As we coming into the fair season, please take some time to read through the 4-H Scene. If you aren t willing to read, you risk missing important information, due dates, workshops and some fun activities. The Woodbury County Fairbook is available at the Woodbury County Extension Office in Sioux City and the Woodbury County Fair Office in Moville. 2 Clothing Selection, Fashion Review and $15 Challenge July 11 County judging for Fashion Revue (outfit that is sewn), Clothing Selection (purchased outfit) and the $15 Challenge (purchased a used outfit from a thrift shop, garage sale, etc. and not from a bargain rack at a store) will be held on Tuesday, July 11 from 5:30 p.m. 8:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Sergeant Bluff. 4-H members can come at any time between 5:30 8:00 pm to be judged. A report form for 4-H ers in 4-8 grades can be requested from the Woodbury County Extension office. Junior (4-6 grades) and Intermediate 4-H ers (7 and 8 grades) can also download the County Junior/ Intermediate form at: - the report is at the bottom of that page. Look at the side of that page for county report form for Junior/Intermediates. Senior members: 4-H ers who are in grades 9-12, must use the report forms from the web site located at: You will need to go under each event: Clothing Selection, Fashion Revue and/or $15 Challenge. Senior members may type into that form. This site also lists the evaluation form that 4-H judges will be using to evaluate your outfit. SMILE PLEASE: You will need a picture of yourself in your outfit no photos will be taken at the event. You can print off a paper copy or an actual photo and attach it to your report form. 4-H Consumer Judging Help How smart of a shopper are you? Can you make wise decisions? The 4-H consumer judging contest will be held during 4-H Exhibit Building judging at the Woodbury County Fair on July H consumer judging teaches 4-H'ers to make decisions by comparing items and deciding which is better. Check out the 4-H Consumer Judging website: consumerjudging.htm. Enter the contest on Monday, July 29 during the 4-H judging in the Varied Industry Building at the Woodbury County Fair. Adults may also enter the contest. A Junior Team and Intermediate/ Team will also be selected to compete at the Clay County Fair on Saturday, September 7 in Spencer Iowa. 4-H Dog Obedience Classes 4-H Dog Obedience classes will start June 2, 6:00 p.m. Classes will be held at the Woodbury County Fairgrounds. Other dates include: Sunday June 9, 16, 23 & 30, and July 7, 14 and 21 and 28. The 4-H Dog Superintendents, Jill Tentinger and Jamie Johnson will be holding the classes at the Woodbury County Fairgrounds in Moville, Iowa. 4-H dogs must have been identified in 4h Online at iowa.4honline.com by 11:59 pm on Wednesday, May H ers may enter two dogs in the obedience classes if the dogs are in different classes. 4-H ers must bring proof of current rabies and other vaccinations to the first class. Please bring a 6 ft leather lead to class. If you have any question and need more information on the 4-H Dog Program, please contact Jill Tentinger at or Jamie Johnson at Open Fun Dog Show June 22 Open Fun Dog Show on Saturday, June 22 at the Woodbury County Fairgrounds. This event is open to all ages from youth to adults. Registration starts at 8:15 am with events starting at 9:00 am approx. Noon. Cost is $20 for all day or $3 per event. A few of the events include: Best Smile, Best tail wag, Dog/Master look alike, Fastest Recall and much more. No females in season and must bring proof of vaccinations. Proceeds of this event will go towards equipment for the 4-H Dog program. 3 4-H Poultry Pictures Wanted The 4-H Superintendents and volunteer Peggy Davidson would like 4-H ers and former 4-H members to look through their record books, photo albums or computers and send in pictures showing them with their 4-H poultry projects. It can be pictures taken at the fair, at an event or at home with their projects. The pictures will be on display in the Poultry Barn at the Woodbury County Fair. Include with the picture your name and date of picture. Photos cannot be returned, so make sure you make a copy or scan a photo. Please send photos to the Woodbury County Extension Office or they can be ed to Lujean at faber@iastate.edu Wanted: 4-H County Council Members Do you enjoy working with other teens, doing community service and planning events for 4-H members? Then you will be interested in applying for the 4-H County Council. If you are going to be in 10th, 11th or 12th grade this fall and have been involved in 4-H for 2 years you already meet some of the requirements. The interview committee will look at your leadership, your interest in the 4-H program and if you are able to meet once a month and help at 4-H activities. Eligible 4-H ers can request an application for the Woodbury County 4-H Council from the Woodbury County Extension office or you can request one by from Lujean Faber at: faber@iastate.edu. Applications are due by Monday, July H ers will also need a letter of recommendation due to the Extension office by Monday, July 15. Interviews will be held the evening of Monday, July 22. This is a great opportunity for leadership, community service, and friendship! Contact Lujean at (712) faber@iastate.edu for more information. 4-H Shooting Sports New Club Starting Up June 9, 2013 at 6 PM, there will be a meeting for a new shooting sports club in Woodbury County. This club is open for anyone in Woodbury County 4-H. The meeting will be held at the old Correctionville school, across from the Methodist church in Correctionville. We will be playing games, having speakers, and snacks and beverages will be provided. Make sure to invite you friends, parents, and even grandparents if you are interested in archery, air rifle and.22. This meeting proves to be a lot of fun and provide a lot of information. The applications for the King contest is due July 7 and judging will take place on July H youth who are interested in the King or Queen Contest will find information on the Woodbury County Fair website. 4 Cook This! 4-H Culinary Challenge When: Friday and Saturday, August 9-10, 2013 Who: Teams of 3 (or apply as individuals or partial teams) Juniors: 5th-6th grade; Intermediates: 7th-9th grade; Seniors: 10th-12th grade; 8 teams will be selected to compete at each level. What: Similar to the Food Network show Chopped, teams will be given a basket with all the ingredients necessary to complete their recipes, each level having a different themed cuisine. Recipes will be provided prior to the competition. Each team will be judged on creativity, knife skills and the quality of their products. For the intermediate and senior level, a dessert challenge will be presented the day of competition. Applications due June 30th, participants announced July 15th. For information: At the 2012 State Fair Woodbury County 4-H ers, Jessica Kratz, Anna Plathe and Lauren Sobaski received the top state award in the junior division. Iowa State Fair 4-H Volunteer & Youth Staff Opportunities Available If you or know someone who is interested in volunteering or working for 4-H at the Iowa State Fair, applications are now available. Volunteers are needed for prep and set up dates (August 5-7), during the fair (August 8-18), as well as the day after (August 19). Youth Staff is needed during the fair. Again this year groups may volunteer! If your group (4-H club, county council, Extension staff, etc.) is interested in volunteering and hosting a day at the Fair, call Brandi Murley at or simply choose group on the online application. Applications are at Staff applications are due June 20 and volunteer applications are due July 5. Iowa 4-H Youth Conference Mandatory Orientation Meeting 4-H ers and other youth from Woodbury County who attend Conference MUST attend a mandatory orientation with a parent/guardian. The orientation will be held on Wednesday, June 5, 6:00 pm at the Woodbury County Extension Office. You can still register for State Conference by June 8, there is a late fee.check out the website at: the link for the online registration will also be on this State Conference website. Design West Workshops Explore Design: 7th-9th Graders will use hands on design projects to introduce students to the fun of design and creativity. Design Innovation: Is a two day workshop for 10th 12th grade students where they will be introduced to design careers, interact with local artists and designers, and explore educational paths. These forms can be filled out on your computer, saved and you can then either them or mail them. The 4-H forms for county fair will not be included in the 4-H Scene. 4-H ers may download the forms or request paper forms from your 4-H leader or the Woodbury County Extension Office. Thank you to Troy Lewis, Ron Meister, Grant Streck and Don Wiese for your support in this project and the help you gave towards this effort. New Flag Set The Climbing Hill Crusaders made a donation of a new American and 4-H flags along with stands. This new set will replace the flags that have been in use for almost 40 years. Thank you Climbing Hill Crusaders! 4-H ers for 4-H Campaign The campaign is now over. Special Thank you to Anthon Advancers, Bronson Rustlers and Triple S Hawkeyes for your donations to the Iowa 4-H program. Rabbit Tattooing June 25 4-H ers exhibiting rabbits at the Woodbury County Fair must have their rabbits tattooed. For those without tattoo equipment, a tattooing date is set for Monday, June 25 from 6 p.m. 8 p.m. at the Woodbury County Fairgrounds. Contact 4-H Rabbit Superintendents Teresa Lewis (712) or Tammy Brady (712) if you have questions. Tattoos are $1.00 each. Pullorum Testing June 30 All poultry exhibited at county fair must come from U.S. Pullorum-Typhoid clean or equivalent flocks (this means the location where your poultry is housed is NPIP certified (National Poultry Improvement Plan) or have a negative Pullorum-Typhoid test within 90 days of public exhibition and the test must have been performed by an authorized tester. The majority of 4-H members who exhibit poultry will not be NPIP certified and will have to have their birds tested if they plan to exhibit at county fair. The county testing date will be held on Sunday, June 30, 4:30 p.m. 7:00 p.m. at the Woodbury County Fairgrounds. Cost is 50 cents per bird (except doves and pigeons). 4-H members may have another Iowa certified tester test their birds, which needs to be done within 90 days of the county fair. 8 Iowa State Fair, Clay County Fair, & AK-SAR-BEN Livestock Listed below is information on State Fair (State Fair book is only available online), Clay County (Clay County rule books are available at the Woodbury County Extension office or use last year s book) and Ak-Sar-Ben (Ak-Sar-Ben rule book is only available online). Entry fees vary for each show. It is the responsibility of each 4-H er and their parents to read the rule book and follow entry rules. No entries will be accepted after the entry due date. Fees must also be paid at entry time. Iowa State Fair, Aug Entries & fees Due July 1 Livestock/Animal, Dog and Horticulture entries are due July 1. 4-H Building exhibits are selected during County Fair. 4-H'ers must have completed grade 5 to be eligible to exhibit at state fair. Premium books and open class entry forms will be available online at Entries will be made on 4honline and must be made by 11:59 p.m. on July 1. Checks must be mailed or taken to the Woodbury County Extension Office no later then July 2. For a help sheet on the entry process please visit For State Fair Livestock entries please visit: Clay County Fair, Sept Entries & fees Due July 15 Livestock entries and fees are due in the Woodbury Extension office on Monday, July 15. Additional sheep and swine may be identified for the Clay County Fair - contact the Woodbury office for details before May H ers must wear an official Clay County T-shirt. For more information on Clay County for 4-H go to website: Ak-Sar-Ben, Livestock Show: Sept Horse Show: Sept Entries & fees due August 12 Livestock and horse entries are due Monday, August 12 in the Woodbury Extension office. The rule book is only available online and will be out in early summer. Please note: 4-H ers who plan to exhibit hogs, lambs, meat goats and feeder calves must have the animal identified on the Sunday, May 15 Livestock Identification forms, but all DNA must be in the Extension office by June 1 to exhibit at Ak-Sar-Ben. Market Beef have already been identified. Recording your Animal s Health Now that most of the 4-H members have their animal projects. It is important that you start keeping records of their health and the medicines that you give your animals. 4-H members may go online at: and look for Drug Affidavits on that site. There are forms for: Beef, Horse, Meat Goats, Sheep and Swine. Because there are so many opportunities that 4-H provides for youth and volunteers not everything can be published in the 4-H Scene. The 4-H Weekly News is posted each Thursday afternoon by the State 4- H Office. Take a look at it and bookmark it: This week there is information on 4-H Photo Camp, Winner Circle Scholarships, and much more. Make it a habit to look at the information weekly! Proper Use of 4-H Name & Emblem As you move into the busy summer activity season, remember to properly use the 4-H Name & Emblem in and on all materials. T-shirts, newsletters, promotional materials, anything and everything. Official standards for using the 4-H Name & Emblem are found in Using the 4-H Name & Emblem at Give special attention to the graphics standards for the 4-H Emblem and proper use of the 4-H Name on pages 2 & 3 of the publication. 10 Woodbury County 4-H Foundation Announces Outstanding Seniors Five outstanding senior 4-H members were chosen to receive the Woodbury County 4-H Foundation Educational Incentive. This is the fourth year this award was offered. This year s outstanding seniors are: Derek Scott Widman, a graduate of Woodbury Central High School, will attend Iowa Western Community College in the fall and major in agribusiness. John Thomas Nelson, a graduate of Woodbury Central High School, will attend the Iowa State University in the fall and major in agricultural studies. Megan Lynn Meister, a graduate of Kingsley-Pierson High School, will attend Mount Marty College in the fall and major in psychology and special education. Kalli Kristine Weber, a graduate of Maple Valley-Anthon Oto High School, will attend Iowa State University in the fall and major in diet and exercise and agribusiness. Natalie Lord, a graduate of Bishop Heelan High School, will attend Benedictine College in the fall, her major is currently undecided. Each 4-H er received a $200 cash award to be used toward their college education. Four recipients are nine-year 4-H members. Iowa State University Extension Woodbury County and Woodbury County 4-H Foundation would like to congratulate each of them for their achievements. Recognition Geocache Dash June 19 Bring your family, club and friends to the Woodbury County Fairgrounds, 210 Fair Street in Moville on Wednesday, June 19, for an evening of geocaching fun. Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. Woodbury County 4-H will have GPS locators available for use by participants. This event is a fundraiser for Woodbury County 4-H Foundation. Registration, meal and games begin at 6:30 p.m. with the Geocache Dash beginning at 7:30 p.m. Please meet at the Varied Industry Building at the Woodbury County Fairgrounds The goal of the Woodbury County 4-H Foundation is to raise money to invest so that more youth may participate in camps, trips, conferences, apply for scholarships, and gain confidence through leadership activities and communication events. Registration is $10 per person which includes a backpack, meal, games and geocache. All proceeds benefit the Woodbury County 4-H Foundation. Pre-registration by Friday, June 7 is encouraged.
