2 Rules for the SPRING 007 Sale This is the 69th All-Breed Performance Tested Bull Sale held in Southwest Missouri. Commercial and purebred buyers will have ndividual performance data available, along with pedigree, to select a prospective herd sire. The rules for the sale were developed by the Southwest Missouri Beef Cattle Improvement Association. Required Performance and Conformation Information A. The bulls must be produced in a Registered herd that is enrolled in the Missouri On-Farm Performance Testing Program and their respective breed association records program. Bulls may also qualify by being tested at an approved test station under university supervision. B. The bulls eligible for the 007 Spring Sale must have been calved from May 1, 005 through February, 006. C. All calves in the herd eligible for registry must have been weighed at weaning for that season. (Herd definition: All cattle on a given farm and handled as a separate unit.) D. The bull calves nominated must be weighed at weaning (between 160 and 80 days of age.) They must have a 365-day weight ratio of 95% or more. If 10 or more male calves are sired by a given sire, they may be used for the season male average. The steers will be adjusted upward 5% to a bull equivalent to determine average weaning weight of male calves. (A steer is any calf castrated when weaning weights are taken.) A first time consignor may consign a bull, tested at an approved test station, to one sale, even though his entire herd was not tested. E. The bull s yearling weight must be taken at the associations recommended time (30 to 0 days for most breeds). He must have a 365 day weight of 1100 pounds or better and measure 9 or better at the hip. F. All weighings must be supervised by the Regional Livestock Specialist or authorized personnel. G. Age of dam adjustments will follow the breed associations guidelines. H. If the bull has been in service prior to the sale, this will be announced from the Auction block.. Bulls to be eligible for this sale will have to be owned as a cow-calf unit prior to the time the calf is 10 days of age. Exceptions to this rule, partnership cattle, leased herds, etc., will be determined by the sale committee prior to consignment. J. All bulls must be semen tested and examined for breeding soundness by a veterinarian within 90 days of sale, using standard assay analysis of semen approved by the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Missouri. The evaluation committee will rule on major visual soundness defects on each bull at the sale. Bulls with soundness defects will not be sold. K. All bulls must be at the sale location by 9:00 A.M. the day of the sale. L. All bulls will be evaluated and given a 1 to 10 soundness score beginning at 9:30 A.M. sale day. Scrotal circumference as taken by the producer s veterinarian during the breeding soundness exam will be reported sale day. M. Information not available at press time, will be available sale day on supplement sheet.. 4 Expected progeny differences ( s) provide the best means of comparing genetic merit of animals within the breed. For each trait evaluated, the incorporates the animal s individual and progeny performance with progeny performance information from other relatives. By utilizing national sire evaluation information, the evaluation also utilizes information from related traits and accounts, in part, or differences in the genetic merit of herdmates as well as genetic trends within the breed. Each trait evaluation predicts expected progeny performance relative to a fixed breed average - hence the term Expected Progeny Difference. The key word is difference. The itself does not imply good or bad performance, only whether he performance of progeny is expected to be above or below that of another individual in that breed. s are given as + or -, in this catalog. If neither a + or - is shown, that amount will be a +. Breeders should, on an individual basis, decide what is best for them by considering what traits are important to their program, their current herd performance, and the degree of change desired. Percentile Rank - As the percentile moves toward 1, it ndicates smaller birth weight s and larger weaning, yearling and milk s. Accuracy - Refers to the reliability of an. The closer o 1 the more reliable it is with less change likely. PE refers to pedigree estimate which averages the sire and dam. BKS refers to backsolution used to obtain breeding values of non-parents by back-solving from the predicted parental breeding value. Birth Weight - The expected difference in average birth weight (lbs) of progeny. Birth weight reflects prenatal growth potential and may also be used as an indicator of calving ease. Maternal Milk - The expected difference in average weaning weight (lbs) of daughter s calves which is attributed to milking ability. This evaluation is obtained by subtracting 1/ of the Weaning Weight (the direct effect on growth) from the Maternal Weaning Weight. Weaning Weight - The expected difference in average weaning weight of calves. The evaluation reflects the genetic influence on pre-weaning growth rate. Yearling Weight - The expected difference in average yearling weight of progeny. It reflects genetic influence on both pre-weaning and post-weaning growth rate. Calving Ease - This is the difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. Angus - ($Wean) Considers these impact areas: birth weight, weaning weight, maternal milk and mature cow size. ($Beef) Considers feedlot and carcass merit. Charolais - Terminal Sire Profitability Index (TPI) Weights S of growth and carcass traits. Does not consider profitability when heifers are retained. Gelbvieh - Grid Merit (GM) Based on quality grade, yield grade and weight specifications. Feedlot Merit (FM) Based on expected gain and feedlot efficiency. Simmental - All-Purpose Index (API) Considers when bulls are bred to both first-calf heifers and mature cows with a portion of the heifers kept for replacements and the balance of the heifers and steers retained to harvest weight. Terminal Sire (TS) Evaluates the economic value when mated to mature cows and all calves are finished for harvest. Limousin - Mainstream Terminal Index ($MTI). Ranks animals in terms of profit per carcass from weaning to yield grades 1 and and Select to Low-Choice quality grades. Hereford - Baldy Maternal Index (BMI$). A maternally focused index. It is critical of calving ease, has positive weight on weaning weight and a slightly negative weight on yearling weight. The emphasis on intramuscular fat is greater than on ribeye area. Certified Hereford Beef Index (CHB$). A terminal sire index with some pressure on calving ease but more weight on weaning and yearling weight and significant weight on both ribeye and intramuscular fat. SOUNDNESS SCORING Hoof and soundness scoring is not an exact science, but in order to place a subjective score on these bulls for your consideration, a committee evaluates them at the sale considering hooves, joint angularity and movement. A scale of 1 to 10 is used with 1 being essentially unsound and 10 perfect. Keep in mind that perfection is seldom attained. Conditions that might be encountered and relative scoring is given below. 10 Perfect or near perfect in hoof size, toe shape, joint angles and 9 movement. No blemishes. 8 Bulls would be considered basically sound. Good foot shape, 7 even toes, good heel depth, correct slope to pasterns, legs and 6 shoulders. 5 Bulls in this range have acceptable soundness with no serious problems. Would include mild toe unevenness, slight rolling of toes, moderate heel depth, some possible toe growth and only slightly excessive angle or straightness to shoulder, hock and pasterns. 3 One or more serious faults that impair their movement and expected longevity. Includes excessive toe growth, spread 1 toes, hooves that roll under, corns, uneven toes, cracked hooves, too little or too much angle to shoulder, hock and/or pastern resulting in short or long strides. Possible swollen joints. 0 5
