This is the third year for the Marion County 4-H Bucket of Junk Contest. We had 7 five gallon buckets of Junk donated by Vermeer in Pella and Weiler in Knoxville. Each bucket was filled with a variety of scrap metal from the two businesses. The first 7 4-Hers into the Extension Office were able to choose a number that went along with which bucket they received. After receiving the bucket of junk the 4-Her and an adult worked together to create a sculpture or lawn art piece. The rules of the contest were as follows: Teams must use approximately 75% of the materials in the bucket. Teams may clean, sand, weld, glue, cut, bolt, fasten, bend, shape, paint, or finish the items that you are provided. Teams WERE NOT allowed to add any extra pieces that weren t in the bucket. The finished pieces will be judged at Dyer-Hudson on artistic merit, technical merit, and the write up on the creation on July 10 th. After being judged they will be on display in the Dyer Hudson Building until July 15 th. Be sure to come to the Marion County Fair and support the 4-H program and the bucket of junk creations. If you want to have one the 8 pieces of art in your house, front yard, or business, be sure to come to the Marion County Fair Show Pavilion on July 17 th at 6pm to bid on the sculptures! They will be auctioned off during the 4-H Foundation Recognition Events, which includes senior 4-H/FFA members, Parade of Champions, and the 4-H Bucket of Junk Auction.

6 6 Quick Checklist for Dyer-Hudson 1. Read Fairbook 2. Make a list of the Exhibits you will be taking to Dyer-Hudson Judging Day 3. Read Copyright rules listed in the fairbook, pg. 4H-6, #18. Double check your exhibits for Copyright issues. 4. Fill out Dyer-Hudson 4-H Exhibit Entry Form 5. Fill out 4-H Exhibit Record Form or Write/Type out 4 goal questions on paper (4 questions can be found on pg. 4H-4 & 4H-23) This is required for County Fair. Exhibits will not be accepted without a record. 6. Identify appropriate requirements of Elements and Principles of Design for Visual Arts, Home Improvement, and Clothing Exhibits. (check out 4H-18) 7. Fill out Entry Tags (1 must be attached to each exhibit) 8. All paperwork (exhibit tag and exhibit record) needs to be completed when you come to the fair, DO NOT bring your projects in without completed forms and tags! 9. Wear 4-H T-shirt. If you do not have one they are available for purchase at the Extension Office for $7 10. Check-in will be from 9:00a.m to 3:30p.m.; this will allow the judges to complete their judging and begin the process of choosing exhibits for State Fair. 11. There will be a State Fair Exhibitor meeting at 7pm on Wednesday, July 15th in Dyer Hudson. 12. If you have questions, or need help filling out paperwork prior to the day of judging, please contact Mindy, Chrys, or Rachel ** Dyer-Hudson exhibits will be displayed in the Dyer-Hudson building during the fair. Once they have been judged they will be placed in your club booth. On Wednesday, July 15 th from 7:30-8:30p.m. they must be checked out. At the time of check out you will receive your premium money for the ribbons you earned. If you do not pick up your exhibits between 7:30-8:30p.m. you will forfeit your premium money.** Dear Volunteers and Parents: The County Fair is quickly approaching! It is such an exciting time to be able to see all the hard work that our young people have invested in their project areas and exhibits. As we go through the pre-fair time and the fair time, please keep in mind that this is only a small (but very memorable) piece of the whole 4- H experience. The competition of the county fair can be a positive experience if we keep it in perspective and help youth learn from their experiences. Here are some helpful tips from the Iowa 4-H Youth Development Program (4H-203-A) for helping youth keep perspective during this time. Allow youth to select the project area in which they will compete. This helps give them a sense of control. Encourage youth to participate in a variety of competitive events (livestock judging, showmanship) and cooperative activities (helping in the 4-H food stand, helping decorate the club booth). Be positive. Make expectations realistic. Peer competition allows the opportunity for adults to teach youth about limits and strengths; setting goals; and the personal and social benefits of projects done alone or with friends. Be a positive role model Always place the youth first and winning second. Most importantly, support youth in their competitive efforts, but don t compete with them or through them for your own satisfaction. When youth achieve, their pride should come from accomplishing their goals, not yours. From your own experiences with competition, you understand that a single outcome from a single event does not determine how successful or unsuccessful you will be throughout life. Your mature attitude toward competition will help youth learn how to deal with the pressure that comes with the competition experience. If you are with the youth following a judging experience, help them process the experience by asking, What did you learn? What did you enjoy about the experience? As 4-H volunteers and parents, you play a significant role in shaping how your young person views competition and what they learn from the 4-H experience at the county fair and throughout the year. We applaud what you do for these young people and encourage you to help them always think about how to make the best better!

After judging on the 9th, the buckets will be placed around the fair for beautification. Also remember the 2015 Fair theme: Barn in the USA for decorating ideas! The buckets will be auctioned off in a silent auction that will be held throughout the week. Livestock Judging Contest Come test your skills at judging livestock at the Marion County Fair! The contest will be held Monday July 14th at 4pm in the Show Pavilion.
