We have been busy working on the fair schedule and new things for the 2014 Cherokee County Fair. You can find information about some of those things in this newsletter. Please be sure to read your newsletter as there is a lot of information on upcoming events in it. Hope you can get out and enjoy some nice weather this month! REMINDER OF ATTENDANCE POLICY Brenda As we approach fair season, I must remind everyone that there is a meeting attendance policy for Cherokee County 4-H. It states that you must attend 1/2 of your club s business meetings throughout the year to be in good standing and be eligible for any 4-H fair. With that being stated, if you are a member of 2 or more clubs, you must meet the requirement for EACH club, not a combination. County Council meetings do not count as club meetings. If you are in question of meeting the requirements, please check with your club leader. 4-H is MUCH MORE than the county fair. 2 Creative Spirits Workshop April 21st The newest trendiest entertainment to hit the area is coming to Cherokee! Get ready to amaze yourself, as the artist from Creative Spirits of Okoboji guide you through the step by step process of recreating one of their original works of art. By the end of the session you will have had a fabulous time and will be able to take home a work of art painted by YOU! Kid s workshop from 2-4PM and is $25 Adult workshop from 6:00-8PM and is $35 Workshop will be held at the Cherokee Community Center, so there is plenty of room for all your friends! You can register by following the link on our webpage or by stopping by the Cherokee County Extension Office. Clothing Selection & Revue Are you out shopping for an outfit for a special occasion? Maybe you just like to shop the sales racks. These are all ways that you can participate in the Clothing Selection and Revue at the Cherokee County Fair. This 4-H project is designed to help you explore the world of clothing. Fashions fade learn to make your style your own and timeless in the clothing project. Discover what looks best on your body, how to make it, where to buy it, and how to care for it. Express yourself through creating and planning an exciting wardrobe Develop skills to purchase and make clothing Learn how to use equipment to make and care for your clothes Make clothes for yourself and others There are 3 ways to participate: Constructed Garment/Outfit Selected Garment/Outfit $15 Challenge Constructed Garments: 4-H ers may model a garment or outfit they have constructed, hand-knitted, machine-knitted, or crocheted themselves during the current 4-H year. Selected Garments: 4-H ers model a selected or purchased outfit that represents the 4-H ers goal or intended use for the selected outfit. The outfit may be selected or purchased from any source, including clothing stores, department stores, consignment shops, or used clothing stores. $15 Challenge: The cost of the outfit must be $15 or less, not including shoes, accessories or undergarments. Receipts must be turned in with the 4-H Clothing Event Report Form. 4-h ers may model an outfit they have selected and/or purchased within the current 4-H year from a garage sale, consignment sale, or resale shop (i.e. Goodwill, Salvation Army, or other stores of this type) that represents the 4-H ers goal or intended use for the selected outfit. Be sure to consult your fair book or if you have any questions, please feel free to call the Extension Office. Entry Forms for the Clothing Selection & Revue are due June 27th and judging will take place on Thurs. 3 STATE 4-H NEWS ISF Clothing/Cook This Changes The State 4-H Office has announced a couple of changes for the Iowa State Fair 4-H Events. 1. You may be selected to participate in the Clothing Event more than one year. 2. The Cook This! Event will now have a preliminary event held on June 18th on the ISU Campus. The final competition will be at the Iowa State Fair on August 7th. LOCAL 4-H NEWS Swine Health Information PEDV Please be sure to check out the resources and information on the PED virus for swine. This can be found on the 4-H Swine page, under the Swine Show Health Info section. STATE 4-H NEWS Up coming FSQA Training dates Announced! Saturday, May 10th 10 AM to 11:30AM Cherokee Extension Office ALL youth exhibiting swine, beef, sheep, dairy, rabbit, poultry, and meat goat at the Cherokee County Fair, Clay County Fair, Iowa State Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben MUST be certified in the 4-H FSQA program. When 4-H members meet the 4-H FSQA certification they have also met the Beef Quality Assurance and the Pork Quality Assurance certification as well. Listed below are your options: * If you are in grades 4, 5, or 6 - you MUST attend a workshop. * If you are in grades 7, 8, or 9 - You may either attend a workshop (good for one year) OR make arrangements with Brenda to take a test (good until you are in 10th grade). * If you are in grades 10, 11, 12 - You may either attend a workshop (good for one year) OR make arrangements with Brenda to take a test (good until you are 19 at which time you will need to take adult certification) You can call Brenda at the Extension Office (712) to set up a time to take the test. If this date doesn t work for you, there will be a Last Chance training on Thursday, June 12th from 7 to 8:30 PM. Training/testing needs to be completed before June15th! 4 Statewide 4-H Specialty Camps at 4-H Center There are four special-themed 4-H camps designed for 5th-8th graders this year. These statewide camps will be held at the Iowa 4-H Center near Madrid. While learning about the special theme of the camp, campers will live in a camp community for five days and four nights, enjoying traditional camp favorites like swimming, canoeing, hiking, climbing, and campfires. Registration is open until all beds are full, of course. The dates and themes of the four camps are June State 4-H Leadership Camp; June 28-July 2 4-H Veterinary and Animal Science Camp; July H STEM Catalysts Camp; and August H Healthy, Green, and Growing Camp. Cost for these camps is $240. Registration is available on the 4-H Camping website Contact Bill Beckley for more information (wbeckley@iastate.edu) Senior 4-H Member Retreat in NW Iowa All 4-H members in 8th-12th grade throughout Northwest Iowa are invited to attend a Senior 4-H Member retreat at the Prairie Heritage Center in O Brien County (4131 Yellow Ave. Peterson, IA ). This will be held on June 3rd from 4-8PM. The day will be filled with awesome outdoor adventures! This will be a great way for you to meet and have fun with other 4-H members your age from Northwest Iowa. Watch for more details as the date gets closer! Iowa 4-H Youth Conference June 24-26, 2014 Every June, close to 1000 teenagers converge on the campus of Iowa State University for 3 days full of speakers, workshops, mixers, dances, a banquet, and community service activities. If you ve completed 8th grade, you re eligible to attend. You don t even have to be in 4-H to attend this conference! You will get to experience campus life, and meet new people from across the state! You will be having fun while learning by doing, dancing the nights away, and serving the community. You will get to learn new things to take back to your community and school, and in the process you might even discover something new about yourself! There are even opportunities for you to share your talents with the rest of the delegation through small group discussion, the Conference Chorus, and a Talent Show! If you have a specific interest in animal science, you might want to look into becoming part of the ROUND-UP track! We ll also have a special track devoted to agronomy, called CSI: Crops. Cost is $175 and includes a tshirt, 2 nights lodging, 7 meals, 3 keynote speakers, 2 dances and more! Scholarship aid is available. Make plans to join us in June! 5 My 4-H, My Commitment The annual 4-H ers for 4-H campaign begins March 1. The campaign is conducted by members of the State 4-H Council and their theme this year is My 4-H, My Commitment. The goal is to raise $30,000 by asking every 4-H club to consider a donation of $2.50 per member. Some of the projects to be funded include new mattresses for Oak cabins at the Iowa 4-H Center, improvements to the 4-H exhibit displays for the Iowa State Fair; and financial assistance to help youth attend 4-H camp or state conference. The State 4-H Council would appreciate everyone s commitment to help make the best better for all Iowa 4-H ers. Project Tip Sheets and Hot Sheets Don t wait until July! This is the perfect time of year to be making goals and working on projects you plan to show at the Cherokee County Fair in July. Visit for project ideas, tips and find out what the judge will be looking for. SHEEP/MEAT GOAT WEIGH IN The Cherokee County 4-H Sheep/Meat Goat Weigh in will be held on Saturday, May 3rd from 10:00AM to 11:30AM at the Cherokee County Fair Grounds. All market lambs and commercial ewes to be shown at the 2014 Cherokee County Fair must be weighed in that day. The sheep and meat goats showing at the Iowa State Fair and Ak-Sar-Ben will need to have their Retinal Image taken or DNA pulled. For more information, please contact the Cherokee County Extension Office at or Kyle Schmillen at Animal ID s Don t wait until May 15th to get your animal ID s turned in! All ID s will be done thru the 4HOnline system again this year. If you do not have access to a computer, paper ID s will be accepted at the Cherokee Extension Office until May 10th! The 4HOnline system will be locked down at 11:59PM on May 15th and no late ID s will be accepted! The Extension Office staff will be out of the office for professional development on May 14th, so please plan accordingly. 6 What s New at the Cherokee County Fair We have been busy working on the 2014 Cherokee County Fair schedule. You will find it in this edition of the Clover Connection. Please read it carefully as a few things have changed. AG QUIZ BOWL This year, with the help of the Iowa Corn Association, we will have an AG QUIZ BOWL. We are in search of 3 teams that consist of 4 students and 1 adult who are wanting to participate. This will take place on Saturday, July 19th beginning at 2PM in the North 4-H Building. ROBOTICS TRACTOR PULL We are adding a Tractor Pull for those interested in Robotics. We will have our NXT Mindstormers at the fair and participants will be able to problem solve design issues and learn programming to see who can pull the weight sled the farthest. This will take place on Thursday, July 17th in the North 4-H Building. OVERALL SHOWMAN This year we will be having an Overall Showman Contest. This contest will take the Champion and Reserve Senior Showman of the larger species. This competition will take place on Sunday, July 20th beginning at 11:30a.m. Watch for more details in future newsletters. BESSIE BINGO County Council is working on holding Bessie Bingo otherwise known as Cow Chip Bingo. This will take place on Friday, July 18th. Proceeds will be donated to the Cherokee 4-H Foundation. GLO WALK/RUN On Wednesday evening the 16th, the Cherokee Trails Committee will be holding a Glo Run, yes you can walk. This will leave the fairgrounds and take you on the new trails system thru the Rock Island edition, down thru Westcott Park, and around Spring Lake Park. It does take place after dark and you will get those cool glow in the dark items. BEAUTIFUL BUCKET THEMES FOR 2014 In this contest, participants decorate a three to five gallon bucket (available at discount stores or reuse the bucket from last year) to coordinate with one of the following themes: * All entries will arrive during static judging on Tuesday. * Participants should use live plant material of their choice. * Bucket O Sauce use your imagination and plant your bucket with all the things you might need to make spaghetti sauce.
