Forms are available in our office, or Hargrove@iastate.edu - Preparing for Summer Dear 4-H Families: I hope you re getting excited for summer! As you re preparing for summer camp, county fair, and family vacations, I m busy preparing to add to our family! David and I will be welcoming our daughter, Reba, sometime in May, and we re very excited. I will be out on maternity leave during the summer, so I will not be available to help in my usual capacity. However, to ensure all 4-H programs will happen without interruption, the Madison County Extension Council has hired an additional summer assistant. Both the 4-H assistant and Fair Intern will be available starting in mid-may to help with any questions or concerns you may have this summer. They will be responsible for camp & county fair activities. 3 Welcome 4-H Summer Assistant, Elizabeth (Libby) Nible! This summer, Libby Nible will serve as our new 4-H Summer Assistant. She completes her senior year at Van Meter High School in May. She has been a member of the Jefferson-Lee Jades club and Madison County 4-H for the past 9 years. She has exhibited rabbits, horses, dogs, cats, goats, chickens, communications, and various static exhibits. She has served as a member of the State 4-H Youth Council for two years, as well as a delegate for National Conference and National Congress. Libby is excited to experience fair from a new perspective this year, as well as further expand her involvement in Madison County 4-H. Don't be afraid to say hi, and please welcome her to the Madison County Extension Office. Her start date is Monday, May 16th. Her for this summer will be copd_enible@iastate.edu Welcome Madison County Fair Intern Kelsey Sands! This summer, Kelsey Sands will serve as our Madison County Fair Intern. She is from Moville, IA and is currently a senior at Iowa State University majoring in Animal Science and minoring in Speech Communications. She comes from a family farm where her family raises horses to be trained. She has experience as a cattle showman, and she has experienced raising a wide variety of different species on her family farm. Previously, Kelsey worked retail for Bomgaars and was a production intern for Schwartz Farms last summer in Sleepy Eye, MN. She looks forward to working with the Madison County Fair Board and the Madison County Extension Office this summer. Her start date is Tuesday, May 24th. Please tell her hello when you meet her! Reminder: Animal ID Due May 15th at 11:59 pm Animal Identification is now open on Iowa 4-H Online. Any youth who intend to show breeding beef, feeder/ prospect calf, cow/calf pair, dairy cattle, dairy goats, dogs, horses, rabbits, or poultry must identify their animals in Iowa 4-H Online no later than May 15th at 11:59 pm. A help sheet that will walk you through the process stepby-step can be found at this website: The website to identify your animals is: You will need to login using your family & password. If you need your password reset, please let me know. If you have any questions or need assistance with the process, please contact me at Hargrove@iastate.edu or I would be happy to sit down with your family to help you input animal identification information. Reminder: Sheep and Swine Verification Due May 15th in 4-H Online If you weighed-in sheep or swine for the 2016 show season, you must log in to 4-H Online to verify your animals weights and information no later than May 15th, 2016 at 11:59 pm. 4 Family & Volunteer News & Updates Registration is now open for 2016 Taste of Camp at the Iowa 4-H Center June 22-25, Youth currently in grades K-7 are eligible to attend camp. Regular camp is open to youth currently in grades 4-7, while mini camp is open to youth currently in grades kindergarten thru 3rd. At camp, youth can participate in a wide variety of activities including swimming, orienteering, rock wall climbing, zip lining, creek walking, crafts, games, and more. Campers sleep in air conditioned cabins and eat three meals daily at the dining hall, where kid-friendly meals are offered. Do you want to send your child to camp, but you re concerned about the cost? The Iowa 4-H Foundation offers scholarships for 4-H Campers! Visit their website at and click Funding Opportunities on the menu to learn more about 4-H Summer Camp Assistance. Chaperones and Counselors-in-Training are also needed. Responsibility Workshop The Jefferson Lee Jades will be hosting a Responsibility Workshop on Saturday, April 16th from 10:30-11:30 am. This workshop will be held at the Booneville United Methodist Church. There is no cost to attend. Join them to explore various aspects of responsibility! Showmanship Workshop The Crawford Hillsiders 4-H Club will be hosting a showmanship workshop on Saturday, April 16th from 2-4 pm at the Madison County Fairgrounds. There is no cost to attend. Join them to learn more about showmanship in the various species, plus get tips about preparing static exhibit projects and write-ups! Sheep & Meat Goat Weigh-In All youth planning to exhibit sheep or meat goats at the Madison County Fair must bring their 4-H/ FFA animals to the Madison County 4-H/FFA Sheep & Meat Goat Weigh-In on Saturday, April 23rd from 8-11 am at the Madison County Fairgrounds. All animals will be tagged and weighed at this time. We will also be collecting retinal scans for Iowa State Fair ($5 each) and hair samples for Ak-Sar-Ben ($5 each). 5 YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES Intermediate Trip to Minneapolis Deadline to Register Apr. 27 Intermediate 4-H ers, listen up! You have the opportunity to travel to the Twin Cities in Minnesota on June 7-8 with fellow 4-H ers from Dallas, Polk, Warren, Poweshiek, Mahaska, Jasper and Marion counties. Intermediates are youth who are in 7th and 8th grade during the academic year. The schedule includes stops at Cabela s, Minnesota Zoo, Mall of America, Rainforest Cafe, Target Field and Valleyfair. Youth tour Target Field and learn about careers in baseball in which you don t have to play! Each county sending youth has six guaranteed spots; there will be a waiting list once our six spots are reserved. The trip is $175; payment is required to hold your spot. To register, you will need to complete 1) Registration Form, 2) Code of Conduct, 3) copy of your insurance card and 4) payment. Contact Jennie for a registration form. Payment in the form of cash or check is accepted. Send all forms and payment to at the Extension Office by April 27, Fair Entry Period May 16-June 15 Fair Entry, our entry system for the Madison County Fair, will open on May 16th. Livestock entries will remain open until 11:59 pm on June 15th. All livestock fees are due on June 15th, or pending entries will be denied. 6 Horseless Horse Project Horseless Horse Specialty Club The Horseless Horse Club is a group of horse enthusiasts who what to learn about horses. We meet on Monday nights throughout the school year to learn about a variety of topics. This fall we concentrated on horse judging. Beginning in January we have been focusing on hippology. What is hippology? It is the study of the horse. Participants will learn about horse anatomy, health care, and nutrition to name a few topics. Horse ownership is not necessary to participate in these activities. Dates for meetings for 2016 are as follows: April 11 & 25, and May 11 & 25. We meet at the Foursquare Gospel Church in Winterset from 6:30-8:00 pm. If you have questions, please contact Jana Peters at jpeters1826@gmail.com or Madison County Horseless Horse Team brings home championship Horseless Horse youth competed in the State 4H Horse Extravaganza on March 4, 5, & 6 in Iowa Falls, Ia at Ellsworth Equestrian Center. They will be competed hippology, quiz bowl, horse judging, and individual demonstrations. The Senior Quiz Bowl team consisting of Sydney Hildebrand, Emma Lowden, Konnor Dimler, Alaina O Connor, & Paige O Connor captured the championship and will be representing Iowa 4H at the Great Western National Roundup in Denver, Colorado next January, Also competing in quiz bowl were Aundrea Cox, Sage Hildebrand, Victoria Pliler, and Shelby Dunbar. Hippology Participants were are follows: Senior Hippology Team Aundrea C, Paige O, Alaina O, & Vicotria P. Senior Individual competitors Sydney H & Emma L; Junior Individual participant Sage H. Hippology contest awards received: Sydney H 5 th place Senior Individual: Sage H Individual Junior Champion. Honors accumulated for Madison County: Sydney H 2 nd place overall, 1 st place class placings, & 10 th place oral reasons; Shelby D- 5 th place overall, 8 th in placings, 6 th in oral reasons; Sage H 2 nd place oral reasons.
