They can be picked up at the Extension Office. Please be sure to read your fairbook carefully, there are several changes from last year! Youth Program Assistant Hired Chrys Bregar has been hired as the new Youth Program Assistant. Chrys was involved in 4-H as a youth, both in Pennsylvania and in Iowa. She will be focusing on expanding STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) youth programming in Marion County and assisting Mindy. McCorkle Hardware, Animal Health Center of Knoxville, Charging Skunk Farms, Knoxville Farm and Home for donating supplies for horse first aid kits The County Youth Council for Organizing a great Clover Kids Campout and the Clover Kids who attended Get your Ticket to Success at the 2014 State 4-H & Youth Conference Registration materials are ready. Remember to invite your friends, the State 4-H & Youth Conference is not just for 4-H members, it is for everyone who has completed 8th grade at the end of this school year. Registration forms and payment are due to the Marion County Extension Office by Friday, May 16th. If you would like more information or registration forms for your friends please contact the Marion County Extension Office or check out: StateConference/. Please check out this link to see the many different workshops that will be available this year. Homemade Games & Puzzle Workshop May 8 Create games and puzzles using wood and household objects. These are some of the games that our grandparents would have enjoyed playing and creating when they were young. You will leave having created at least two games with instruction to make numerous others! This workshop will be held at the Extension Office May 8 at 6pm. There will be a $15 fee. Please call the office to register. Vertical Gardening Workshop May 13 Use reclaimed wood and mason jars to create a fun and space saving way to garden. This workshop will be held at the Extension Office at 6pm. All material will be provided for a $10 fee. 4-H Trend Spotters National 4-H Council & the 4-H Mall is looking for 4-H Trend Spotters. These members spot the next generation of style, fashion, and 4-H in their communities. We want 4-H youth to be the eyes and ears of the 4-H Mall with your friends, family, and fellow club members. 4-H Mall is always striving to introduce amazing new products, and no one knows more about what 4-H'ers want than 4-H'ers themselves. You will send one product idea per month based on specific themes coming from 4-H Mall. Product suggestions can be original ideas or existing products that you think would be cool with a clover on them. If 4-H Mall decided to make it, you will be involved in the design process from start to finish, and you'll get that product free to show off to your friends and family! After one year of participation we will send you some free 4-H Gear. 3 ISU College of Design Workshops The College of Design at Iowa State University is pleased to offer a number of summer youth programs geared toward immersing participants in the world of art and design. Middle and high school students can choose from the one-day Explore Design! or three-day Design Innovation workshop, or sign up for both consecutively. Students who will be sophomores, juniors or seniors in fall 2014 can also participate in Design Condensed, a weeklong residential camp experience. Detailed information about camp and workshop content, locations, dates and registration information can be found at New Canning Method Approved for Fair The Ball FreshTECH Automatic Canning System is a new way to can at home and has been approved for use in 4-H exhibits. You can also access more information, as well as a video at, Cooking Day May 17 Would you like to have a food judged that you cannot show at the fair judged? Then our Cooking Day is for you. It is a chance to show how you prepare a food and have the end result judged. Registration is due May 5. 4-H members and Clover Kids can participate. You can learn more at Marion County Fair Camping Forms 2014 Marion County Fair Camping forms are available at: You can stop by the Extension Office to fill one out. Please remember that all camping forms are due at the Extension Office by no later than June 1st! CAMPING CHANGE FOR THIS YEAR: No camping anywhere other than in designated camping areas. Absolutely no camping in the livestock parking area. National 4-H Shooting Sports Meet Four members of Bullets and Bows tried out for the Iowa 4-H National shotgun team in April. Three of the team won places on the team. Cody Shives placed first, Josh Rawlings placed second and Travis Poffenbarger is a team alternate. Iowa s team will be going to Grand Island, Nebraska in the last week of June to take part in the national competition. Photography Hike There will be a photography hike held at Lake Red Rock on June 21. Check the June Newsletter for more information Science Club We are looking at starting a science club next fall. This club would be able to explore a wide variety of scientific topics such as nature, robotics, geocaching, or the science behind making food. Please call the Extension Office if you are interested in joining a club like this and/or have ideas of topics that would be fun to explore. Volunteers to work with the club will also be needed.

4 Completion Award Change This year there will be a change in year end completion awards this year. In the past, first year members have received a 1st year 4-H pin, 3rd year members have received a yard sign, and all other members received a variety of 4-H merchandise. Marion County 4-H is going to move to giving an award to Outstanding 4-Her. A member will need to attend 6 regular 4-H meetings, participate in a service project (individual or club) and turn in a completed record book to receive the award. Anyone receiving an Outstanding 4-Her award will receive an Outstanding 4-Her t-shirt. All first year members will continue to receive the first year pin and third year members will still receive a yard sign. This change will not effect project awards. Fair Clean-up Day June 29 All 4-H members are required to take part in the fair clean up day on June 29 at 2pm on the Marion County Fairgrounds. The work done that day helps make the fair something that Marion County can be proud of. Members who cannot be there on June 29th should contact the office to arrange an alternate day. Summit at Central College Central College will be hosting a free Iowa Student for Tobacco Education and Prevention conference on June 11. Registration will be due June 4. Be a Bug Overnight Camp June 17&18 Come Be a Bug for a night. Marion County 4-H will be hosting an overnight camp where 3rd through 5th graders will learn about how bugs pollinate flowers, how agricultural engineers solve problems, and design their own manual pollinator. 4-H members will do fun hands-on activities while learning about engineering process. Youth will arrive for the camp at 5pm on June 17th, spend the night and be picked up at 5 pm on June 18th. The cost of this camp will be $25, which will include three meals, snacks, and activities. Enrollment will be held to the first 25 kids to complete their registrations. A waiting list will be kept after the session is full. White Breast Beavers Dance May 10th White Breast Beavers will be hosting a dance fundraiser on May 10th at the Extension Office from 7pm 11pm. Cost will be a $3 admission for 4-H members and $4 admission for non 4-H members. Refreshments will be available for purchase. Clover Kids Campout 18 Clover Kids came to the camp out hosted by our 4-H County Council on April The Clover Kids did activities and science experiments, had snacks, watched movies, and slept in the Extension Office gym.

5 4-H Communications Day Saturday, June 14 Marion County Extension Office 4-H Educational Presentations Every 4-H'er has the opportunity and the responsibility of giving an Educational Presentation to their 4-H club each year. Do you have a special interest/hobby you would like to share? Give an Educational Presentation about it. An Educational Presentation includes: Catchy Title Introduction Body Conclusion Once you have shared your Educational Presentation with your 4-H club, why not enter the county competition! Juniors should not exceed 15 minutes and Int/Senior should not exceed 25 minutes. 4-H Share the Fun 4-H'ers can sing, dance, play the piano or other musical instrument, tell jokes, give a dramatic reading, put on a skit, or perform any other special talent they would like to share with the audience. Share the Fun acts can be performed by individual 4 -H members, small groups, or the entire 4-H club. Skits must not exceed 8 minutes in length. Get your club together to entertain others. 4-H Extemporaneous Speaking Extemporaneous Speaking is for senior 4-H'ers in grades Participants are given a 4-H related topic and they have 20 minutes to prepare a four to six minute speech. Materials are available for members to use as they prepare for their speech. This is a great way to learn how to think on your feet. Anyone can do this! 4-H Working Exhibits In a Working Exhibit, YOU are the teacher. The audience is walking by and it is your job to get them to stop and learn. People at your display will want to be involved in a hands-on activity, which means they do the work and you talk them through it. The topics are endless! Think about a skill that you have that others would be interested in learning about! This is a learning opportunity, what educational information can you teach through a hands-on activity. It is just that easy. 6 Clothing Day The 2014 Clothing Day is scheduled for Saturday, June 14th at the Marion County Extension Office. This will not be an all day event with workshops, it will just be judging. You will come at your judging time and leave when you are finished. To get signed up for the Clothing Day fill out the Marion County Clothing Event Report Form and return it to the Marion County Extension Office by Wednesday, May 30th. Fill out one form per entry/garment/outfit. There is one Clothing Event Report Form included in this newsletter, if extra forms are needed they are available at the Extension Office or on the website at: Clothing Selection: Purchase a garment or outfit from any source (new or resale) Select and/or purchase an outfit that represents the 4-H ers goal or intended use for the selected outfit. Have an individual or county experience in choosing shopping alternatives, evaluating fit, quality and construction features, price, and cost comparison. Note: Outfits may be selected and/or purchased from any source, including consignment shops, used clothing stores, department stores, etc. Clothing items which are home-sewn are not eligible unless the completed garment was purchased from a used clothing source. Clothing items which are custom sewn specifically for the participant are not eligible. Fashion Review: Make a garment or outfit (may be sewn, knitted or crocheted) Construct an outfit that represents the 4-H ers goal or intended use for the selected outfit. The garment or outfit may be hand-knitted, machine-knitted or crocheted during the current 4-H year. A garment or outfit consisting of one to three pieces such as party clothes, tailored suits, vest, slacks, shirt, skirt, active sportswear and/or coats are acceptable as Fashion Revue entries. Blouses shirts, and sweaters are usually considered as garments. If they are used to complete an outfit, they may be constructed or selected. All other accessories and undergarments may be constructed or selected. $15 Challenge: Choose a garment or outfit from a resale shop, consignment store, or garage sale that costs $15 or less (not including shoes, accessories, undergarments). Purchase an outfit that represents the 4-H ers goal or intended use for the selected outfit. Have an individual planned or county experience(s) in choosing shopping alternatives, evaluating fit, quality and construction features, price and cost comparison. Outfits may be selected and/or purchased from a garage sale, consignment store, or resale shop (Goodwill, Salvation Army). Cost of outfit must be $15 or less, not including shoes, accessories or undergarments. Receipt(s) MUST be turned in with the Clothing Event Report Form.

7 4-H Marion County Clothing Event Report Form Due May 30, This form is available on our website to fill out electronically. (Members selected for the State Fair will receive additional forms to fill out.) This form should be filled out to enter Fashion Revue (Constructed garments), $15 Challenge, or Clothing Selection (Purchased garments). You will need to submit three forms if you enter in all categories. Please include a photo of yourself in your outfit/garment for each category entered. This form may be downloaded off our website and you may type into the outlined information boxes. DO NOT use the TAB KEY. Using your MOUSE, position the cursor within the boxes to start typing. 8 3. Why do you think this outfit is right for the activity or occasion written above (question 2)? (fabric, fit, construction) 4. What other items in your wardrobe can you wear with this outfit? 5. How many times in a year do you expect to wear this outfit? 6. What kind of care does this outfit require? 7. What was the cost of this outfit and is the cost and care required for this outfit reasonable? 8. Describe the accessories you selected and explain why. 9. Write a short paragraph that says what you want to hear about yourself and this outfit as you model on stage. (You can include your name, statements about design features and colors in the outfit, your goals, or your recent 4-H experiences.) 10. 9 Dog Project Meetings Lessons will be held on Mondays, beginning May 5th thru July (last class to be determined) at the Marion County Fairgrounds from 7-8pm (back behind the livestock barns, in the camping area). Equipment needed for Obedience/Agility: choke chain (2 larger than circumference of dog s neck; 6-8 foot nylon or leather leash (no livestock leads/ropes), quick-release collar (has snap buckle). Classes will not be held Monday, May 26 (Memorial Day). Attendance at 6 lessons is required in order to show at County Fair. 4- Her s please, do not wear flip flops unless you like getting dog do on your toes. As an advance calendar item, please note the Dog Obedience and Dog Agility Shows will be held on Friday, July 11th beginning at 1:00p.m. Obedience will be first with the Agility show to follow.. If you have questions, please contact Deb VanWaardhuizen, after 5pm. Horse Project Meetings Horse Project meetings will be held at 7pm on May 6 and May 20 at the fairground. Meetings will be moved to Turner s Arena in case of rain. Horses are not required for the meeting on the 6th. 4- Hers may bring their horses on the 20th, but are not required to. Marion County Horse Project's 4-H/FFA/Open Horse Show The Marion County Horse Project's 4-H/FFA/Open Horse show is scheduled for Sunday, June 22, 2014 at the Marion County Fairgrounds in Knoxville. For questions or more information contact Lora Mattson State Fair Livestock All non-market livestock HAVE to be IDed through 4Honline by May 15th. It is the responsibility of the 4-H member to be sure that the information that you are entering in accurate and on time. You should have received an explaining how to ID your livestock. The instructions are also available at the Marion County 4-H webpage. If you have questions or need assistance, please contact Mindy (641) or kephartm@iastate.edu If you IDed animals at the sheep and goat weigh-in for State Fair, it is your responsibility to log in to 4Honline and verify that the information is correct. You can log-in and verify that information on May8th. Please verify the information by May 15th. You received instructions on how to do this in your weigh-in information packet, or instructions will be available at weigh-in.

10 Red Rock Classic Cattle Show This open cattle show will be a joint event between Marion County and Jasper County Cattlemen and is sanctioned by the Iowa Junior Beef Breeds Association. The show will be held at the Marion County Fairgrounds in Knoxville, on Sunday, May 18. Check-in will be held from 8:00 to 10:00 am, with showmanship starting at 11:00, and the show at noon. Prizes and judge are to yet be determined. Registration forms are available at the Marion County Extension Office. Exhibitors can either mail the completed registration form to th Ave Knoxville, IA 50138, or send it via to justinehstevenson@gmail.com. Please note that the pre-registration fee is $25/hd and day-of registration is $35/hd. Poultry Pullorum Testing Please be aware that all poultry will need to be Pullorum tested between within 90 days of the fair to comply with health rules. The Marion County Extension Office will be offering Pollorum tesing from 6:30-8:00p.m. on June 19th and July 1st. There will be no charge to have your birds tested on those dates. Swine Exhibitors This is a reminder that all swine must be ear notched before the fair. Please do not bring pigs to the fair with fresh ear notches! If you need help with ear notching please contact the Marion County Extension Office or a Swine Superintendent. Also if you plan to exhibit Swine at the Marion County Fair you must complete the FSQA training or testing. FSQA If you missed the Marion County FSQA training/testing night and you are planning to show livestock at the State Fair and/or swine at the Marion County Fair then you must complete the training in another county or take the test at the Marion County Extension Office. If you plan to test please call the Extension Office before you come. If you plan to take the training in another county please call that county before you go. 4-6 grade students must take the FSQA training. 7-9 grade students can take the Intermediate Test grade students can take the Senior Test Please contact the Extension Office and we can help you locate a testing site.
