Celebrate National 4 H by wearing your 4 H shirt on Wednesday October 10! 4-H Fall Celebration/Banquet Sunday, November 4, 2018 at 12:30 p.m. at Elwood Civic Center YOU are invited!! The fall event is a way to celebrate the accomplishments of 4-H ers, leaders and the 4-H community. All are invited to attend. The entertainment will be highlights from our 4-H clubs. 4-H club members and leaders have been asked to provide a three to five minute update of club happenings and successes from their year. The food is always a highlight with Pinnacle Bank providing the main dish. To complete the meal, each 4-H family is asked to bring two dishes to share with others which may be either sides or desserts, along with serving utensils. Paper goods and beverages will be provided by the Gosper 4-H Council. Council members are asked to be at the Civic Center at 11:00 to set up tables for the banquet. 2 Gosper County 4-H Council Invites New Members Youth and adult members are needed. If you are a teen 4-H member, you are eligible to serve on this leadership board. Youth members serve a two year term and are eligible for re-election. Adults serve a term of 3 years and are eligible for re-election. This is a great opportunity to serve your county s 4-H program! If you would like your name placed on the ballot for this year s 4-H Council, please give us a call or by November 1. Voting will take place at the 4-H Fall Celebration on Nov 4. Reminder: If your family has a change of address, phone number or address, please let the Extension office know, so that you do not miss any important information or deadlines! Clover Kids 4-H Clover Kids and families are invited to the 4-H Banquet Nov. 4. Each Clover Kid will receive a special gift from the Phelps County 4-H Council. Range Judging Congratulations to our FFA range judgers! Nebraska Extension was so glad to be part of your contest day in Elwood and we were excited and proud to see your accomplishments! 4-H Club Meeting Space Available During National 4-H Week and throughout the year, 4-H clubs are invited to conduct their 4-H meetings at the Civic Center in Elwood at no charge. Our office will help you make reservations in the building. However, please leave the rooms in even better condition than you found them! Remember to sweep the room, check the restrooms for trash, wipe out sinks and put away any tables and chairs that you may have gotten out. Take care to not damage the walls or flooring so that this generous offer of rooms stays available to us. Meeting Space Special Announcement! We are so excited to share that the Civic Center will be getting a remodel of their restrooms this winter. With this, we wanted to let you all know that the Civic Center will be unavailable for general use from mid-november through the end of March. However, your 4-H club may still use the south side of the building for a meeting space when you would be meeting for a short amount of time with smaller groups. There will NOT be restrooms available and there will NOT be water. 4-H ers would ONLY be allowed in the Civic Center side and not the Legion or north side of the building. There are several other meeting spaces in Gosper County available to 4-H groups that would be more appropriate during this time. Please connect with us if you need suggestions! Page 2:October 2018

3 4-H School Programs 4-H offers educational experiences across several delivery methods in Phelps and Gosper counties to be able to involve our youth in cutting-edge programs. Educational experiences are being conducted this fall in our schools and include Youth Science Field Day, leadership programs, Animals Inside and Out and 4-H Healthy Habits in several of our elementary schools with more to come! Youth Engaged in Leading People Gosper county Youth Engaged in Leading People-Gosper County is a leadership academy that begins at the first of the calendar year for high school sophomores. YELP students learn personal leadership skills, connect to community leaders and apply their leadership skills to the planning of community service learning projects. The 2018 YELP group has been applying their leadership skills through community projects throughout the year. The applications for sophomore students to apply for the 2018 YELP class will be to your schools Elwood Community Foundation and Nebraska Extension in cooperation with the Elwood Public Schools. 4-H Volunteer Opportunity Welcome to the Nebraska 4-H volunteer opportunity! All Nebraska 4-H volunteers must complete the Youth Protection 4-H Volunteer Screening before volunteering with 4-H in any capacity. Volunteer screening is done in order to assure a safe, positive, and nurturing environment for all youth involved with the Nebraska 4-H programs and provide protection for the child, the volunteer, the educator, the 4-H Council, the Extension Board, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension. Initial screening of volunteers and staff will occur when they sign up to volunteer or are employed as an Extension professional. Re-screening for volunteers will be done every five years by district regardless of when the original screening was completed. Young Liam Brell is shown with his H Bucket Calf. This little Charolais steer will grow over one-thousand pounds in the next year! The 4-H Beef project engages youth to explore the beef industry, learn about breeds, health, feed, behavior, judging and showing a calf, ethical issues, reproduction, marketing, careers and more. 4 The 4-H Reporter MARTHA AND DON ROMEO SCHOLARSHIP FUND NEBRASKA ASSOCIATION OF FAIR MANAGERS The Nebraska Association of Fair Managers will award a $500 scholarship to one qualifying 4-H male and a $500 scholarship to one qualifying 4-H female who are graduating seniors in the State of Nebraska and who plan to continue with post high school education. The scholarship will be awarded at the annual NAFM convention in January. Applications available in the Office. Applications are due in the applicant s local County Extension Office by December 1, H Club of the Month The Nebraska 4-H Foundation provides the 4-H Club of the Month program to all Nebraska 4-H clubs throughout the state. Clubs can nominate themselves by telling why their club should be chosen as Club of the Month. A different club will be chosen each month and will be awarded with a certificate and $50 cash card. Animal Science Complex UNL-East Campus October 22, 2018 from 6 8 p.m. Did you know you could attend the University of Nebraska and get a degree focused on companion animals, horses or livestock? Middle and high school students interested in pursing a degree in animal science with a focus on companion animals, horses, or livestock, will have the opportunity to meet with our faculty and get information on majors and classes offered. Students will venture through the animal science building on a scavenger hunt for information. They will also hear about the various animal-related organizations such as Equestrian team,livestock and Horse Judging teams, Students for the Education of Exotic and Companion Animals, Pre-Vet Club, and Block and Bridle Club. The object of the contest is to promote the beauty and versatility of wool fabric and yarn; to encourage personal creations in sewing, knitting, crocheting, spinning and weaving of wool fabric; and to recognize creative skills. The 2018 State Make It With Wool Contest will be November 17 at the Dawson County Extension Office in Lexington NE beginning at 9:00 am. Public fashion show is at 1:00 pm. 5 Nebraska 4-H Fed Steer Challenge Looking to challenge yourself as a young beef producer? Nebraska 4-H along with the University of Nebraska Lincoln Department of Animal Science is offering the Nebraska 4-H Fed Steer Challenge for youth ages 14 and up. The Fed Steer Challenge is designed to: Cultivate the next generation of leaders in the Nebraska cattle industry Enhance the educational value of the traditional 4-H beef projects Provide an affordable option that rewards production merit and carcass value of the market animal Encourage accurate and complete record keeping, industry knowledge, and producer engagement by 4-H members Find the application and more information at or contact Paige at for more information! Application Due: October 15, NATIONAL WESTERN 4-H CATCH-A-CALF APPLICANTS WANTED A limited number of 4-H members have the opportunity to catch a calf each January during the National Western Stock Show held in Denver, Colorado. Successful catchers will receive their calf in May 2019 to begin feeding the calf to market finish. Youth must show and sell their calf at the 2020 National Western Stock Show.. 4-H members may apply online at: or check with your Nebraska Extension Office. To apply, applicants must be between the ages of 12 and 18 as of December 31, 2018 and must be enrolled in 4-H at the time of application. Past recordings can also be found at Cat Club The Cat Club is a monthly webinar series providing an opportunity for all youth, parents, and volunteers to gain knowledge about cats and showing cat in 4 -H. Youth do not need to be enrolled 4-H members to participate. Webinars are held on the second Thursday of each month. WHAT IS IANR?
