The 2009 fall 4-H leaders training consisted of information on how parents can help their child in 4-H. There are many ways in which parents can be helpful. All you need to do is visit with your 4-H leader on how you can help. Do take time to learn about 4-H, read the newsletter, go to the 4-H website or ask questions Do advise your child in selecting 4-H projects sometime it may not be possible for a 4-H er to exhibit an animal, but they could still enter an exhibit under animal science Do encourage your child to participate in 4-H by attending club meetings, going to events to help them and you learn more about 4-H Do give encouragement to your child when they succeed but especially when they may fail Do offer your home for meetings, volunteer your hobbies Do remember that 4-H Leaders volunteer their own time for the benefit of your child don t forget to show them your appreciation, it is always easy to criticize, but put yourself in their place Parent s 4-H Pledge I pledge my HEAD to give information to help my child see things clearly and to make wise decisions. I pledge my HEART to encourage and support my child, whether he has successes or disappointments. I pledge my HANDS to help my child's club; if I cannot be a leader, I can help in many equally important ways. I pledge my HEALTH to keep my child strong and well for a better world through 4-H, for my child's club, our community, our country, and our world. Ask yourself why you wanted your child to join 4-H. If it is to win, you will be disappointed. If it is so your child can learn and become involved in a worthwhile activity, you will be satisfied. Be a supportive parent and help your child and 4-H Leaders to Make the Best Better! 3 Iowa 4-H Youth Conference 2010 The theme for the 2010 Iowa 4-H Youth Conference has been decided: Set the Stage. Please mark your calendars now for this event, June 29-July 1, More details about the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference for 4-H ers who have completed 8 th grade through 12 th grade as of May 2010 will come after the first of the year. A Woodbury & Plymouth bus will be available again if Woodbury 4-H ers ride the bus, their cost is free! Give the Gift of Grain to Benefit Iowa 4-H Crop producers who want to support Iowa 4-H Youth Development can decrease their federal income taxes by as much as 40%. By giving the gift of grain, farmers impact youth across the state and can also avoid including the sale of the cash crop in income and can still deduct the cost of growing the crop. These funds can be directed to local county endowments through the Iowa 4-H Foundation to make an impact on your local 4-H program. Please note: To qualify for the highest tax savings, crops must be donated from the previous tax year. If you have grain left over from 2008, it will qualify, otherwise wait until January 1st to donate grain from Gifts of grain grown in the current year are welcome, but do not incur the same tax advantages. For specific instructions on how to donate grain to support 4-H, contact Albert Grunenwald at (515) or abgrunen@iastate.edu Area 4-H Awards start setting your goals now! 4-H ers in grades 9 12 are eligible for area awards. 4-H ers may apply for project awards, 4-H congress, 4-H conference, state council or tech team.
