1 Welcome to Summer and Pre-Fair Flurry! June H Highlights Things are extremely busy around the Extension Office with preparations for the 2012 Cherokee County Fair. Be sure to read your newsletter completely as there are many news items pertaining to fair and upcoming workshops. If you are a returning 4-H er and have participated in the county fair before, welcome back. If this is your first county fair as a 4-H er welcome! It may seem like a stressful time, but relax and don t sweat the small stuff. We will get thru it and we will all learn from it. While at the fair, remember to take some time to enjoy the fair. Have some fun! Spend some time reconnecting with old friends, meet new friends, try something new, and make some great summer memories! Don t forget to bake your best Ugly Cake, prepare your best wrap for Pride of Iowa and take in the alligator show. Have a great June and we will see you at the fair! It s a Retirement Party! 2 What will the Judge ask? The questions the judge will ask, depends on your exhibit goals and type of project. You will find it helpful to write a clear, short, one-sentence goal statement before you begin to create your exhibit. After knowing your goals, the judge will ask you about the learning involved, that is, how information was gathered, materials used, problems that were solved, and what new skills you learned. The judge will also look at the general appearance of the exhibit as far as neatness and attractiveness. In addition, the judge will want to know your future plans and what you have learned. DESIGN ELEMENTS & PRINCIPLES Notice: All 4-H ers who enter projects in the following categories are to include 2 Design Elements and 2 Art Principles written on the Goal Sheet or included in their write up for the judge at the fair. Those categories are: Home Improvement, Clothing, Sewing & Needlework, and Visual Arts. If you have any questions, please be sure to ask your leader, call or stop by the Extension Office, or check out the website and hot sheets. SETTING GOALS It is very important to set goals for your project areas, as well as the exhibits you are working on. There are three main parts to each goal: 1. Action: What you want to do in your project area or with your exhibit? Learn how to work with modeling clay. Create a sculpture out of modeling clay. 2. Result: What are you going to do to achieve your goals? Read publications from our club library, attend workshops, and practice with modeling clay. 3. Time Table: When are you going to work towards and complete your goals? During the year at the fair. IMPORTANT DEADLINES!!! Cherokee County Fair entries are due into the Cherokee County Extension Office by 4:30 PM, on June 15th. ABSOLUTELY NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE AC- CEPTED! Iowa State Fair Livestock entries are due into the Cherokee County Extension Office by 4:30 PM, on June 30th. ABSO- LUTELY NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED! Clay County Fair entries are due into the Cherokee County Extension Office no later than 4:30 PM on July 27th. AB- SOLUTELY NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE AC- CEPTED! Ak-Sar-Ben entries are due into the Cherokee County Extension Office no later than 4:30 PM on July 27th. ABSO- LUTELY NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED! 4-H Static Fair Classes Go ONLINE with Exhibit TIP SHEETS Don t forget about the 4-H Exhibit TIP SHEETS that are now available for 4-H ers preparing them for Static Exhibits judging during our 2012 County Fair and Iowa State Fair. Each 4-H Project web page provides a link to information about What s the judge looking for? 4-H ers first tell judges about their exhibit goals, steps and what they learn. The new TIP SHEETS then gives the 4-H ers help on additional questions that might be asked, technical factors that judges look for and even how to prepare or display their exhibit. The new web based 4-H Exhibit TIP SHEETS are found on the right-hand side of each 4-H Project page in the Taking It Further section right below the Iowa 4-H Project Hotsheet. Post Fair Clean-up on July 16th beginning at 6PM make plans to join us!

3 2012 Cherokee County Fair Dates July Other important dates are: Pre-Fair Clean-up: June 27th & 28th Clothing Review Judging: June 25th Entry Day: July 10th Communications Day: July 12th Post-Fair Clean-up: July 16th Bake Your Best UGLY Cake! Returning to the 2012 Cherokee County Fair is the Best Ugly Cake contest. Ugliness is in the mind of the beholder (or in this case, the judge). The Ugly Cake Contest will accept entries that are ugly or gross. All cakes must be ugly. No pretty or average looking cakes. Cakes will be judged on their ugly appearance and must taste good. All cakes will remain on display the entire fair. This year cakes will be judged in front of an audience. The judging will take place on Saturday, July 14th at 7:30PM. Cakes should be at the North 4-H Building by 7:00PM that evening. 4-H membership is not a requirement for this department. Adults are encourage to participate. There will be 4 age groups: 5-8 year olds, 9-13 year olds, year olds, and 19 and older. Cakes can be homemade or from a package mix. The ENTIRE cake and decorations must be edible. Cakes with non-edible decorations or foreign objects will be disqualified! Cakes must arrive at the contest on disposable containers such as a cardboard or cake round. Only whole cakes will be accepted. Rabbit Tattoo Workshop A rabbit tattoo workshop will be held on Wednesday, June 27th from 7-8:30 PM at the Cherokee Extension Office. For rabbits that need to be tattooed, assign a tattoo number and use that number on your fair entry forms. We will provide copies of your entry forms to Don Pingel so that the rabbits are tattooed correctly at the workshop. For more information, contact the Extension Office at Cakes must be given a title. So challenge your brother or sister, challenge your mom or dad, challenge grandma or grandpa. Better yet, challenge your club leader and let s see who can make the UGLIEST Cake in Cherokee County!!!! POSTER COMMUNICATION THEMES The 2012 themes for the Poster Communication Department are... 4-H is... (open to 4-H ers interpretation) Join 4-H Brighten Your World (2012 IA 4-H Youth Conference theme) Nothing Compares (2012 IA State Fair theme) 4-H ers are allowed 1 entry in this class.

4 It s War! We will again be conducting the Penny War fundraising event during the Cherokee County Fair. It will include all clubs. Beginning on Tuesday, July 10th, Static Entry day of the Cherokee County Fair, we will have out the Penny War box in the South 4-H Building. People will be putting their donations into their favorite club s container. On Sunday, July 15th, after the crowning of the Fair Queen, the Penny War Box will be removed. How do we decide who wins? We count the money. Pennies are worth one point apiece. All silver or green backs, take away points. So if you have a nickel in your box, we deduct 5 points. The club with the most points will receive 10% of the total money collected. The rest of the money will be put into a special Financial Aid fund to help with Cherokee County 4-H ers who want to go to State Conference, Summer Camp, Washington D.C., etc. Remember this is a friendly competition! So start collecting! Host an Exchange Student Looking for new experiences and cultural immersion for you and your family? Want to open your home to an exchange student or know someone who would? Iowa Resource for International Service (IRIS) is looking for host families for their exchange program. Students are Englishspeaking high school juniors from several countries, including Egypt, Thailand, Yemen, and Tanzania. IRIS works through the Youth Exchange and Study (YES) program funded by the State Department. PARKING AT THE COUNTY FAIR 4-H Livestock Exhibitors are reminded that they should park in the DESIGNATED AREAS ONLY. The designated area is located to the EAST of the Commercial building in the small hay field. You may drive up to the barns to drop off your supplies and then you will need to go and park in the East parking lot or in the large west parking lot. Do not park anywhere else on the grounds. If horse exhibitors are working from their trailer on Thurs. afternoon during the show, you can park up by the arena. Remember to keep the fire lane open and do not park by the building. If you want to drop off your trailer, there will be room out in the west parking to dolly down. SPECIAL CALF CLASS This year we will be adding a Special Calf Class to the Beef Show. The ribbon placement will be based solely on what the exhibitor has learned with the project. It requires a special form and paperwork. The following are the rules for the class: 1. Be a first year exhibitor. 2. Calf must be 2-5 months of age. 3. Bring to the show, the entry form filled out 4. Talk with the judge. The calf will come and go the day of the show. The calf must be on a halter. These exhibitors will meet with the judge beginning at 8:30AM on Saturday before the beef show. Since we have just added this class, we are not requiring these animals to be on the May 15th ID s. You will still need to enter them by the June 15th deadline. The forms are at the Extension Office. These animals can be feed throughout the summer and come to the market beef weigh in that is held in the winter and the exhibitor will have a good start to a fair project for For more information contact the Cherokee Extension Office.

5 All livestock exhibitors will have a packet that includes their exhibitor number, vehicle pass, etc. Please remember to pick them up at the 4-H fair office prior to the livestock shows you are participating in. 4-H ers need to use the same exhibitor number for each show they participate in. Is your family going on vacation and won t be around for the fair? Not to worry, you can still do static projects. Just make arrangements with Brenda to drop off your projects before you go and we will have them pencil judged on judging day. You are still eligible to go to the State Fair and to receive premium money. HELPFUL FAIR HINTS To aid in displaying your Art and Photo projects at the fair, please attach a hanger to your mounting material. Copyright rules and guidelines must be followed when creating a fair exhibit. Exhibits will be disqualified if they do not follow copyright guidelines. If you are planning to include a cassette, DVD, or video as part of your fair exhibit, please bring the equipment you need. Many fair classes ask for 4-H ers to include information on the design elements and principles of design used. If you need more information, please contact the Extension Office. If you need assistance in answering the questions or addressing the design elements on your exhibit evaluation form, a sample form is posted on our web site. A Judging Day Help Sheet is also posted to help explain the judging day process at the Fair. Premium money for fair ribbons will be available at the fair. You will be able to receive your premium money at the 4-H fair office at announced times only. The times to pick up premiums will be posted during the fair. Be sure to check the schedule by the 4-H Fair Office window. 4-H Foundation premiums will be mailed at a later date. 4-H swine checks will be mailed to exhibitors as soon as possible following the receipt of money from the packer. All livestock on the fairgrounds, except poultry and pets, must turn in a signed health certificate by July 2nd Sheep exhibitors will need to obtain health certificates after June 27 and turn them in no later than July 2nd. The state veterinarian limits all sheep health certificates to 14 days prior to entry day because of club lamb fungus. All horses on the fairgrounds must have a current health certificate on file with the Extension Office. Dress a Bunny For all you rabbit exhibitors, we will once again be offering the Dress a Bunny class. It will be the last class of the rabbit show. So find a costume for your best bunny and let s have some fun!

6 Building Host Schedule We will only be watching the South 4-H Building this year. You are being asked to work in the Clover Patch. This is an information booth and we will have some 4-H merchandise on sale. Please wear work clothes, you might get dirty, you might paint, who knows! :) Remember to bring: work gloves, rakes, shovels, hammers, pliers, wire cutters, good attitudes and lots of ENERGY!
