2 National 4-H Week Thanks to all 4-H ers, clubs and community members that helped promote National 4-H week with window displays, baking goodies for supporters and sharing your 4-H spirit with friends. Thanks to the Whiting Badgers for sending flowers to the Monona County Extension Staff. Promoting 4-H never stops. The impact of 4-H ers is felt all across the county, yearround. Keep up the good work! CyDay Friday Cyclone Gear Winners Congratulations to Larry Sessions for winning the ISU Cyclone Cooler, koozies, key chain & flag prize pack. Larry wore a Cyclone shirt to our CyDay lunch. Lori Beck shared the Monona County Extension Facebook page and won the ISU Cyclone chair, key chain and license plate frame. Fran Haack was awarded the jar full of goodies she guessed the correct amount of items in that jar. Thanks to everyone that showed their Cyclone spirit and participated in CyDay Friday! Fair Fright Nights Thanks to all volunteers that made Fair Fright Nights a success. This was a lot of fun to be a part of and it s a great thing to bring to our community. We are looking forward to next year! No Mapleton Clover Kids in Nov-Dec There will be no Mapleton Clover Kids meetings in November or December. The leader will be on extended medical leave. Meetings will resume on January 8th. Cooking Club to Meet 3rd Saturdays of Each Month The 4-H Cooking Club will be changing the regular meetings to the 3rd Saturday of each month. Meetings used to be on the 2nd Sunday of each month. Plan to meet at 10:00 a.m. at the Faith Bible Church in Mapleton. 3 New 4-H Dog Club All current dog participants and other youth interested in learning about dogs are invited to join the new 4-H dog club. Dog superintendent Megan Wimmer will be leading the club and plans to offer citizenship opportunities while teaching members about dog breeds, Grooming, obedience and more. Megan also has plans to begin dog agility training in the spring so it can be offered as a class at the 2018 Monona County Fair. Call Megan Wimmer at if you are interested or have questions. 4-H Club Challenge The following clubs submitted challenge reports and were awarded money for their club based on club, member and leader participation: Franklin-Go-Getters $50 Mapleton Starspinners $50 We encourage all clubs to keep track of their participation throughout the year and submit a form in the fall. It is an easy way to earn money to support your club. Club Challenge Reports are available at the Extension Office. 4-H Project Awards Congratulations to all 4-H ers that applied for project awards. The 4-H Youth Committee is currently reviewing those awards. Awards will distributed to your club leaders soon. Each award recipient will receive project discs. Great work, everyone! Encourage others to apply for 4-H project awards next year. It really isn t that hard if you do it when you are doing your project. The experience will help you in future school work, job applications and more. Join the $400 Club The Monona County 4-H Fund Board was formed in The purpose was to support significant experiences and add to the ability of the 4-H Youth Program to serve the youth of Monona County in a more effective way. We have given scholarships to 136 eligible graduating Senior 4-H ers the past 16 years. Over the past few years to generate money for this fund, the Board has sponsored the Silent Auction at the fair. We are also asking 4-H Clubs to support the 4-H Foundation by contributing to the $400 or $1000 Club membership. You can pay $100 a year for 4 years on the $400 sponsorship level. Thanks for you continued support of the Monona County 4-H Fund Board. 3

4 Market Beef Weigh-In Saturday, December 16 9:00 a.m. 11:30 a.m. Dunlap Livestock Auction Crawford County: Saturday, December 23 County Ear Tag: $1.25 DNA for Ak-Sar-Ben- $6 All 4-H members that are considering showing market beef for the Monona County Fair and/or Ak-Sar-Ben or the Iowa State Fair MUST have their cow weighed and tagged at an official county weigh-in. All entries must be verified in 4-H online by the exhibitor no later January 26. Each member may weigh in and tag up to 12 animals. You will be permitted to exhibit not more than 3 individual market beef entries. All market beef must be weighed in (Steer, Heifers, Pen-of-Three, Share-a-Calf). Pen-of-three s may be market steers or heifers. A pen is one entry. Keep in mind, you may show individuals out of your pen-of-three if you also weigh each animal separately. You will need to fill out ID sheets the day of weigh-in. Breeding animals must be identified by May 15 th. Re-enrollment for Year Enrollment and re-enrollment for the H year is online. Visit Every member must be enrolled in 4-H online to be able to attend meetings and events and to be eligible for insurance coverage offered through the county 4-H program. Enrollment fees of $10 can be paid directly to your club leaders. Contact Melissa or Keith if you need to re-set your password or need assistance with re-enrolling. Very Important: If you do not remember your login info, DO NOT CREATE A NEW ACCOUNT IN 4-H ONLINE! Call the office for assistance. Clay County Fair Results Final results for all exhibitors can be found at: Congratulations to all Monona County 4-H ers that participated in the regional fair in Clay County! 4-H County Council Congratulations to our new and returning 4-H county council members for completing the application and interview process to be selected as Monona County 4-H County Council members. We will be electing Council Officers at the November meeting. We have a large group of 9-12th grade 4-H members ready to lead and promote 4-H throughout the county. Members visited youngsters at local schools during National 4-H week, they are planning an Escape Room trip this year, along with more improvements for the county fair and 4-H events. Look to County Council members in your club when you have questions or need guidance on your projects. 4

5 4-H Officer s Leadership Workshop Iowa State University Collegiate 4-H club will be presenting a 4-H Officers Leadership Workshop on Sunday, November 5. It will be held from 2:00 4:00 p.m. at the Woodbury office located at 2728 Southern Hills Drive. The workshop is open to 4-H members in Monona, Plymouth and Woodbury Counties. 4-H members will first learn about leadership and how 4-H members can improve their leadership skills. 4-H ers will split into individual workshops on the different officer positions. The whole group will come together and hold a mock meeting and go through parliamentary procedure. This is an exciting opportunity to meet college students who are in the ISU Collegiate 4-H Club and 4-H members from our region; and have fun learning about leadership. The workshop is for all ages. Please share with this opportunity with your club members. Anyone interested in attending the workshop may Lujean Faber at faber@iastate.edu by November 1. Healthy Club Challenge Healthy Living is one of 4-H s program priority areas. This year, a new challenge has been organized to engage 4-H clubs across the state to incorporate Healthy Living practices during their monthly club meetings. Each meeting, clubs have 3 challenge topic areas that they can complete to earn miles in the Race Across Iowa. *Offering water as the main beverage *Having fruits or vegetables as a snack option *Organizing structured physical activity From November through the month of June, clubs will have 8 months to Race Across Iowa on our 1,400 mile route through all 20 regions. Each of the challenge areas earns them an amount of miles. Periodically, a Bonus Challenge will be revealed for clubs to engage in to earn extra miles. Check out the webpage for more details and resources to help accomplish the varying challenge areas. The Top 5 clubs in the state accumulating the most miles will be recognized at the Iowa State Fair in August! The webpage has a summary of the program that can be a resource for club leaders and counties. On our 4-H website, you will find a link for the 4-H Healthy Living Club Challenge webpage. The page will provide the links for clubs to register as well as submit their monthly trackers. It also will contain additional resources and tools to help them be successful in the challenge. These resources will be added in the coming month, and the webpage will be updated throughout the year as we find and approve more resources. We encourage clubs to showcase their success via social media: Facebook, Instagram, twitter, etc. Club leaders or youth can tweet, post and tag Iowa 4-H with photos of their monthly successes. NATIONAL NEWS Citizenship Washington Focus What does it mean to be a good citizen or a leader? Are you being a strong civic leader for your community, country, and world? Explore these topics at Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF). The 2018 trip is set for June at the National 4-H Conference Center in the Washington, DC, area. CWF is more than just another DC field trip. 4-H ers learn essential civic leadership skills and leave with the tools that will allow them to bring about real change in their communities.
