Dismissed livestock will not be eligible to show, therefore unable to be sold at the Fair Sale. Fairgrounds Cleanup Clothing Event Project Updates *We will not be having Overall Showmanship this year, instead we will be doing a Master Showman of each species following their regular showmanship classes. The Junior, Intermediate & Senior Winners of each species will come back in and compete for the Master Showman of their species. County Fair News County Fair Announcements 4-H Calendar *This year some of the Appanoose County 4-H clubs will be having a Cake Walk on Monday, July 16th from 4-7 on the small stage, or in the exhibit building if weather is a concern. We have a few clubs already signed up, but if your club is interested and hasn't already signed up give us a call and let us know. 1

2 APPANOOSE COUNTY 4-H ANNOUNCEMENTS Sheep Announcement All lambs, including market, breeding and bucket/ bottle, will need to be inspected by the official fair veterinarian prior to unloading at the fairgrounds. Inspection times are Sunday, July 15, 6:00-8:00pm and Monday, July 16, 7:00-9:00am. All inspections will take place on the fairgrounds. This will eliminate congestion at the barns. ALL SHEEP MUST BE SLICK SHORN AND SHOW READY PRIOR TO INSPEC- TIONS (when applicable). All feed for sheep must be kept in a closed container on the fairgrounds. APPANOOSE COUNTY FAIR 4-H NEWS Beef Carcass Schedule All Carcass Beef must be weighed in at the Sale Barn at 7:00pm on July 8th! If you have any questions or are no longer planning on doing carcass, please contact the Extension Office at ! The front of the t-shirt is our Appanoose County 4-H T-Shirt that is used each year for showing and Russell s Channel Seed logo is on the back of the shirts. Every Appanoose County 4-H member has a shirt here at the Extension Office that may be picked up anytime! Please send a Thank You to show your appreciation! Russell Webb, Certified Seed Technology Advisor, Hwy 5, Centerville, IA APPANOOSE COUNTY 4-H NEWS Fair Dates Appanoose County Fair July 16-21, 2018 Iowa State Fair August 9-19, 2018 Youth Council News The next Youth Council meeting will be on July 9, 2018 at 6:00pm. We will be meeting at the Fairgrounds to clean the Exhibit Building. Please bring a power washer, a squeegee and broom if you have one and wear old clothes! We need EVERYONE to be here to help! We will be sending a reminder out as well! 2

3 Animals to be sold must be registered with the sale committee by 10:00 am, Friday, July 20th. Each 4-H member must sell their own animal at the livestock sale. Check your ear tag numbers before you draw! Livestock Auction The animals will be set by the number that you give us. There will be NO deviation from the printed sale order!! If animals 1, 2 and 3 are supposed to sell together, make sure those are the numbers that are in the ring! Youth Project Loans from FSA The United States Department of Agriculture s Farm Service Agency, FSA, makes operating loans to individual rural youth, aged 10-20, to establish and operate income producing projects. These projects must be of modest size and be initiated, developed and carried out by rural youth participating in 4-H or FFA. Each project must be part of an organized and supervised, program of work. It must be planned and operated with the assistance of the youth s parents and organization leaders or advisor, produce sufficient income to repay the loan and provide the youth with practical business and Education experience. These loans can finance nearly any kind of agricultural income producing project with an annual or term repayment plan, depending on the specific project. Maximum loan amount is $5000 per individual with a fixed interest rate. The interest rate changes periodically, but once the loan is closed, the rate will not change. If you would like further information, please contact the Monroe LOCAL County FSA 4-H Office NEWS at Animal Ethics 4-H is built on the fundamentals of kind and humane treatment of animals and nothing less will be accepted at the Appanoose County Fair. This means not only ethical handling, but also adequate food and water and clean bedding for all animals. As leaders and parents, it is your right and responsibility to step in and help teach your youth the correct treatment of animals. If you are not comfortable doing that, find a 4-H Committee Member, Livestock Superintendent or Extension staff person to help! In continued support of our area youth in agriculture, Farmers Bank of Northern Missouri is proud to make agricultural loans available to FFA and 4-H members in our market areas of Northern Missouri and Southern Iowa. In addition to providing financial assistance in their projects, the program can also be a financial education tool. By developing financial statements and cash flows with the students, they can also develop an understanding and evaluate their enterprise performance. FFA & 4-H Loans are subject to the following: FFA & 4-H Youth Ag Loan Program Interest rate is determined by subtracting the student's GPA from a base interest rate, currently 7.00% APR* as of 1/1/18. Base rate is subject to change. Up to a $10,000-line limit can be available for applicable projects. Amounts greater than $10,000 can be reviewed on a case by case basis. Repayment period is dependent on loan purchase. Student must have a qualified co-applicant, unless they are 18 and credit worthy. Stay Alert At Fair! The County Fair setting brings animals into a situation of being around people and surroundings that they are not familiar with. Calm animals may become spooked and act abnormally under these conditions. Please alert all family members to exercise extreme caution around all animals in the fair setting. 3

4 Fairgrounds Clean Up: Each club will participate in Fairgrounds Clean Up. Each evening of cleanup will begin at 7:00pm. Wear old clothes! Please bring weed eaters, clippers, push mowers, paint brushes, rollers and trays, etc. A list of tasks for each evening will be provided. Assigned days are as follows: Monday, July 9, 2018 Dandy Doers, B.V. Sodbusters, Rustic Roots, Pleasant Works, T&C Trailblazers & Cooking Club. Tuesday, July 10, 2018 M&M Pioneers, Wells Rustlers, Exline Ramblers, FFA & Moravia Farmhands. Thursday, July 12, 2018 Decorating Booths Monday, July 23, 2018 Franklin Farmhands, Stall Stompers and Youth Council Appanoose County Clothing Event The Appanoose County Clothing Event, Fashion Revue, Clothing Selection and the $15.00 Challenge, has been scheduled for Thursday, July 12th. The event will be held at the Appanoose County Fairgrounds. The schedule will be as follows: Seniors: 8:00am Intermediate: 9:30am Juniors: 1:00pm The $15.00 Challenge Outfits must be selected and purchased from a garage sale, consignment store or resale shop including Goodwill, Salvation Army or other stores of this type. (Garage Sale Free Box items would qualify.) The cost of the outfit must be $15.00 or less, not including shoes, accessories or undergarments. You MUST have receipts included on the report form! Fashion Revue You must model a garment or outfit that you have constructed, hand knitted, machine knitted or crocheted during the current 4-H year. Garments or outfits consisting of 1-3 pieces such as party clothes, tailored suites, vest, slacks, skirt, active sportswear and/or coats are acceptable as Fashion Revue entries. All other accessories and undergarments may be made or selected. Clothing Selection Select and/or purchase an outfit that represents your goal or intended use for the selected outfit. You will have an individual plan or county experience(s) in choosing shopping alternatives, evaluating fit, quality and constructions features, price and cost comparison. Clothing items specifically sewn for the 4Her are not eligible. 4

5 Project Updates PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT Myra McGill prepared a packet of helpful information if you have a photography project for the Fair this year. These packets will be available at the Extension Office any time! Myra McGill will be available Thursday, July 3rd from 4-6 pm at Myra's Studio to answer any questions about photography project goal sheets and help with picking out mats for your photos. She has tons of photo mats starting at $1. If this time doesn't work for you, you can call Myra at and she will reschedule a time to meet with you. HORSE PROJECT 2018 Horse Project Meetings are scheduled for: Sunday May 13th; 6 pm-southedge Arena Friday, May 25th ; 6 pm-fairgrounds Sunday, June 3rd; 6 pm-southedge Arena Friday, June 8th; 6 pm-fairgrounds Friday, June 15th; 6 pm-fairgrounds Friday, June 22nd; 6 pm-fairgrounds Friday, June 29th; 6 pm -Fairgrounds Friday, July 6th; 6 pm-fairgrounds DOG PROJECT Josie Harvey will be holding Dog Project meetings again this year. These meetings are not mandatory, but a great way to prepare for showing your dog at the County Fair! Dog Project Meetings will begin on Thursday, May 17th, at 5:30 pm. These meetings will continue weekly until the week before Fair! Meetings will be held at the Fairgrounds. Join the Facebook page Appanoose County dog project for updates. County Fair News LIVESTOCK SUPERINTENDENTS Livestock Superintendents are on site to help the fair run smoothly and to assist youth with any issues they may have during the fair. Livestock Superintendents will also be taking disciplinary action, or referring you to the Discipline Committee if necessary. Please conduct yourself in an ethical and proper manner at all times. You are a representation, not only of yourself, but your 4-H club and the Appanoose County 4-H Program! COMMUNICATION EVENT The 2018 Communications Event will be held on Tuesday, July 10th, 2018 at 9:00am. The Communications Event consists of the Educational Presentation, Working Exhibit, Share the Fun and Extemporaneous Speaking. The event will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 310 N. Main St. in Centerville. Please call the office at if you have questions! IOWA STATE FAIR ENTRY State Fair livestock entries close at 11:59pm on July 1st. To avoid a potentially panic-filled and stressful experience, log in well before then and complete your entries! Reminder: Families can pay online, or pay by check. The county office does not do this for you! 6 County Fair News PREMISE ID INFORMATION In order to sell swine at the Appanoose County Fair Livestock Auction, you MUST have a premise ID number. If you do not, you need to apply for one IMMEDIATELY! If you do have a number please contact the Extension Office at or stop in to pick up the necessary form. We need this information as soon as possible! WORK SCHEDULES / HAVE FUN AT THE FAIR! Work schedules and judging schedules have been sent to the leaders. Be sure to check with them to know what your responsibilities are. BE THERE WHEN YOU ARE EXPECTED! We hope that you ALL have a great time at the 2018 Appanoose County Fair! If you have questions or need help at any time during the Fair, please don t hesitate to find a staff member from the Appanoose County Extension office. EXHIBIT FORMS PHOTOGRAPHY LABELS FOOD PRESERVATION LABEL Remember that each static exhibit (excluding photography, which is covered in the photography label) must have the following 3 questions answered: 1. What was your exhibit goal(s)? 2. What steps did you take to learn or do this? 3. What were the most important things you learned? These forms may be handwritten, typed or done on the computer. Youth just completing grades 5-12 use white paper. Youth just completing 4th grade use light green paper. 4th grade youth are ineligible to exhibit at the Iowa State Fair. Exhibits entered in the county only Creative Arts class use light pink paper. (Colored paper available at the Extension Office.) Blank forms are available at the Extension Office, however, if you wish to do them on your computer, the same format should be used as the forms developed by this office as a courtesy to our judges. For display at the County Fair, these forms are to be placed in a plastic sleeve and attached to the exhibit. All photography exhibits must have a photography label attached to the exhibit. These are available at the Extension Office Following is the information received about writing good goals for your photography exhibits. This question was posed to the state staff about using the goal I want a good picture of my cat. Following is their response. For a beginner member, a project goal of I want a good picture of my cat could be okay. However, they then need to learn what a good picture is, and what they need to do to get a good picture. We would hope that as a member works towards the goal during the year, by fair time the exhibit goal should be more defined. My goal with this photo exhibit is to show what I learned about photo composition and placement of the subject in the photo. They would then go on to explain how their photo of the cat accomplished that goal, why this photo is a good illustration of composition, steps involved in taking this photo and getting to that point, etc. More experienced members should continually challenge themselves by setting more advanced goals relating to photo processing, use of color, speed, light, etc. There are many things they can do in the photography area. Any preserved goods entered at the fair will need a food preservation label adhered to the exhibit. These are available at the Extension Office. Current USDA and/or Iowa State University guidelines for home food preservation methods must be used. The Extension Office has the source book So Easy To Preserve available to answer your questions or you can call our toll free hotline at Exhibit Building Supervisors Needed! We are looking for volunteers to supervise and guard the exhibits in the Exhibit Building for the 2018 Appanoose County Fair as a result of some destruction of projects in the past years. We d like to do all that we can to help prevent that from happening in the future. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Pat Dole at

7 County Fair continued... MANURE SPREADER Each club and FFA chapter is responsible for providing one manure spreader for the week of the fair. Spreaders are to be brought to the Fairgrounds on Sunday, July 15th! This meeting will also be the After Fair Meeting. Anyone is welcome to attend and share their comments about the Appanoose County Fair and bring forth any changes that they think may best benefit the youth! 4-H FOOD STAND We need each club to bring 1 dozen brownies, 1 dozen cookies and 2 pies (per CLUB, not per person!). Six 4-H members and 2 adults are expected to work in the food stand at the time the club is scheduled to work. Please remember, the 4-H Foundation gets a portion of the money from the food stand which they use to pay 1/2 of the 4-H fee for every Appanoose County 4-H member!
