3 CHOCTAW COUNTY 4-H PROGRAM 4-H is an organization of boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 19. Youth can be enrolled and participate in 4-H in a variety of ways: in-school clubs, after school clubs, community clubs, special interest clubs, home school clubs, or as an individual member. In 4-H clubs, members elect officers and conduct business meetings. Clubs have a local sponsor called a local leader or a volunteer leader. This person may be a teacher, parent, or a person who is interested in working with young people. This is the key in the local club. Local awards are presented during the club meeting. Those who are winners are eligible to compete in county awards programs. Some of these county winners compete in regional and state programs. These programs are under the supervision of the County Extension Coordinator and Regional 4-H Agent. The 4-H Clubs are a part of the United States Department of Agriculture Extension System. The Land Grant University provides supervision in each state for the Cooperative Extension System. Alabama A&M University, Auburn University, and Tuskegee University are working together in Alabama to reach youth of 4-H age and their families. The Choctaw County Extension System has people working with 4-H youth development, family programs, agriculture, horticulture, etc. The following people are a part of the county staff David Perry, 4-H Foundation Regional Extension Agent John P. 4 General Guidelines The Choctaw County 4-H program is open equally to all young people between the ages of 9 and 19 without regard to race, religion, color, national origin, sex, or handicap. When appropriate the awards are carried out in four age divisions: Junior 4-H Awards: Level l ages 9-11 (by Jan. 1) Level II ages (by Jan. 1) Senior 4-H Awards: Level l ages (by Jan. 1) Level II ages 16 & older (by Jan.1) To enter local and county events, the youth must be a current active 4-H er with an enrollment sheet on file in the county office. Participants in local and/or county events must follow the guidelines as provided for the events. Participants in local and/or county events must accept responsibility for their actions and behavior related to that event. A code of conduct must be signed and adhered to by each 4-H er. All decisions concerning events are the responsibility of the County Extension Staff. Input from local volunteer leaders and parents is encouraged.

5 PROCEDURE FOR A 4-H CLUB MEETING Pesident Says: Will the meeting please come to order. Let us stand and pledge allegiance to the American Flag and say our 4-H Pledge, led by our Vice President. The secretary will please call the roll. The secretary will read the minutes of our last meeting. Are there any corrections or additions to the minutes? If not, they stand approved as read. Is there any unfinished business? Is there any new business? We will now stand to sing songs and/or show and tell. The program for today is. Are there any announcements? Do I hear a motion that we stand adjourned? (One member stands and makes the motion: I move we adjourn. ) Do I hear a second? (Another member stands and says: I second the motion. ) All in favor say Aye, opposed, No. The meeting stands adjourned until next month.

7 Learn the 4-H Pledge and practice the 4-H motto. Have a good project. The basis of a good 4-H program is good projects. Get a project you enjoy and can take pride in. For more information on your project, try Ask your parents for help in 4-H activities. You will be surprised how willing they are to help when they are asked. Attend all meetings-----this includes local meetings, county meetings, and special meetings. Take part in a lot of activities. It s a lot of fun to make something and exhibit your product. Try it once and you will want to again. Share experiences with other 4-H ers. Help younger boys and girls just starting in 4-H. Many 4-H'ers say they wish they had started younger. Encourage brothers and sisters, as well as other young 4-H ers. Don t be discouraged. It s easy to get discouraged when you don t win what you enter. Please keep trying. You can learn from every experience. You will win if you enter enough different things. Junior Achievement Awards can be applied for in five areas. These areas include: Animals, Family & Consumer Science, Arts & Communication, Science & Technology and Natural Resources & Environmental Science. 10 4-H Handbook Cover design Here is your chance to show off your creative ideas. Choctaw County 4-H ers have a chance to create a design to be used as the cover for next year s 4-H Handbook. Here are the rules: Design a cover about 4-H. Use your own ideas for colors and pictures. Do not use any copyrighted characters.
