the State 4-H Livestock Judging Contest, June 11th at State Roundup, College Station. Courtney pictured with her brother Corey was the 1st place senior individual at the District Livestock Judging Contest. The Senior Horse Judging team members of Hannah Buettner, Cheyanne Jenkins, Cheyanne Van Vleet, (not pictured) and Sarah Butler along with Coach Dina Buettner, will compete June 11th at the State Horse Judging contest, Texas 4-H State Roundup, College Station. The Horse Team was 2nd in District, and Hannah Buettner was 1st place individual. Page 4

Medina Clay Target/Bandera 4-H Shotgun Team received a sporting clay trap machine from Bill Ethridge, Chairman of the S.A.L.E. Junior Shoot-out. Mr. Ethridge thanked the team for the volunteer work they assisted with during the Shoot-out.
