3 Mill Coulee Angus Is Honored As A Historic Herd The Historic Angus Herd Award is presented to Angus breeders or immediate families who have been in continuous production of registered Angus cattle for 50 years or more. The American Angus Association is honored to recognize Mill Coulee Angus, Praire du Chien, Wis., as a Historic Angus Herd. The Mill Coulee Angus farm dates back to 1959 and continues to raise performance Angus cattle on the banks of the Mississippi river, just north of Prairie du Chien. The late Bernard Pedretti, his wife, Darlene, and 11 children founded the ranch by purchasing the Frank Ahrens and Brothers herd. The initial purchase also included a bull from Lisle Blackburns, Cassville, Wis., and foundation female Deal of ElJon. In 1980, the family expanded their operation by acquiring the D.P. Richards herd. That investment played a key role in the development of Mill Coulee Angus genetics. Today, half of the Mill Coulee cows are descendants of a Richard s herd cow Barbara Kindness. The daughter of Emulous 7067 spent 18 years in the Pedretti herd before she was sold. Mill Coulee Angus has always focused on performance testing, which stems from Bernard Pedretti s involvement at the bull testing Hancock Station in central Wisconsin. During his involvement, he tested bulls in five different states Indiana, Montana, Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin producing top gaining 2013 Wisconsin Angus Breeders Futurity NEW SALE LOCATION! bulls in four out of the five states. Angus Breeders Recognized For Achievements Each year the Wisconsin Angus Association recognizes members who take the time and expense to present Angus cattle to the public in a positive way, both at fairs and test stations The show recognition program works on a point system for exhibitors in four state shows: SW Angus Show, WAA Spring Preview Show, Wisconsin State Fair Angus Show, and World Beef Expo Angus Show. As an advertising tool, the exhibitor puts his best foot forward in presenting his cattle and operation to the public. The benefits extend beyond the owner, to WAA members, purebred and commercial Angus breeders and the Angus breed itself. The importance of testing bulls was stressed by Lee Leachmann as he spoke to the cattleman s conference this winter. He told of how the beef industry has fallen behind the pork and poultry business in efficiency and carcass merits. The good news is that we are doing something about it. We are sorting for genetics through our test stations that measure average daily gains and efficiency in pounds of feed per pound of gain or pounds of gain on given amount of feed. The other part of the good news is that these traits are highly inheritable. Saint Croix Valley Bull test will have about 70 bulls from 40 consigners. The bulls are on test for 140 days. Bulls are weighed every 28 days. Average daily rate of gains vary from under 3 to nearly 5 pounds per day. Plattville will be similar in ratios and the rates will be higher due to difference in the feed ration. Plattville Bull Test Station Winner for 2012: Larry Slager of Polo, IL. 12 Angus Youth from Wiscoonsin and Illinois enjoyed a visit to Miller Park as part of the WJAA Mini LEAD Conference. Country Lane Farm and S & R Angus 16 th Annual Angus Production Sale Saturday, May 18, 2013 noon - lunch 1:00 pm - Sale at S&R Angus Selling: 20 Breeding Age Bulls 10 Open Heifers 8 Cow/Calf Pairs WJAA Mini LEAD Conference Attracts Twenty Plus Youth Continued From Page 1 to fifty dollars. We had a really good turn out as there were about twenty juniors who came, four of whom were not part of our association. One of the four is a member of the Illinois Angus Association, lives on the border of Wisconsin and Illinois, and became a member of our association. Friday night we played ice breaker games and ate pizza in the hotel with Kelli Retallick and Jennifer Ewing, National Junior Angus Association Board of Directors. We spent the rest of the evening in the water park. Saturday we ate breakfast at the hotel and then began our journey to Sprechers Brewery during which we toured, tasted, and learned how they made their sodas. For the next step of the day we headed over to Miller Park and ate at TGI Fridays for lunch and then toured the Brewers Stadium. We went behind the scenes to the dugouts, locker rooms, and walked around the baseball field. We could not walk on the field as the grass was still dormant, but we got to pet the grass! Then we visited the Henderson family farm where we listened to speakers and had an amazing supper. Sunday morning we played more games with Kelli and listened while she talked about the silver, bronze, and gold awards. After that we split up and Kelli talked to the younger kids about the competitions at the National Junior Angus Show and the older kids talked to Keri Retallick and Leah Mindemann about scholarships. Over all we had a really good turnout for our Mini LEAD Conference. It was a great experience for all as each of us made new friends and even old friendships that will continue to grow and last us all a life time. I would like thank all of the participants in the Mini LEAD for attending. I would also like to thank Becky Henderson, Keri Retallick, Jessica Radcliffe, and Kelli Retallick as they have put so much effort into having this Mini LEAD Conference become successful! We could not have pulled this conference off without all of them.
