opening/ greetings Welcoming address from Åke Jacobson, President of the International Orienteering Federation World Masters Orienteering Championships 2011 A Welcoming address from the President of the International Orienteering Federation It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 2011 World Masters Orienteering Championships in Hungary and the UNESCO World Heritage city of Pécs. It is particularly pleasing to note that the event this year, when the IOF celebrates its 50th anniversary, is truly global with participants from all six IOF regions. I cannot imagine a more appropriate tribute to a place having as its motto: The Borderless City! This is the first time that the World Masters Orienteering Championships (WMOC) are organised in Hungary, one of the 10 founding member countries of the IOF in With close to 4,000 competitors, the WMOC continues to attract large numbers of masters from around the world, making it without doubt the biggest Championship event in international orienteering. It shows that orienteering truly is a lifelong sport. The venue chosen for the event, Pécs, on the slopes of the Mecsek Mountains, will give a unique cultural experience along with a beautiful natural environment and challenging competitions. The WMOC will be a rewarding and memorable social, cultural and sporting occasion; a worthy World Masters Orienteering Championships in the fullest sense. I sincerely thank the Hungarian Orienteering Federation and the organisers and I wish all competitors success in the competitions. International Orienteering Federation Åke Jacobson President International Orienteering Federation Welcome from Miklós Juhász, President of the Hungarian Orienteering Federation Dear Orienteering Friends, It is a great honor for Hungary to host another orienteering world championship after the highly acclaimed WOC 2009 in Miskolc. Hungary was among the founders of the IOF, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. We have all come a long way since then. Hungarian Orienteering has organized the pinnacle event of the sport, the World Orienteering Championships twice in

in Zalaegerszeg and in 2009 in Miskolc and has also proved its capacity to host several other IOF events. This is our second chance to welcome the world s best senior orienteers The predecessor of WMOC, the Veteran World Cup, was held in Körmend way back in I am confident that the 2011 World Masters Orienteering Championships in Pécs will satisfy even the perfectionists fighting for podium results by providing the best terrain, maps, courses, and clockwork-like organization inspired by our Swiss friends during last year s WMOC. But for the renaissance persons among you and for all of you, dare I say this WMOC will offer much more than that. The joy of the Mecsek Mountain s par excellence karst terrain and beautiful forests will be further enriched by après-orienteering experiences. The beautiful city of Pécs, with its warm hospitality, relaxed atmosphere, vibrant culture and rich historical heritage, makes a one-of-a-kind events centre. Restaurants ranging in speciality from traditional Hungarian dishes to international fine cuisine await you. The wine regions of Villány and Szekszárd are excellent destinations, the wonderful wines speak for themselves. For those of you who are able to stay in Hungary a little longer, visiting Lake Balaton, sailing, or just sunbathing at the beach could be another highlight of your summer holidays. In general, I am confident that you won t regret spending some more of your summer in our beautiful and friendly country, discovering our spas, taking a bicycle tour through the countryside, or spending a few days in Budapest the possibilities are endless. I wish all of you enjoyable competitions and a pleasant, memorable stay in Pécs! 2 Miklós Juhász President of the Hungarian Orienteering Federation Welcome from Sarolta Monspart, World Orienteering Champion Dear Senior Orienteer, Welcome to the 2011 World Masters Orienteering Championships in Pécs! The team of organizers is pleased to have each and every participant in this year s race. It is much better to work more for more participants than the other way around. We all tried to prepare the entire competition thus to make preparation and participation worth a while. Moreover, to give you a chance to meet your fellow international competitors and old sports friends with an open mind on the Championship; and to explore the sights of Pécs, European Capital of Culture 2010, as sports tourists. Every competition is a festive occasion; this is when, after days and weeks of hard training, sportsmen and women meet to compare their skills. This July, we will be celebrating on a truly remarkable occasion; with old friends and great rivals competing to see who is the best between scratch line and home stretch in the woods on the World Masters Orienteering Championship in Pécs. Perhaps you already have participated in a competition here in the surroundings of Pécs, in the Mecsek, some 10 or 40 years ago; and perhaps you can still recall the terrain with its wild garlic fields and sinkholes, its relatively good runnability and the typically hilly surface. Probably the racing area has not changed as much as the racers themselves. Even though the number of years elapsed is the same in both cases; luckily, the forest does not develop grey hair and an increasing Body-Mass-Index, neither does it lose patience unlike today s master orienteer who, besides their beloved running trainings, are growing

more and more sensitive towards the increasing challenges of our globalised world. Yet, nevertheless, they have registered - they participate - and soon they will cross the finish line. It was the right decision, congratulations! Wishing you a good race, a memorable time, and a pleasant holiday after the Championship, your Welcome from Dr Zsolt Páva, Mayor of Pécs Ladies and Gentlemen, dear sports fans! Sarolta Monspart In the name of the Pécs City Assembly, please allow me to say a warm welcome to the participants of World Masters Orienteering Championships! Walter Wintle, an American poet who lived at the beginning of the last century, had put the power of human will, enthusiasm and faith into words as follows: Life s battles don t always go / To the stronger or faster man; / But soon or late the man who wins / Is the one who thinks he can. Pécs, a city with rich sports history, offers an excellent opportunity to experience this power in the course of this year s competition. Due to its historic, cultural, architectural and natural heritage, Pécs is one of the most exciting locations in Hungary. The multicultural city s intellectual life, its openness towards the new and towards other nations values is considered exemplary in the region. Furthermore, Pécs is proud of its sports culture s remarkable past, rich present and promising future. Please feel free to discover the unique sights of this 2000-year-old city, the beauties and the distinctive flair of Pécs. I believe that, besides the glory of the race, you will bring back plenty of pleasant memories from the Mecsek with you. Welcome from Zoltán Horváth, President of Baranya County Council Dr. Zsolt Páva Mayor of Pécs Welcome The World Masters Orienteering Championships occupy a special place in the international sporting calendar due to the large number of participants who represent a wide range of nationalities and age-groups. It is an honour that this year our county has been given the right to host this noble competition. A competition that is more than just a race, as it draws the attention of us all to the importance of the environment and to the beauties of sport and nature. It gives me great pleasure that as the official patron of the event I can join you in fostering our common values, in demonstrating that individual accomplishment and the prosperity of our community are vital to one another. You, the competitors, the 35 and the 95 years old alike, have brought this message to the Mecsek above everything else. I hope that in return the characteristic countryside of Baranya will grant her most welcome visitors the fondest memories. Mr. Zoltán Horváth President of Baranya County Council 3

Terrain Sprint Qualification: The race takes place within the old city walls of Pécs. This is a typical urban terrain, with moderate climb. The competition terrain is the historical, old part of the city with public parks, where city life reflects a typical weekend with open air restaurants and cafés. Around the Finish Area, strong pedestrian traffic and wedding marches are likely to occur. The courses reach inner grounds, underpasses and crossings. We prepare a competition of special atmosphere, offering a quick sightseeing. Sprint Final: The mining town of Komló which was developed in the 20th century industry, will host the competition. After the industrial recess at the end of the 20th century the town found its new identity and its beautiful hilly slopes and interestingly designed urban areas and parks will give home to the Sprint Final race. Competitors have to face the physical challenge of the greater climbs and the steep slopes around the Finish Area while understanding the complex 20th century history of the town. Please do not step on the flowerbeds during the Sprint competitions! Long Qualification 1 The competition terrain is a hilly area at a height of m above sea level typical of the Western part of the Mecsek Mountains. The Finish Area is located at a recultivated mining centre. Countless gullies, valley systems of various size and several depressions render the terrain versatile thus presenting a challenge for navigation. The vegetation also reflects the diverse nature of the terrain with areas of recent deforestation, elderly beech forests, various deciduous forests, and it also have some undergrowth. The versatile terrain has a dense path and road network. After the Sprint race, this is a good warm-up to the Long Final. Long Qualification 2 This is one of the famous terrains of the Mecsek Mountains, a well-known phenomenon in the Hungarian Orienteering life. Competitors will face a very diverse terrain regarding the relief of the karst ground and due to the intensive forest management also the vegetation. At an altitude of m, competitors have to solve very delicate navigation tasks in a detail-oriented typical karst surface. The many depressions (dolinas) and the varied terrain will be a real challenge among the contests of WMOC2011. To reach the Finish Area, competitors will have to descend a steep hill slope at the end of the course. Take special care here. Long Final The second most famous and presently the most beautiful terrain of the Mecsek Mountain awaits the competitors of the Long distance Final. The terrain is located between 420 m and 220 m above sea level between the two qualification terrains. Although many depressions (dolinas), some of which may be 25 m deep, render navigation a difficult task, the mix beech and oak forests of high runnability urges the runners for higher and higher speed, a dense path and forestry road network among the depressions can assist the competitors in their navigation. We would like to give the competitors a real taste of orienteering in the Mecsek Mountains. Herbaceous plants may spread in smaller patches on all long distance terrains. Their growth is mainly influenced by the weather during 2-3 weeks prior to the event. These areas are not marked on the maps. 23

WMOC2011 helpers will give assistance in collecting the warm-up map conforming to the start of the competitor. The maps are intended to help in warm-up and do not resemble the competition terrain. The control points are marked with orienteering flags, but do not have SI-units or codes Controls Each control is equipped with: the control flag two electronic punching stations (SPORTident stations) one pin punching device (for use in the rare case that neither electronic unit works). the control code is located on top of the SPORTident box and on the stand. The number codes used range from 31 to 200. There are lots of controls scattered on the competition terrain. Please make sure to always check your control code! Control Descriptions Control descriptions will be printed on the front side of all competition maps. Loose copies of the control descriptions (not water resistant) will also be available in the start lanes as part of the start procedure. They will not be distributed with registration material before the event. Competitors who intend to collect control descriptions at the start are reminded that they will have one minute to secure their control description sheet the way they choose. There will be no tape available for athletes use. Runners must bring their own equipment to carry the loose control descriptions during the race. The maximum size of the loose control description dimensions 25 controls is 200X55 mm. Courses with fewer controls will have proportionately smaller sheets. Each grid square has a 6mm side Electronic Punching System The SPORTident (SI-card) system will be used for all races. All SI-cards on the start lists are allowed. Unique WMOC2011 SI-cards can be purchased in the Gift Shop for 39,9 EUR. SI-cards can be bought at the WMOC 2011 Gift Shop (limited edition wmoc2011-sicard-9). In case of purchase the rental fee of the rented SI-card or the deposit paid of the card will be counted in the price of the purchase. No SI-card will be provided at any of the race sites for competitors who do not have their own card and have not rented a card at the EC. Everyone can only run with the SI-card listed in the start lists. The Information Desk has to be notified about any kind of change (lost, recently bought, exchanged etc) regarding the SI-card before the start of the daily race The start with the competitor s own corresponding SI chip is the competitor s own responsibility. No corrections or further measures are possible in case of use of the wrong SI-card, this will lead to disqualification. Thank you for your understanding! SPORTident card Clear and check Each SI-card must be cleared and checked before each event. Stations to clear SI-cards will be located at the entrance to the -3 min start box. Insert your SI-card and wait a few seconds until the clear unit beeps and flashes, verifying that previous data have been deleted. After clearing your SI-card, please place the SI-card into a check unit where the check unit will beep and flash immediately, confirming that the SI-card is ready to use. Start personel will be present to assist you. 25

At each control All controls are equipped with two SPORTident units. You may use either of the units. Insert your SI-card into the control unit until the unit beeps and flashes. The red light and beep do not guarantee that the competitor is at the correct control. This should be checked in the usual manner by reading the control code on top of the SPORTidentstation. If you do punch at an incorrect control, simply continue to the correct control; the extra punch will be disregarded by the results software. If the control unit does not function (there is no beep and no flash) then use the pin punch attached to the control stand and punch on your map. If you have pin punched any controls on your map you must hand the map in at the problem desk before leaving the finish area and explain what you have done. At the finish At the finish you must punch at one of the SI units on the finish line. Your elapsed race time only stops when you punch one of these SI units. Competitors must punch one of these finish units even if they don t complete their course. After the finish line After the finish line you will be directed to the download station where the data from your SI-card will be transferred to the results system. The system will verify that you have visited all controls on your course in the correct order. Your split times will be printed immediately. 26

Start Lists and Results For the qualification races, competitors in classes with more than 80 entrants are allocated to parallel heats by a random draw. The heats are indicated by numbers after the age class, e.g. W55-2 is the second heat for W55 runners. Each runner will be in the same heat for both Long Qualification races, but the heats for the Sprint race will be drawn differently. Start lists for the qualification races are included later in this Bulletin. Start lists for the qualification and final races will also be available for review by participants on the wmoc2011.hu website, at the EC in Pécs, at the Information Desk at each competition Arena and at each pre-start. Start times for the Sprint Final will be available on the wmoc2011.hu website by hours, Saturday 2nd July 2011, as well as at the EC. They will also be posted at the Information Desk in the Arena and at the start area on Sunday morning. The first start time for the final is at hours. The first start time for each course is indicated below, with the individual course data. Start times for the Long Final will be available on the wmoc2011.hu website by AM o clock, Thursday July 7th, as well as at the EC. They will also be posted at the Information Desk in the Arena and at the start area on Friday morning. The first start time for the final is at hours. The last start time for each course is indicated below, with the individual course data. Individual split times will be given to each competitor after crossing the finish line. Provisional results lists will be continuously updated at each Arena. The complete results lists will be displayed at the EC from hours after each race. All start lists, results lists, split-times and accumulated times will be made available on the website wmoc2011.hu as well. How to search for your club name or clubid in the Start and Results Lists The Start lists and Results can be searched on the wmoc2011.hu website by selecting by Class or Club Commentary Race commentary will be provided by Timo Teinila (FIN) and Árpád Kocsik (HUN). They will provide competition news, class leader results and more in different languages. WMOC 2011 Radio You can hear the speakers on the channel of 95,2 MHz frequency in the 10 km neighbourhood of the competition Official WMOC time Clocks used at Start procedure will be radio-controlled CEST-time Start Procedure Start organization: Your bib colour (green, white or red) indicates one of the three starts locations, see subsection or the tables under each particular race..each runner is responsible for following the correct marked route. For all races (qualification and finals) there will be a pre-start area before the start line. The competition area is out of bounds until your start time. Distances to the pre-start and time from pre-start to the start location are specific to each race. The route to the start is marked with blue-white stripes. Please refer to the detailed race description in the next sections. Every starting procedure is a silent process, and it is the runner s responsibility to be there on time! In the start area, runners will pass through 3 consecutive starting boxes, and remain one minute in each one. When the clock in front of the first start box (-3 min) displays the runner s starting time, the runner steps in. This will be 3 minutes before the start. At this point the bib number and the starting time are checked. 27

Runners without an SI-card or without a bib will not be allowed to start. If you lose your bib or SI card you can get a replacement at the Information Desk. At the entrance to the first box (-3 min) SI-cards are cleared and checked, supervised by a WMOC2011 official. In the second box (-2min) each runner will pick up his/her loose control description (optional). There will be no tape available for athletes use. Runners must bring their own equipment to carry the loose control descriptions during the race. The control descriptions will also be printed on the map. In the last minute before start time, the competitor steps over the line into the -1 min box (the one with the maps). When entering the box, the runner proceeds to the map issue box labelled with his/her correct class and waits besides the map box for the remaining part of the minute. The start-countdown will be indicated by a series of 5 beeps at -5 to 0 seconds. At the last beep the competitor s race time starts running and the runner can take the map from the map box. The runner is responsible for taking the correct map. Runners will then follow a marked route to the start point which is indicated by a control flag in the terrain and a triangle on the competition map. The distance to the triangle control flag will be between (30 to 100m) for Sprint races and (20 to 150m) in the Long Distance races. You must follow the marked route to the start point. Late Start: Runners who arrive after their designated start time must use the late start lane where an official will accompany him/her. Your SI-card has to be cleared and checked along the lane. Control descriptions and the competition map will be handed out by a WMOC2011 official. The competitor then starts the race by punching the start-unit. Having done this, he/she is free to proceed to the starting point and begin the race. The results of runners who start late will be based on their original start time (with no time compensation). Only if their lateness is the fault of the organizer will their actual race time be used (IOF rules 22.9 and 22.10). Any runner who is late, whether through their own fault or otherwise, should not discuss this with the start officials. If the competitor believes the organizer is responsible, he/she should make a complaint after running at the Information Desk in the Finish Area Finish Procedure All runners are required to pass and punch at the finish line, including those runners who do not complete the whole course. Runners who do not punch at the finish line will be considered as missing in the forest, and may cause a search in the forest for the missing person. Your bib number must be clearly visible as you cross the finish line. 28

When the runner reaches the finish line, he has to punch one of the control units situated directly on the finish line. The time will then be recorded and the race is over. When leaving the finish area (after map collection and refreshment) the runner has to download his/her SI-card at one of the manned download stations, located at the exit. As a confirmation of the completed download, a slip with the runtime and the split-times will be printed out Maximum time Maximum time for Sprint races is 1.0 hour Maximum time for Long races is 2.5 hours Disqualification If a runner is missing one or more controls, or the controls were not visited in the correct order, the runner will be disqualified. Note: If a competitor runs with an SI-card different from the one he/she is registered with in the start lists, the runner will get no time and will be disqualified. It is the runner s responsibility to run with the correct SI-card Complaints and Protests Any complaint should be made in writing to the Organizer at the information desk in the Arenas as soon as possible. The Organizer will decide on the outcome and inform the complainant of the result as soon as possible. There is no fee making for a complaint. If the runner is not satisfied with the result of the complaint, a protest can be made against the organizer s decision no later than 1 hour after that decision has been given to the runner. Protests must be in writing and handed in at the Information desk. It will immediately be forwarded to the IOF Senior Event Adviser. Protests will be handled by the jury, who will communicate their decision to the complainant as soon as possible. There is no fee for making a protest. A special form should be used for both complaints and protests. It can be obtained at the Information Desk Map Reclaim Runners will receive a new map with their course printed on it. Maps can be collected every day at the Information Desk no later than the last competitor s start. The maps will be sorted by groups and only a person presenting the group-id card may pick up the clean maps Refreshments Sprint races will have water available at the pre-start (on the SF red, white start at the start) and at the finish. For the other races, except the Model Events, in addition to water supplies at the pre-start and at the finish there are also refreshment points in the competition area. The water stations in the forest will be supervised by officials. Locations in the forest are not at controls but are close to optimal route choices and will be shown using the standard drink symbol (beaker) on the map. The beaker shows the exact position of the refreshment station First Aid There will be medical first aid facilities at the finish of all the races. First aid locations in the forest on the Long Distance competition maps will be designated by the standard IOF symbol (a purple cross). In case of accident, illness or injury fellow competitors are obliged to assist. Further assistance may be obtained from either First Aid or Refreshment stations. Occurrence of ticks is likely in the forested areas. As they may carry bacteria, please pay attention to the prevention, scrutiny of bites and removal of ticks. 29

How to Qualify for the Finals The qualifying system is described in detail in the IOF Competition Rules (6.14) handbook. This is available at the Event Centre and also at the IOF homepage ( For Sprint races: The fastest competitors from each qualification heat will qualify for the A Final of their class.
