2 The first Aberdeen Angus cattle came to Denmark in the fifties. The Association, however, was first founded the 6th of March 1970 and had 12 members. Hans von Folsach took over the farm from his father Gjessinggaard near Randers in Jutland. He imported one bull, two cows and three heifers from Ireland + two heifers from Sweden. These eight Aberdeen Angus were the first beef cattle in Denmark. Through the 47 years there have only been 10 presidents of the Association.

3 The Youth Section Angus Ungdom was started in the year Years before that, the Association had an exchange arrangement for young people especially with Ireland. In Denmark it can be very difficult to get young people interested in the development of the Angus cattle. There are some few but very keen persons, who work hard to make interesting events in the Youth Section Angus Ungdom. Meet them on Facebook In 2016 for example, they took the initiative to visit a private slaughter and to visit a farm.

5 Through the years The Danish Aberdeen Angus Association has been able to publish a journal four times a year. Besides that, the Association also has sent out newsletters etc. In the early years only some few pages written on an old fashion typewriter were sent out but today it is easier and more modern Thanks to Microsoft

6 Jubilee Publications 1995 and 2010 In the year 2003 Denmark was the host of the Technical Meeting and in 2010 Denmark hosted the European Angus Forum.

16 Aalestrup The Performance Test: The performance testing of beef cattle bulls is carried out at Aalestrup Breeding Station, Denmark. The main purpose is to test and identify superior young bulls to be used as herd sires in herds with pure breed and for cross-breeding. Registrations during the Test Period: The test begins when the bull is 7½ months old and ends when the bull is 12 months old. During the test period the bull s body-gain, muscularity and feed conversion is registered. Also possible cases of diseases are registered. Estimated Breeding Values on the Basis of Registrations: Registrations from the performance test are used to calculate estimated breeding values for: Daily gain (T-figure) The heritability: 40 percent Muscularity (U-figure) The heritability: 43 percent Feed conversion (FEF-figure) The heritability: 37 percent The purpose of the performance testing is to determine the bulls estimated breeding values as correct as possible. Consequently, relevant information from related animals is included in the estimated breeding values in question. - The bulls are fed with a complete ration. The feed intake is recorded during the entire test. - The temper and behavior of the bulls are registered.

17 Shows in Denmark The two biggest shows in Denmark are in Roskilde near Copenhagen and in Herning in Jutland. In 2017 The National Show was in Roskilde. Next year it will be in Herning. There are several shows around in the country during the summer but unfortunately Aberdeen Angus is not represented at them all. Thanks to some very keen breeders the Aberdeen Angus cattle has won a lot of Interbreed prices. In fact Aberdeen Angus takes a greater part of the Interbreed victories than Angus numerically should be entitled to. Rønnekilde Unik was one of the pricewinners.

19 Dansk Angus Kød (Danish Angus Beef) The Danish Angus Beef (Dansk Angus Kød) is a trademark owned by the Danish Aberdeen Angus Association. That is, it belongs to the members. The members of Dansk Angus Kød are paid 5,- DDK/kg (0,65 Euro) more than the slaughterhouse listing price. Our members have since March 2016 to March 2017 received approximately 1.4 million DDK ( EURO) extra for animals which have the quality that is demanded. The aim for the period was to find and slaughter 800 animals. This we achieved with success for the period March 2016 to March 2017.

20 Dansk Angus Kød (Danish Angus Beef) Claims to obtain the additional price: 1. Feeding: Cows, heifers and calves are on pasture during the summer period. Young bulls can be completed in the stable. In winter, fed mainly with grassland products and other roughage. 2. The animals must be free range all the year. 3. The animals in the stable must have access to a dry area. 4. The animals are at least 75% Angus in the pedigree. 5. The calf should go with the mother for at least 6 months. 6. To ensure a good dining experience, the animals must have a finished carcass. 7. For reasons of animal welfare and to ensure the best possible dining experience, there is a requirement for gentle delivery and transport. 8. There is a requirement for optimal ageing in the slaughterhouse. You have to be a member of the Danish Aberdeen Angus Association

21 Dansk Angus Kød (Danish Angus Beef) A group of members of the association is engaged in selecting animals for slaughtering and managing payouts. This group have put a lot of voluntary and unpaid work for the benefit of our members. All our members benefit from Dansk Angus Kød, whether they are producing animals for breeding or for slaughtering. All Angus breeders receive higher prices for breeding animals. We work together with Danish Crown KødGrossisten and Scandic Hotels all over Denmark.

22 It might be the headline for the success of Danish Aberdeen Angus. Our high veterinary status makes it attractive for other Angus breeders, mostly from Europe, to buy Angus livestock in Denmark. The Danish Aberdeen Angus Association`s agreement with the meat wholesaler has a major impact on the access of new members to the Association. The price of registered Angus livestock has increased over the past year. Danish Aberdeen Angus Association predicts that the development will continue in a positive direction for many years, based on consumers` desire for high quality meat and the increased interest in the purchase of livestock from Denmark, due to our high veterinary status. We will continue to focus on the breeding, in order to maintain the qualities that Aberdeen Angus is known for. Wanted DEAD or ALIVE

23 The Future There is no doubt that the Aberdeen Angus is an all-round breed. The cow s ability to give birth to a living calf, the ability to graze areas where nature preservation is wanted and besides this Aberdeen Angus provides us with exceptional meat. All these qualities make the Aberdeen Angus cow very popular. We want to maintain these qualities through the breeding. Two years ago, the breeding committee made a plan for the breed in Denmark. It shows our strong commitment to maintain the qualities the Aberdeen Angus breed is known for. We will continue to develop the trademark: Dansk Angus Kød

Denmark as we Danes conceive it is so big you won t believe it. Why not let us compromise about Denmark s prober size, which will truly please us all, since it s greater than it s small.
