2 Clover Kids Fair Updates Indoor Exhibits: You may bring up to four exhibits and one pet on July 16th. You will fill out a goal card and then meet with an adult and tell about your project. Your exhibits will stay at the fair in your club booth. The goal cards may be found on our website or at the Extension office Bottle Calf Any Clover Kid who has completed Grades 1-3 may exhibit a Bottle Calf. The calves must be born between December 15th, 2010 and May 15th, You will be interviewed about how you work with your calf and if you can lead it. Be prepared to answer questions about how you have cared for it, fed it, and what you have fed it. Bottle Lamb/Goat clover Kids who have completed grades K-3 may enter this class. Any orphan /newborn lamb/kid born between Jan. 1 and May 1, 2011 may exhibit. Be prepared to answer the same questons. More information can be found at the Poweshiek website and in your fairbook. COUNTY Legislative Day 1.75 x 2.25 PHOTO IDEA: If you don t have a photo, insert a fun graphic that relates to it and is eye-catching. Images help people decide if they are going to read something or not. On March 10th six Poweshiek County 4Hers headed to the Iowa State Capital. We met up with 10 other youth from Mahaska and Marion County We were given a tour of the Iowa Supreme Court and able to ask questions about judges and elections. Next we toured the Iowa State Capital. We had an opportunity to meet with Kim Pearson and question her on issues before the legislators this session as well as how the whole process works. We were able to climb steps to the Crow s nest in the capital building. After lunch we visited the Iowa Hall of Pride, tried our hands at karaoke, shooting hoops and tossing footballs as well as learn some cool things about Iowa sports. Event Day June 18th New EVENTS!! Saturday, June 18th plan on taking part in Event Day.! This is the day you can compete in the County Communications Competition, County Clothing Competition, Food Challenge and new this year Table Setting. Communication Competition will involve Presentations, Working Exhibits and Share the Fun. Clothing Event includes Fashion Revue, Clothing Selection and $15 Challenge. Food Challenge allows you to prepare those recipes you may not be able to take to the County Fair. New this year is the Table Setting Contest. You will design a table setting with one place setting. Included in your setting will be table covering, dinnerware, silverware, stemware, centerpiece and menu (no food). Be creative -anything from picnics to formal settings, casual and creative look on our website for ideas and rules. 3 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Little Hands on the Farm The Little Hands on the Farm at the Iowa State Fair is looking for volunteers for the 2011 Fair. Little Hands on the Farm helps kids connect to agriculture by teaching them in an entertaining and interactive way. If you club has an interest in volunteering, please call Emily Brewer, ISF Ag Ed Coordinator x2444. Fairgrounds Concessions On April 16th the Fairboard will be running a concession stand at the fairgrounds They are in need of volunteers for the day. You may sign up for a 2 hour shift by calling Marcia at the fair office Great opportunity for community service. AT THE FAIRGROUNDS Charro Jerry Diaz - April 20th Poweshiek County Fairgrounds will be hosting Charro Jerry Diaz, Nationally known horseman and entertainer the evening of April 5:30 Jerry is recognized around the world for his horsemanship and dedication to the Charro traditions ( A Charro is a skilled Mexican horseman whose origins date back to the 17th century) The show is sponsored by H&W Brand Gates and Key Coop. Jerry will talk on nutrition and care of your horse while entertaining. Admission of $5 for adults and $2.50 for youth. Fundraising Opportunities The Fairboard is looking for clubs to man concession stands for various events. They will reimburse the club $100 for each event. The food preparation is minimal. You will need to have 3-4 people per shift (usually 3 2 hour shifts). Contact Marcia at the fair office if your club is interested. OUT OF COUNTY OPPORTUNITIES State Conference June 28th 30th Be one of 1,000 youth from all over Iowa who will be heading to Ames June 28th 30th and Aim for Adventure. You don t even have to be a 4Her to attend. 3 days of speakers, workshops, mixers, dances and community service. You can sign up for the traditional conference or choose to be part of ROUND-UP or CSI: CropTracks! If you decide to be part of ROUND-UP, you can choose between beef, sheep, swine, horse, dairy or dairy goat. Participants in CSI Crops will investigate actual crop scenes and using the latest electronic tools and DNA lab analysis to solve the problem Any youth who has completed 8th through 12th grade may attend. 4 Shooting Aces invite you to Open House April 17th the Shooting Aces would like to invite you to come to the range and have some fun! They will be setting up an archery shoot, Rifle challenges, and muzzle loader challenges. STATE 4-H CAMP Spring Volunteer Day Lots of projects for all skill levels. Come for the morning, the afternoon, or stay the whole day. Continental breakfast in Linden Lodge, 9:00 a.m. when daily projects are announced. Lunch provided at noon. Overnight lodging available for 4-H Clubs at $7 per person in Birch or Hickory Villages Friday or Saturday night. Call the camp office at (515) to sign up. you might also check out the website for camp opportunities this summer Our Extension Council offers scholarships. Bows, rifles and muzzleloaders, as well as the ammunition is all provided. Refreshments will also be served. Come as a club or come on your own. Walls and Waffles Come test out your climbing skills on the 50' wall, fly down the 380' long mega zip line, and enjoy a tasty brunch of waffles and more at the first annual Wall & Waffles Fundraising event on Saturday May 7th at the state 4-H Camp. Brunch will start at 9 a.m. in Linden and go till noon. The climbing tower and zip line will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event is open to all and we will be collecting donations at the door as we work towards a goal of raising $2,000 to purchase a new element for the climbing tower this summer. SENIOR MEMBERS Reach Out Iowa Adv. Board Here is an exciting new state leadership opportunity for high school aged 4-Hers, the Reach Out Iowa Advisory Board. Do you have a passion for serving your community or addressing community problems and issues? The Reach Out Iowa Advisory Board is a great opportunity to further develop your citizenship, communication and leadership skills.. Here is an opportunity for select youth entering their sophomore or Junior year this fall travel to China for 11 days to learn about our global economy and see some incredible sites. 5 State Fair Special Events Eight Days of Special Challenges are being planned for the 2011 State Fair Filmmaking, robotics, cooking and fashion design challenges await you. Youth in grades 5-12 are eligible to participate in fimmaking, while robotics is open to teams in grades 5-8. Junior, Intermediate and Senior teams may sign up for Cook This! And teams of teens are encouraged to sign up for STITCH this! More information can be found at article/4-h-announces-state-fairspecial-events ANIMAL Dog Agility Agility Classes will begin on April 13th at 6:00 fairgrounds. Trish Hafkey will be instructing. Please come the first night without your dog. You will need to bring proof of rabies vaccination. You and your dog also need to have at least one year of obedience. The cost of the Agility Class will be $30. We will go over expectations, rules and answer questions. Trish will be offering Obedience classes beginning in May. If you have friends who would like to participate, please bring invite them. We are looking forward to rolling this program out should be lots of fun! FSQA New Guidelines Testing based on Grade Junior members in grades 4-6 will attend every year. Members in grades 7-9 may choose to attend each year or they may test, which will certify them until they reach the 10 th grade. Youth in grades will have the option of attending a training every year, or completing a test which will certify them until they turn 20. You will need to achieve 70% on the test and may test up to 3 times in one day. You need to attend FSQA if you are showing swine at the Poweshiek County Fair or Beef, Swine, Sheep, Meat Goat, Rabbit or Poultry at the State Fair. 6 Livestock Projects HORSE WEIGH IN S /ID S MEAT GOAT Madison County 4H/FFA Open Horse Show Saturday June 18th, 2011 Madison County Fairgrounds, Winterset. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Show is open to only 4-H or FFA members and their horses currently ID d in their county. Flyer and Rules can be found on our website. Horse Judging Camp ISU is offering a 3 Day Camp for youth interested in horses and horse judging. The camp is June at Iowa State and is open to youth ages 12 to 18 years old interested in horses, judging, and meeting other youth. horsejudging Reminder final swine weigh-in will be April 23rd at the Montezuma School Sheep weigh-in will be April 30th at the Poweshiek Fairgrounds 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. ID s for every animal that has not been ID d at a weigh-in will be due to the Extension Office no later than May 16th by 4:30 (May 15th is a Sunday) (rabbits and poultry are the only exceptions) Reminder 4-Hers who attend the Tall Corn Meat Goat Jackpot Association 6th Annual Sale in Kalona on April 23rd will be eligible to win a meat goat club wether. The wether will be eligible to compete in the Tall corn Meat Goat Jackpot show in Washington, Iowa on August 6 and 7th. VETERINARY SCIENCE If you are interested in Veterinary Science mark your calendar for the Animal Science Round-Up as part of the State 4-H Conference June 28 30th. Registrations are open now. Another opportunity is the Iowa Sate Fair Vet Camp August Each of those days, a two hour program is offered at the fair. The camp is FREE with paid admission, but only 30 spots are available per session, so sign up early. The links for both of these can be found at our website. BOTTLE ANIMALS You will need to ID your bucket/bottle calf by May 15th the calf must be born between January 15th and May 15th of this year. On our website is the ID form as well as the worksheet you will need to complete for fair. Bottle Lambs A bottle lamb worksheet must be filled out and brought to fair with you the form is linked on our website or you may call the office. MARKET BROILERS The 2011 Iowa State Fair 4-H market broiler entry form is online and available on the poultry page, projects/livestock/poultry.htm. Remember, these special entries are due June 1 st to the State 4-H Office. No other entry is necessary for the market broiler division. The chicks will be delivered around June 20 th and an information letter will be sent out to all entrants in early June with more information 4-H IS BASED ON RESEARCH

7 County Council Corner County Council next meeting will be April 19th at Brownell s Big Spring Range. Meeting will begin at 4 p.m. Discussion will include recruitment, reporting on club visits, fundraising for fair activities. If you are interested in becoming part of the County Council please plan to attend.
