It only takes a few minutes and we need this completed before you can continue to participate in activities and meetings! With National 4-H Week just around the corner, let s really promote and recruit and blow our membership numbers through the roof! Take a look inside to see all the fun things taking place during 4-H week. We have some exciting activities planned this month. Be sure to invite new families to attend the Halloween party and Recognition Event! sessions will continue at the Fairgrounds on Tuesday nights at 7:00 p.m. through October 21. We also have had a huge response to Clover Kids registrations! Make plans in December to attend the Christmas Village at the Fairgrounds. The committee is so grateful for your generosity each year in donating cookies to the cause. They appreciate all the effort you put into it! They are again asking for each club to donate dozen cookies to serve during the event in the first two weekends in December. 2 Page2 4-H LIVESTOCK NEWS Market Beef Weigh In All Plymouth County 4-H and FFA members with a market beef animal will need to weigh and identify their market animals at the Plymouth County weigh-in site on Saturday, December 20, 2014 from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. It will take place at the Plymouth County Fairgrounds in the scale barn just east of the covered show ring. All Plymouth County 4-H ers will need to make arrangements to have their market beef projects weighed at the Congrats to the Clay County Fair Livestock Exhibitors Plymouth County was well represented at the 2014 Clay County Fair. Congratulations on all of your hard work! December 20 th is when your 4-H project begins and you must have all market beef animals in your possession by this date. Each member may identify a maximum of six head. If there is an emergency and this date does not work you must first contact our office. No animals can be purchased after the weigh-in date and weighed in at another location. That check was the sum of swine sales, auction, and ribbon premiums. So each member received one check for the total that was mailed on August 11. In the envelope there were receipts send them a note! Contact the Extension Office if you need an address. showing how much came from each area along with addresses to send thank you notes for the auction. There are still many outstanding checks! The Fairboard requests that you get these to the bank ASAP! MISSION STATEMENT 4-H EMPOWERS YOUTH TO REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL WORKING AND LEARNING IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CARING ADULTS

3 Page3 UPCOMING PROGRAMS CONT. County 4-H Halloween Party The County Council and 4-H & Youth Committee are gearing up for a SPOOKtacular county wide, fun for the whole family, Halloween party filled with games, prizes, food, and FUN! It will take place on Saturday, November 1 from 1:30-3:00 p.m. at the Extension Office. All are encouraged to come dressed in costume. 4-H ers can also bring a jack-olantern or decorated pumpkin with their name printed on the bottom. There will be prizes for the top 5 costumes and top 5 pumpkins! These will be announced at 2:45 p.m. This event will be for all 4-H families to enjoy. There will be lots of games, prizes, a haunted house, and treats! Plan to attend and bring a potential 4-H member to join in on all the fun! National 4-H Week National 4-H Week is coming up and we have lots of fun planned! 4-H ers from all over the world will be celebrating October 5-11! I can t wait to see all of your window displays! Let s show Plymouth County that 4-H is everywhere! I know we can get our enrollment back up. We will be sending home 4-H information to 4 th and 5 th graders as well as in 8 th grade folders the Board of Regents has donated! You will see TV commercials on KTIV as well as radio commercials! The National 4-H Center is celebrating with the theme #iam4h. Everyone is encouraged to share their pride photo on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, along with the #iam4h and #4HWeek hashtags. You can check the ISU Extension and Outreach Plymouth County Facebook page to see how the leaders celebrated at their training last week! Let s have fun this next week by making each day a different adventure: Sign-up Sunday: Get your enrollment done! Make an Appearance Monday: Hang up locker posters and posters everywhere in your community! Talk about 4-H Tuesday: Spread the word talk on school announcements, talk to the radio, talk to the newspaper! Share what 4-H can do! Wear a 4-H Shirt Wednesday: Show your 4-H spirit! Thank a 4-H Volunteer Thursday Do something special for all those special volunteers that make 4-H happen! Tell a Friend Friday: Tell someone about 4-H and get them to come to your next meeting! Community Service Saturday: Get your club together to give back to your community! Be sure to send me pictures of all of the fun things you do to promote and celebrate 4-H! National Soybean Association Scholarship The Secure Optimal Yield (SOY) Scholarship is a $5,000 one-time scholarship award presented to a high school senior who is going to pursue agriculture as an area of study at any accredited college or university. The scholarship is managed by the American Soybean Association and is made possible through a grant by BASF Corporation. Candidates may apply online Sept. 20 through Nov. 20, Final selection will be made the first week of December during the ASA Board meeting. 4 Page4 UPCOMING PROGRAMS CONT. 4-H Recognition Event Mark your calendars to attend the annual event on Sunday, November 23 beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the Le Mars Convention Center, Upper Level. All leaders, members, parents, relatives, and volunteers are encouraged to attend. Club members should sit with Citizenship Washington Focus Trip The Citizenship Washington Focus Trip is one every senior 4-H er needs to participate in! The trip used to be offered at the regional level every other year. It is now a state sponsored trip which is being offered every year. This past summer the bus started in northwest Iowa and so this next summer it will start in the southern part of Iowa! You are still able to attend no matter what county you live in! Citizenship Washington Focus 2015 is a nine-day trip for 4-H youth in grades 9-12 which provides a setting to experience both leadership and citizenship in an up-close, unique way at the National 4-H Center. The 2015 trip will take place June H ers and adult chaperones will travel by chartered bus to 4-H NEWS Washington D.C. Trip Highlights: Flight 93 Memorial, Gettysburg Battlefield, Mount Vernon, Iwo Jima Memorial, Nightview of Washington D.C., Arlington National Cemetery, FDR Memorial, Capitol Hill, Union Station, Air Force Memorial or Twilight Tattoo, National Cathedral or Smithsonian Zoo, Theater Productions, National Mall, Smithsonian Museum and Holocaust Museum. Besides tours and workshops, participants will have time for socializing and meeting new friends! The trip fee is $1,550. This includes lodging, transportation, tour site admissions and most meals. Registration and a $490 deposit will be required to secure a spot. Registration is now open and closes November 15, To learn more about the trip and to get registration information visit: Clay County Fair Communication Exhibitors Congrats on being selected to represent Plymouth County at the Clay County Fair. The following 4-H ers advanced on and competed at Clay County: their club and everyone else sits in the center section. Many awards will be presented and everyone who is there will be recognized for their years of being a club member. Come support your club and enjoy the refreshments following the program! Share-the-Fun: Bailey Ard Educational Presentation: Mackenzie Schram Fair Grand Champion Photo Traveling Display The Plymouth County Farm Bureau is again sponsoring the traveling photo display of the 2014 Plymouth County Fair Grand Champions at various bank locations throughout the county this fall. The schedule is as follows: October 6-10: Pinnacle Bank-Hinton October 13-17: Iowa Prairie Bank - Hinton 4-H Club Officer Books Due Treasurer Books Required 4-H club officers are strongly encouraged to submit their books for judging. Prize money is awarded to the top three books for each office. Officer books must be submitted to the Extension Office by Friday, October 3 October 20-24: Iowa Prairie Bank-Merrill October 27-31: Iowa Prairie Bank-Brunsville November 3-7: Security National Bank-Akron November 10-14: People s Bank - Akron November 17-21: Iowa State Bank -Craig November 24-28: American Bank Le Mars by 4:30 p.m. We do need all treasurers books turned in for an annual audit like last year. You can designate if you would like it to be considered for an award!
