County Awards & Record Books The Mahaska County 4-H Award Applications are now available at mahaska/page/4-h-fair-award-forms and are due by Friday, September 15, 2017 at 4:30 PM. Any 4-H member may apply for 4-H awards as long as they meet the minimum criteria for the award in which they are applying. Record Books must be completed in order to apply for county 4-H awards. We will hold a 4-H Record Book & Award Application Workshop on Thursday, August 31 from 6:00-7:00 PM in the Extension office Auditorium. RSVP is required by Tuesday, August 29. We must have at least 5 RSVPs in to hold this workshop. RSVP by calling or ing vermeera@iastate.edu. Are you an adult who would like to honor a Mahaska County 4-H member? You can nominate 4-H ers for the Make a Difference Award. More details about this award and others can be found on page 4 of this newsletter.

2 FIRST LEGO League (FLL) If you will be in 4th-6th grade this fall, you should check out FIRST LEGO League! FLL members use LEGO pieces to build a challenge course for their robot to complete. They learn about using LEGO Mindstorms robotics programming, teamwork, communication, and leadership. We will have four teams this year. FLL teams will meet from early September- December or January. If you are interested in joining a team, please contact Amy Brainard at or vermeera@iastate.edu to be added to the interested list. Team registration will be available on September 1st. Clover Kids Enrollment Clover Kids are on their yearly break. Clover Kids meetings will start up in October. Clover Kids is for any child in Kindergarten- 3rd Grade. Cost to join Clover Kids is $25 for the year and includes a t-shirt, monthly activities, and snacks. We have Clover Kids groups that meet at the following locations each month from October-May: Extension office Eddyville Elementary Fremont School North Mahaska Elementary Go-Getters at Truax County Shop Meeting times and dates will be announced in the September 4-H Newsletter. If you would like more information about Clover Kids, please contact the Extension office at or xmahaska@iastate.edu. LEADERS NEEDED: We are in need of Adult and Teen Leaders for the Clover Kids groups. If you are interested in volunteering with any of the groups listed above, please contact Codi at the number or above. All adult volunteers must complete and pass a background screening. Make A Difference Award Nomination Mahaska County Make A Difference Award This award recognizes youth who demonstrated good character in an effort to enhance 4-H at either a club or county-level. Criteria: Members must demonstrate excellence in the character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. They use these skills to enhance the 4-H program in their club and/or county. Nominating Person(s): I feel that (please print) has met or exceeded all of the written criteria for the Mahaska County Make A Difference Award. I specifically feel that this 4-H member shows excellent traits of Adult s Signature Adults Printed Name Any adult may nominate a 4-H member, including 4-H Leaders and/or Parents/Guardians. This nomination form is due to the Extension office no later than September 15,

3 Herdsmanship Contest Results Part of a 4-H or FFA member s responsibilities during the fair is to take care of their animal(s) and to keep their club s area in the barns clean. Herdsmanship is a team effort. All-in-all, the exhibitors did a fantastic job again this year. Members were judged once per day, except on their checkin and show days. The top clubs listed below will receive a special premium on their club s premium check. The top individuals listed below may stop by the Extension office to pick up a trophy and have their photo taken for the newspaper. Ak-Sar-Ben Stock Show Entries Anyone planning to exhibit livestock at the 2017 AKSARBEN Stock Show in Omaha in September needs to complete their online registration before August 10. AKSARBEN information can be found at events/376. If you have questions, please call or Amy PRIOR to August 10, as Amy starts vacation on that date ext. 28 or vermeera@iastate.edu. Superintendent Meeting We will hold a county-wide Superintendent meeting on Thursday, September 28 at 7:00 PM in the Auditorium at the Extension office. We will review the 2017 Southern Iowa Fair, Rules/Regulations, Workshops/Clinics, and scheduling details. We will set individual planning meetings for superintendents during this meeting, if necessary. Individual planning meetings will be held throughout the month of October. We will focus on specific rules/regulations, the fair rule booklet, finding fair judges, and setting the fair show schedules, as well as planning any potential workshops/clinics for the H Year. If you are planning to attend the September 28 meeting, please call Amy at or vermeera@iastate.edu. Correspondence Preferences Please be sure to have all of your contact information updated in 4hOnline. Families (including members and volunteers), please log into 4hOnline to update your family s correspondence. After you log in to your family account, please click the Edit Family button within the gray rectangular box. 4 County 4-H Award Opportunities The H Award Applications include the following: Project Award Application - Any 4-H er is eligible for a Project Award if the project has been enrolled in via 4hOnline and completed for the current 4-H year (Sept. 16-Sept. 17). (Record books are not needed by Extension office for project awards) Special Awards - Any 4-H er who has enrolled in a project via 4hOnline and completed a project in any of the following areas may apply for a special award (Record books must be turned in with Special Award applications). Special Award areas are: Beef, Horse, Sheep, Swine, Rabbit, Horticulture, Dog, Meat Goat, Poultry, Dairy, Photography, *Communications, *Llama, & Longtime Record Keeping *NEW in 2017! Outstanding Recognition Awards (must turn in a record book with applications) Outstanding Junior/Intermediate/Senior 4-H er - Any 4-H er with outstanding 4-H leadership, experiences and projects is eligible. Through whatever record keeping system a 4-H member chooses, it should reflect goals, accomplishments, what was learned, and future plans. If you would like to keep your records in a green 4-H record book cover, those are available at MCEO for $5.00 each. We also have an electronic format available that can be given out on a CD. The electronic format is a PowerPoint document. A NEW Record Book option is the 4HOnline Record Book. It is still under development, but using this service will help to make the end product better for Iowa 4-H ers now and in the future. The 4HOnline Record Book can be accessed at: You will find the area for Iowa 4-H Youth Development and click Sign in, then log in using your 4hOnline credentials. A Help Sheet has been created to walk you through the online record book process. Contact Amy to have the Help Sheet ed or mailed to you. 6 Post-Fair Information Premium Checks will be mailed to the club leaders in August. Thank you to everyone who has already turned in their database! Auction Checks will be mailed soon. If you have any questions about your auction check, please call the Fair Board Office at , 4-H is not responsible for the auction. Hog Checks for pigs sold on the truck during the fair will be mailed as soon as the check is received. Thank You Notes ALL 4-H & FFA members who participated in the Southern Iowa Fair should send a thank you to the Southern Iowa Fair Board at 615 North I Street in Oskaloosa, IA A lot of hard work goes into preparing for and holding the fair. Don t forget to thank Key Coop and the MCARD/Mahaska Farm Bureau for sponsoring two different BBQs. If you enjoyed a plate of pancakes on Wednesday of the fair, then you have the Oskaloosa FS to thank. All beef exhibitors should send a thank-you to the Mahaska County Cattlemen s Association for the free burger during the beef show. If you enjoyed a free meal during the Swine Show, please send a thank -you to Channel Seed attn.: Clint Long. DON T FORGET about thanking donors. Each club and FFA chapter will receive a letter very soon explaining the process for thanking our donors, along with the name of the person/ business to send a thank-you to. Applications are available at the MCEO & online. 4-H ers on Teen Council must be in 8th-12th grade, fill out and turn in a short application form, and must complete a brief group interview with 4-H Staff. Responsibilities of Teen Council members include the following: - Attending meetings throughout the year - Planning and helping with county-wide events - Serving on committees for special events & weigh-ins - Assisting at the Southern Iowa Fair Attendance and participation are very important. The focus is for youth to meet goals, develop leadership skills, and have the most fun they can! Applications can be found on our website and at the Extension office. If you re interested and would like to learn more, please talk with a current member or call the Extension office. Applications must be completed by current 2017 members and anyone interested in joining. State Fair Exhibit Information All State Fair Exhibits (selected at county fair) must be turned in to the Extension office no later than 4:30 PM on Friday, August 4 (with the exception of food items, which must be in by NOON on Tuesday, August 8). All exhibits must be checked in at the Iowa State Fair 4-H Exhibits Building by 2:45 PM (Table 7) on Tuesday, August 8. Kristi Roose has volunteered to bring exhibits to the State Fair (except for those who have already made arrangements) and the 4-H staff will bring exhibits home from the fair on Monday, August 21 (except for those that were taken up on their own, or other arrangements were made before state fair). Please note that food items are rotated during the fair, so you may want to check before heading to Des Moines. Workshops for the new 4-H Year Is there a particular topic you d like us to offer a workshop in for the new 4-H year? If so, please let Amy know by calling or ing vermeera@iastate.edu. Is there a particular workshop topic in which you d like to teach or know someone who would like to be the presenter? If so, please let Amy know.
