Plan a community service and wear a 4-H t-shirt. Tell your friends about the fun you have in 4-H. Invite your friends to the fair and let them see the fun you have in 4-H Prudential Spirit of Community Awards The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards honor young people in middle level and high school grades for outstanding volunteer service to their communities. Created in 1995 by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the awards constitute the United States' largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteering. Iowa 4-H has been well represented in this program, and each year several state award winners are Iowa 4-H members. 3 4-H Market Beef Weigh-in January 8, 2011 Market steers and market heifers that are exhibited at county fair, state fair, Ak-Sar-Ben, Clay County Fair or other area 4-H events must be weighed and identified. If you are purchasing animals, be sure to ask the producer to fill out a COOL affidavit for your records! When: Saturday, January 8, 2011 (snow date set for Saturday January 15 or January 22) depending on weather Time: 8:30 am Noon Where: Kingsley Livestock Pavilion (The former Bleil and Chapman Auction Barn) Located north of Moville on D-12 Cost: County Only - $1.50 County/State - $5.00 County, State & Ak-Sar-Ben - $ H ers/ffa members in the same family must decide before the animals are weighed, which animal each youth plans to exhibit. After the animal is weighed, no switching is allowed. 4-H ers may weigh six market animals. Animals must be identified as 4-H or FFA, but cannot be identified as both 4-H/FFA. Identification forms (ID Forms) will be available to fill out at the weigh-in. The ID Form may be filled out during weigh-in. Enrollment Information: New for Woodbury County will be one of the pilot counties for 4-H members and volunteers to enroll in 4-H online. This will help 4-H leaders with having an update of members in their clubs and having member information on hand. Training for Extension staff will be held the end of September. As we receive information, we will be passed on that information to your 4-H Leader. 4-H provides many opportunities for youth. With most opportunities whether it s school activities, sports and other youth programs there are fees. 4-H is no exception and to help keep 4-H one of the top youth organizations the enrollment fee has increased to $30. 4-H ers need only to pay the fee once a year and for the one year fee the 4-H er can enroll in a 4-H Club, a specialized club like a cooking club and shooting sports. Fall Volunteer Training for Club Teams of Youth and Adults Woodbury s 4-H Training is schedule for: Thursday, November 4, 7:00 p.m. (location to be determined, somewhere in Moville/County) Saturday, November 6, 9:30 am (location to be determined, somewhere in Sioux City/Sergeant Bluff) Change is in the air and our fall 4-H volunteer training is no exception! The plan for the fall H volunteer training includes adult volunteers teaming up with youth leaders to learn about the new 4-H publication and project material delivery system. Each adult volunteer will be asked to bring at least one youth leader to the training with them. There will be activities that can be used by club leaders and officers at club meetings to help members and families quickly and easily access resources to learn about their projects. This past spring, a team of county youth coordinators and youth program specialists redesigned the project material delivery system to provide new learning adventures for youth, update resources and ways to learn about project areas. While the number of projects has been reduced, the types of learning activities available in each project has broadened and increased. 4-H youth program specialists and student interns have been working throughout the spring and summer to create hot sheets for each project area. The hot sheets are one page documents containing project goals; communication, leadership, citizenship, and exhibit ideas for all ages of youth; record keeping resources and educational resources, including website links for additional information. With the new system, 4-H members can download the hot sheets immediately from the Iowa 4-H website and begin exploring that project area of interest right away. Members without internet access can obtain the hot sheets from their county extension office or from their club leader. This fall there will be more information and a registration form for your club s team to attend the fall H Volunteer Training. From the Foundation... The Woodbury County 4-H Foundation would like to thank all of the clubs who made birdhouses for the silent auction held during the fair. Thank you also to Denise Knaack for donating the afghan and to the Marina Inn for donating a one-night stay in the Ambassador Suite and brunch for two at Kahill s. Thanks as well to the people who bid on the auction items. The total money raised was $1,210 with $510 going back out to the clubs who made the birdhouses. (The money raised from the afghan and Marina Inn suite went entirely to the Foundation.) Participating clubs can expect to receive their check after September 13. $510 went in the Fund the Fun fund. Details on how to apply for Fund the Fun funds coming soon.

4 Helpful Hints for a Successful year! Next year s Woodbury County Fair will be held August 3-7, It s not too early to start planning your goals and preparing for next year s fair. Here is some important information to help you get a good start on the new 4-H year! Attend Club Meetings If you missed a meeting you will be missing important information to help you throughout the 4-H year and for the Fair. Be a part of your club volunteer for committees or help put chairs away and attend activities. If you are an officer it s your responsibility to take that office seriously. Workshops Volunteers and staff work hard to have helpful and fun workshops. These workshops are scheduled throughout the year. Imagine how disappointed we are when only a few 4-H ers show interest or when we have to cancel workshops due to low interest. 4-H Scene Due dates and deadlines are never kept a secret. The due dates and deadlines can be found in the 4-H Scene. The 4-H Scene newsletter is sent to every 4-H family and is also available online. You and your family need to have a system that works for you as a reminder. Woodbury County Fair book Keep this year s fair book as a reference as you set your project goals for next year. The 2011 fair book will be out next May. The 2010 fair book can also be found online at the Woodbury County Fair website at: If you are interested in a project area, thoroughly read the rules and guidelines for that department. If there is a website listed, go to that site and look over the information. Websites The Woodbury County Extension website is: and click on Kids and Teens/4-H or check out the State 4-H Website at: both these sites are extremely helpful. By attending your 4-H meetings, reading the 4-H Scene, reading the fair book, thoroughly reading the rules in the department you will be exhibiting and attending workshops you will have a successful 4-H year! It is up to each club on how they select a member to be on the 4-H Recognition Team. Whoever is chosen MUST attend meetings. The Recognition Team develops new awards & recognition; helps plan the 4-H Recognition Event and other 4-H Events. Both youth and adults work together! The Woodbury 4-H program does have financial assistance for families who need that help. Every child who wants to join 4-H should be able to participate. Special Fee 4-H ers who parents are in the military: Operation: Military Kids is offering to pay the program development fee for any 4-H member whose parent(s) is in the military- includes Guard, Reserve, Active and all service branches.
