If you, or someone you know is interested, contact Dusty Henningfeld, or dhenningfeld@scotforge. com. Views From Angus Leaders Andy Mindemann, President, Wisconsin Angus Association Greetings! Fellow Angus Breeders, As summer winds down, there are a lot of exciting things going on throughout our state and in our association. Everyone is gearing up for fall sales whether you are hosting one, selling animals privately or looking to buy, it is a great time to take advantage of the opportunities the Angus breed presents. The 20th Anniversary of the World Beef Expo is this year and it will During the fifth-annual Beef Leaders Institute (BLI), Andy Mindemann, Oconomowoc, was able to experience all aspects of the beef industry from feedlot to retailer. Mindemann joined a group of 20 Angus enthusiasts from 11 states who participated in this year s BLI, held June by the American Angus Association. The goal of the four-day institute is to provide young producers, between the ages of 25 and 45, the opportunity to network with peers in the breed, while learning more about the Association and the entire beef industry. This is a unique opportunity to see a variety of aspects of the beef industry, Mindemann says. It s helped me see ways that I can help the industry as a whole, provide high quality beef to consumers and address consumer concerns. Made possible by funds from the Angus Foundation, BLI participants began their experience with an in-depth tour of the Association headquarters in Saint Joseph, Mo. While there, they heard about the variety of ways the Association works for its nearly 30,000 members. Mindemann also took part in the Master s of Beef Advocacy program, organized by the National Cattlemen s Beef Association (NCBA). A commencement was held before the group began their two-day tour across three states. The BLI class learned to apply advocacy skills from Daren Williams, NCBA executive director of communications, during the MBA commencement in again be an ROV Show. Having this event in our own state is a great asset for us and I encourage everyone to get down to State Fair Park during the show, September One of the highlights of my summer was attending Beef Leaders Institute (BLI) hosted by the American Angus Association in June. This was a very educational and insightful four days and I encourage anyone who is to look into. I ll be going into more detail during the Annual Meeting but feel free to ask me questions about BLI if you re interested. Fall is in the air so I wish everyone a safe and productive harvest! Andy Wisconsin Represented in 2012 Beef Leaders Institute Saint Joseph, Mo. Throughout BLI travels, they visited Gregory Feedlot, Tabor, Iowa; Tyson, beef processing plant, Dakota City, Neb.; Whole Foods Market, grocery store, Omaha, Neb.; Cargill Meat Solutions, value-added processing plant, Nebraska City, Neb.; and Sysco, food distributor, Lincoln, Neb. Beef Tent Was A Popular Stop At The Farm Technology Days The 2012 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days in Outagamie County was considered very successful based on feedback received from many exhibitors and show visitors. Attendance for the three day show was estimated to be just under 40,000. A special thank you goes to Heags Angus for supplying an Angus heifer in the beef tent at Farm Technology Days, and Dale s family who helped managed the Wisconsin Angus Association booth this year. Over 25 percent of attendees look for beef related information, most with farms of less than 100 acres. As this show closes, the plans for the 2013 Farm Technology Days are moving rapidly. The hosts for the July 9-11 event are Alex and Mary Olson, owners of Breezy Hill Dairy, located near Dallas in southern Barron County. We anticipate a successful event and look forward to hearing from members who are interested in helping with the 2013 Wisconsin Angus Association booth. If you wish to do so, please contact Dale Heagle at (920) for additional information. 2 Fall 2012 Wisconsin Angus News

9 Hawthorne Sisters Excels At Wisconsin State Fair continued from page one Owned heifer in the Junior show. Allison and her sister Claire are actively involved in the breeding decisions and herd health activities of the family s 40 cow herd of registered Angus, in addition to preparing and competing in the showring. These past two years mom and I have done less and let the girls take more of the initiative on their own, said dad, Jim Hawthorne. The girls work very hard on their calves all year round and it is a thrill to see them working together and to be able to compete with some of the best Angus breeders in the state and country. When asked what was the best part of the State Fair participation the girls agree being rewarded as breeders of their own cattle and getting to see the many different friends they have made across the State showing cattle. Several Angus breeders and businesses from around Wisconsin pooled to support the sale, making the Champion Angus Steer the highest selling Breed Champion of the evening. When a junior breeder can bring his own animal to Champion status, it says a lot for the person and their family, said Len Bayer of Country Fresh Meats. A Bred and Owned is truly where it s at. A sentiment expressed by many of the buyers. The buyers consortium included Ag Consulting & Products LLC, Viroqua; Alton Embryo Service, Reedsburg; Badger Pork, Reedsburg; Keith Berres, Milwaukee; County Side Vet, Reedsburg; Country Fresh Meats, Weston; Fernvale Angus, Mineral Point; GABBEI Meats, Barneveld, Gaffney Family Cattle, Barneveld; Mindemann Farms, Sullivan; Walmart, Milwaukee; and Windy Hill Angus, Marengo, IL. There will be great food, meat raffles, silent auction, and live music, September 27, at Wisconsin State Fair Park, Saz s pavilion.
