1 WOODBURY COUNTY EXTENSION NOVEMBER H SCENE Lujean Faber WOODBURY COUNTY EXTENSION Youth Development Educator (712) From the desk of Lujean Faber... WHAT S INSIDE: Enrollment Information 2 4-H News H Pride Contest Pictures 8 Calendar 9 4-H is the first college course a 4-H member will take. In Iowa, 4-H is associated with the Iowa State University. College educators in the late 19th and early 20th centuries were reaching beyond the campus to teach. Agricultural college professors in nearly all states were organizing farmers institutes meetings to bring the latest scientific agricultural information to farmers and their wives. College educators soon recognized the need to also provide some agricultural instruction for farm boys and girls as well as instilling an appreciation for life in the country. Today young people may participate in 4-H community or project clubs, special interest groups, or school enrichment programs. 4-H is available in towns and cities as well as in rural areas. For more on the history of 4-H: go to Did you know? Young people involved in 4-H are nearly four times more likely to contribute to their communities; two times more likely to pursue healthy behaviors; and two times more likely to engage in STEM programs outside of normal school hours (according to Tufts University 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development) SERGEANT RD., #213, SIOUX CITY, IOWA, (712) MON. - FRI. 8:00-4:30 LEARN MORE AT Iowa State University Extension programs are available to all without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, or disability.

4 4-H & Fair Committee The 4-H and Fair Committee will meet on Thursday, January 8, 7:00 p.m. at the fair office on the fairgrounds. Agenda items: clarification on ribbons and premiums, clarify rules; approve H fair superintendents and update of programs. Anyone interested in becoming a 4-H superintendent, please let us know. If you are interested in becoming a member of the 4-H & Fair Committee, please contact Lujean Faber or Wayne Ralston. The committee meets 3-4 times a year. Planning a skating party, sledding event or other winter type recreation? This is important information! When planning any event it is always important to think about any potential risks and how adults can make an area or event safer for 4-H members. Even though we don t have snow yet, 4-H clubs may be planning sledding parties, ice-skating parties or other outdoor winter activities. With winter activities, extra precautions need to be taken and the proper paperwork completed. It s really not that hard to get the extra medical insurance coverage, especially if the club wants to plan a winter event. Here is what you will need to do while your club members are in the planning stages of your event: Contact Lujean Faber at the Extension office with the date and address of the event. Lujean will need to know the approximate number of members so that special insurance can be obtained. It s 30 cents per member or $8 minimum per event (the club will need to pay this fee). All the medical forms need to be filled out in 4-H Online. 4-H leaders need to have copies of the medical forms. If you cannot get them in 4-H Online, let the office know and we can help you with that. Lujean will send the leader waiver forms that will be specific to your event. The date and location of the event must also be reported. Each 4-H er and parent will need to sign the waivers before the event. The leader will give those signed waiver forms to the Extension office to be filed once the event is done. After the event, Lujean will need the exact number of participants who attended. This number is given to the insurance company. The insurance company will the leader a bill for the extra cost of the event. The club will then need to submit the check directly to the Insurance Company. Please plan ahead Lujean is not always in the office to help leaders with the details. If there is an accident: The leader needs to fill out an Iowa 4-H Program Incident/Injury Report (you should have these forms on file, if you don t, contact Lujean). Contact the Extension office, ask for Lujean or if Lujean is not available ask for Adrienne Jansen and let us know about the incident/injury. Lujean will send a claims report that will need to be filled out by the 4-H leader. It s very important that all this gets done. It s not hard to do, but just takes a little time and pre-planning. 4-H leaders need to contact Lujean whenever the club has a special event planned. Not all events will need the extra paperwork, but you will need an OK from Lujean; Lujean at: faber@iastate.edu. If you don t hear back from Lujean contact the Woodbury County Extension office at (712) H PLEDGE I PLEDGE MY HEAD TO CLEARER THINKING, MY HEART TO GREATER LOYALTY, MY HANDS TO LARGER SERVICE, AND MY HEALTH TO BETTER LIVING, FOR MY CLUB, MY COMMUNITY, MY COUNTRY, AND MY WORLD. 4

5 4-H Recognition for State and County Awards It s not too early to start thinking about State and County Recognition. Check out the Iowa 4-H website on what opportunities are available for awards and recognition. State 4-H Awards: State Project Awards (for 4-H ers in grades 9-11) National 4-H Congress (for 4-H ers in grades 10-11) National 4-H Conference (for 4-H ers in grades 9-11) State 4-H Council (for 4-H ers in grades 9-12) National Dairy Conference (for 4-H ers in grades 9-12, application is due in July) Applications are done online and will be due February 1 to the State 4-H office. You can reach her at or faber@iastate.edu Thank you to the 4-H County Council for planning the 4-H Halloween Party! Also thank you to the Moms that stayed. 4-H IS BASED ON RESEARCH 5

6 4-H Volunteer Training The Heart of Belonging 4-H leaders will learn how to guide youth in developing a list of club or group expectations that accommodates all members, learn how to support youth with special needs, and discover resources to help them in their role as caring adults. In addition, volunteers will learn new activities to take back their clubs and groups to foster positive behavior and belonging. Amanda Seuntjens, 4-H Overall Building Superintendent, will be attending each of the workshops to talk about elements of design & art principles and copyright as it relates to 4-H exhibits. We will also talk about the 4-H Club audits we will be conducting this year. We ll talk about what forms we need and help you prepare for the audit. This training is part of the statewide leader training that is required of volunteers who work with youth. Both trainings will start with a supper at 6:30 p.m. followed by training at 7:00 p.m. Volunteers can attend one of the following: Tuesday, November 11, in Moville at the Woodbury County Fairgrounds at the fair office Or Tuesday, December 2, in Sioux City at the Woodbury County Extension office Or If you cannot attend either training, we will schedule a make-up session.
