3 Page 3 White County 4-H Newsletter June 2018 We Have a Winner White County 4-H Public Presentations were held this year on May 3 at 6:00 p.m. at the Supportive Living of Wabash Apartments in Carmi. Six 4-H members: Braelyn Russell, Madison Roberson, Brenna Russell, Annsley Healy, Caitlin South, and Laney York gave presentations on subjects that they chose themselves. Braelyn and Madison gave an Oral Interpretation Speech; Brenna and Annsley gave a Formal Speech, and Caitlin and Laney presented an Illustrated Speech. Rachel Parish of Harrisburg judged the members. The presenters did a great job this year. Braelyn received an A rating and a Superior for her oral interpretation "There is a Monster at the End of This Book". Madison received an A rating Best of Show, a Superior, and a State 4-H Public Presentation opportunity for her oral interpretation of "How to Forgive". Brenna received an A rating, Best of Show, and Superior for talking about "Bullying" on her formal speech. Annsley received an A rating and a Superior for her formal speech titled "Walt Disney". Caitlin received an A rating and a Superior for her illustrated speech "Deaths, Starving in Alaska". Laney received an A rating, Best of Show, Superior, and a State 4-H Public Presentation opportunity for her illustrated speech Hoof Care Through the Ages. KHK Committee Meeting Scheduled!! Please join us on June 13 at 4:30 to help finalize plans for the ice cream truck fundraiser for Kids Helping Kids. Everyone is invited to attend! The ice cream truck will be on the Elastec parking lot July 3 and 4. This will be the only fundraiser till 2019 for KHK, so please plan on assisting or promoting this in July. We also helped with prom for multiple high school students in the last month or so. Contact Amber Ochs for more information.

Please contact the office at if you are able to help by June 5. White County 4-H members will once again be assisting in the setting up of Luminaries around the high school track. Anyone with or without a wagon, please come at 4:00pm on June 15 and help us set up. More people means less time it takes! Rabbit Tattooing Mike Wilson, 2018 rabbit show judge, will be at the Extension Office tattooing your rabbits on June 10 at 1:00pm. You will have to have your rabbit tattooed to show in the rabbit show on July 9. White County 4-H Shooting Sports Shoots are in the works for June. Keep an eye on Facebook and for upcoming shoots.

6 Page 6 White County 4-H Newsletter June 2018 Unit 24 4-H Livestock Showmanship Clinic Who: All 4-H members ages 8-18 When: 9:00 a.m. Saturday, June 16, 2018 Where: White County Fairgrounds Livestock Barn, Carmi Livestock members or those thinking about becoming an owner of livestock, may come and join us for an informal clinic and learn all about livestock. RSVP is not necessary but highly encouraged at Leadership Committee/4-H Leader s/superintendent Meeting 5:30 pm June 19, 2018 I would like ALL leaders and anyone else who assists with the 4-H Show/Fair to attend this meeting. We will be assigning superintendents and other duties for the show week. If you are unable to attend, and would like to put your name down for some duties, please let me know at the office.

8 White County 4-H Newsletter June 2018 ARE YOU UP TO COMPETING IN THE Chef s Challenge? Ever watch those cooking shows on TV? Well, here s the 4-H version the 4-H Food Challenge! Older 4-H ers may compete for cash prizes. Participants/Groups will be given ingredients in which they must prepare a dish in front of a judge. No one will know the ingredients before the contest. Participants/Groups will be given guidelines and be judged on how well they prepare the product. Score sheet Proper use of utensils 10 Proper selection of ingredients 10 Proper method of preparation 30 Cleanliness 10 Proper food safety/sanitation 20 Presentation of final product 20 TOTAL 100 Table Decorating Contest Page 8 Utensils/ingredients will be provided, but members will be expected to set up a finished product display. Contest is open to ANY 4-H er in the following age divisions. Division I AGE (4-H Age as of Sept. 1, 2017) Division II AGE (4-H Age as of Sept. 1, 2017) Registration for Chef s Challenge and Table Decorating will be until July 3 and NO LATER!! RULES 1. Open to any 4-H member or Cloverbud. Participants do not have to be enrolled in a foods project. 2. Teams may consist of one or two youth all in the same age division. Team members do not have to belong to the same 4-H club. 3. Divisions will be: Division I Cloverbuds 8 years old (4-H age as of 9/01/17) Division II Age 9-11 years old (4-H age as of 9/01/17) 4. Members will be given 15 minutes to set up their table display. Members must do the entire setup by themselves; no parental help will be allowed. Supplies should be boxed and placed under the table prior to the contest. 5. Each display should include two place settings based on a theme, color scheme or party plan. The display should also include the menu which will be served at the party. 6. Each display can be no larger than 4 across x 4 deep. No real food is allowed, though you may use plastic food displays, but they are not necessary. 7. The judge will be more interested in your table display. Make sure you put the silverware and glasses in the proper place! 8. The objective of this activity is FUN! No one should get upset about their placing let your kids have fun planning and presenting this activity. 4-H ers may wish to dress for their party. They should plan on discussing their display with the judge. BRING YOUR OWN TABLE OR YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO COMPETE!!! *There will be cash prizes awarded to all winners! Table Decorating & Chef s Challenge will take place during the Food & Clothing Shows on Monday, July 9.

9 White County 4-H Newsletter June 2018 Page 9 Your Day at the Illinois State Fair If you are selected as our county s representative at the State Fair, here s what you need to know: The county office will mail you more information after our local show, as well as an exhibit tag for your project. Remove all the tags and ribbons from our local show. Our county exhibits on August 10, H members should plan to arrive in Springfield at the fairgrounds between 8-9:30 a.m. Then, check the master schedule to see what time YOUR conference judging begins. Everyone will have at least a 10 minute judging time to discuss your project with a judge. Return to your judging area about 10 minutes before your scheduled time. Your project will remain on display until 3:30 that day. Be sure to come back and pick it up before 4:30 p.m. closing time. Come back for the 4-H Clover Celebration at 3 p.m. No projects may be removed from the judging area until 3:30 p.m. It s the rule, so follow it! If you need to leave early, please arrange with someone else from your county to pick up your project. Be sure to give them your claim ticket. There will be lots of other fun things to do in the Orr Building.
