4 Q & A With Joe Franklin The 2008 season marks the beginning of a new era in the proud history of track and field at the University of New Mexico. First-year head coach Joe Franklin came to UNM after 12 years in the same role at Butler University, where he coached eight All-Americans, including one national champion, while maintaining a stellar academic record in the program. Upon his arrival at UNM, Franklin assembled one of the top young coaching staffs in the country, recruiting experts in every track and field discipline from around the country. The new staff takes over a Lobo program that improved dramatically over the past seven years under recently retired coaches Matt and Mark Henry. New Mexico sent five athletes to the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships - the most since with junior Jeremy Johnson earning All-America honors in the 10,000. Since 2001, UNM track and field athletes have won 27 Mountain West Conference indoor/outdoor event titles and earned all-conference honors 117 times. The facilities were also improved dramatically during that time, giving UNM one of the top track and field environments in the nation. Franklin shared his thoughts about the current state of New Mexico track and field and his vision for the future of the program. What do you envision for the future of this program and where are you looking to take New Mexico track and field? It s a building process. We have a great core of elite kids. We don t have a lot of depth and our job is to improve that depth as well as the quality across all events. We have several elite athletes in the sprints, jumps, distance events and throws, but we have to bring up the depth. The future is incredible. We have an unbelievable facility that was just redone. We have incredible weather. We have everything that a recruit wants. The track facilities have received a face-lift and the UNM Indoor Practice Facility was opened this year - how have these additions helped the program? The track is outstanding. Everything that the administration has done at the track and soccer complex is quite astonishing. The indoor facility is a blessing in that four-week period when it might be a little cold. For the vaulters, particularly with the wind, we have an indoor vaulting location that is awesome. From a facility standpoint as a whole there is going to be little things that will be added throughout the year that make the track and soccer complex even better. With completion of the student athlete plaza it will be a top ten facility in the country. Your staff is diverse and from all over country - talk about the experience they have and what you see them doing for the program. Coach Mario Wilson (multi-events/vertical jumps/throws) and coach Leo Settle (sprints/hurdles/horizontal jumps) bring a unique skill set of working with various groups of people. Although we re not at full staff, our goal is to be there in a few years. Right now we only have four of the NCAA allowable six, so our coaches have to be able to coach a lot of events. Mario and Leo do that and they do it extremely well. Erin Howarth is my right hand in cross country and distance running and she is just outstanding. What do you think it is about New Mexico that makes it an attractive place for track and field training and competition? I think that New Mexico is very unique in all regards. If you re going to talk where it ranks - it s one of the top environments in the world to train. In fact, Lance Armstrong s former cycling team just moved here and made Albuquerque home base. It is ideal for training, the climate s great, you just can t beat it. You return two conference champion 400-meter sprinters in seniors Ariel Burr and Jarrin Solomon - what do they have to do to get back to the NCAAs and improve on their finishes from last year? Our goal for Jarrin is for him to make the world championship team (for Trinidad and Tobago) and for Ariel to make the U.S. Olympic Trials. If we do that we are going to be very successful in the Mountain West and NCAA level. This is very important for them in their personal environment. DOMNICK MEADOWS 24 University of New Mexico Track & Field 2008
5 All-American pole vaulter Robert Caldwell is back after redshirting in 2007 how has he dealt with the layoff and how far can he go in his senior year? Robert has transitioned well. I think that he has a good shot in the vault. If you are on that day anybody can win it. I think he is one of those seven or eight guys that has a shot to win it. He just needs to jump within himself. Junior Whitney Johnson an NCAA regional qualifier - also redshirted last year - what you see her doing this season in the pole vault? Whitney has made a huge recovery. She is coming off a major ACL reconstruction. You get a little nervous when you are planting your leg and taking off, being 13 feet in the air. She is doing a great job, she s very positive, she s a good team leader and she has just been awesome to work with. In my opinion she will make progress to winning the national championship. Junior Sandy Fortner gives you a weapon in a number of events and has been close to cracking the NCAA field what does she need to do to break through this year? When you add her in the multi-event competitions and everything else that she does, she is a pretty talented woman. For Sandy I think it s going to be the little things that make the difference from here on out. When you get to that elite level in athletics, it s the amount of sleep you get, how much water you re drinking, those little things that make the difference between the good ones and the great ones. You ve added new faces from all over the place in the distance events to go along with a strong core of veteran runners - talk the talent you have in the distance group this year. When you add Lee Emanuel, Brock Hagerman and Mat Ashton in to the mix, those are guys that are going to score in the conference and score heavy in the conference. The goal is to become a distance power and I think that we are on the way to doing that. On the women s side you add Kara Henry, Carolyn Boosey and Michelle Corrigan, who are all tremendous talents. With the newcomers added to a group that includes solid veteran runners like Joseph Garcia and Sheyenne Lewis, I think the distance corps should stay strong. Q & A With Joe Franklin There s a wild card on the team this year in two-time All-American Jeremy Johnson who is petitioning the NCAA for another year of outdoor eligibility - if he is able to come back what kind of impact do you see him having this spring? Jeremy will have a huge impact. Jeremy is an unbelievable leader and he leads by example. He works his tail off, he s virtually a straight A student. You come across very few men or women that are a total package like that. He is a potential national champion in the 10,000 or 5,000 and obviously his return will give our team a tremendous boost. A solid cast of throwers return, led by MWC javelin champ Katie Coronado and another regional qualifier in Anthony Fairbanks what do those two need to do to continue their progress in their junior seasons? Just keep developing their general strength and quickness, and they are doing well. We re not going to throw a lot outdoors to make sure they preserve their arms. Our goal for Katie is to place in the NCAA Championships and become an All-American. Fairbanks just missed qualifying last year, but those are two people that can make it to the NCAA Championships and represent New Mexico in Des Monies, Iowa. Senior Tiyana Peters and junior Josh Cosio give you a pair of excellent high jumpers, but you also have some talent in the long and triple jump events what impact do you think you can make in those events this year? I think that Josh has a chance to win the Mountain West. He is one of those four jumpers that has a shot. Tiyana Peters has won many MWC titles and we look for her to have a shot to win them again indoors and outdoors. Hopefully by the end of their careers we can get Josh and Tiy in a position to make it to the national championships. Sandy Fortner is outstanding in both the high jump and long jump and (sophomore) Aditi Majumdar is one that we hope to get big marks from in the pole vault later in the year. The horizontal jumpers are going to be outstanding as well. (Sophomore) Alesha Walker is going to scare the school record in the long jump and we hope that she will scare the Mountain West and come away with a title as well. (Sophomore) Deanna Young, (junior) Hagit Salamon and (senior) Domnick Meadows are all going to have great seasons for us as well. If we can get them going we should score a lot of points in the long and the triple jumps. KATIE CORONADO University of New Mexico Track & Field
