3 Introduction Summary: The 8 th annual Sierra Vista Trail Runs (SVTR) will be held on Saturday, March 2nd and Sunday, March 3rd, 2019 on the Sierra Vista Trail near Las Cruces, NM. The runs will consist of six distances: on Saturday, March 2nd, a 100k, 50k, and 21k (half-marathon); on Sunday, March 3rd, a 10k, 5k, and 1-mile kids free fun run. The Sierra Vista Trail Runs is the main fundraiser for the Southern New Mexico Trail Alliance. In 2017/18 the funds were used to provide trail building/maintenance workshops, support local trail events, purchase tools, and continue advocacy and education about trails and outdoor recreation. The total capacity of the event will be capped at 300 participants per day for all distances, 600 total participants over the two day event. Please read this entire manual and familiarize yourself with the course map and directions. or call the race directors with any questions. Registration Registration is through ultrasignup.com. Price increases exist leading up to the event. Registration closes February 28, 2019 at midnight. Shirts can only be guaranteed for those that register by February 14 th. Sponsors and Volunteers: The Sierra Vista Trail Runs is a community-supported event for the community and open to everyone. We have great volunteers, donors and sponsors that make this event possible and make it fun. Please thank and patronize these groups and businesses. The Sierra Vista Trail Runs is also the main fundraiser for the Southern New Mexico Trail Alliance. Proceeds from the runs will be donated to the Southern New Mexico Trail Alliance to help improve our local trails and trail community. 4 Logistics Race Schedule: Friday, March pm: Packet Pickup in Las Cruces, NM. This is also the first Friday of the month, when many shops and galleries will be open downtown. Saturday, March 2 (Long Race Day) - Set up start/finish line: Sierra Vista Trail - Sierra Norte Trailhead 5 am 7:30 AM Packet Pickup and runner check in at race start 6 am - 100k begins 7 am 50k begins 8 am 21k race begins 11 am until food runs out: Post-race food served at start/finish 2 am (March 3) Time cutoff for 100k, 50k, and 21k races Sunday, March 3 (Short Race Day) -Start/finish line: Sierra Vista Trail - Sierra Norte Trailhead 8 AM 8:30 AM Packet Pickup and runner check in at race start 9:30 AM 10k race begins 9:45 AM 5k race begins 10:10 AM - Kid s fun run 10 AM until food runs out: Post race food served at start/finish 11 AM Time cutoff for 10k and 5k March 3-9: Clean up site, sweep course, pick up flagging, complete post event reports. Contact SNMTA if you would like to volunteer. Directions: All distances will begin at the Sierra Norte trailhead, located off of Dripping Springs Road. The Sierra Vista Trail is located just outside of Las Cruces, NM at the foot of the Organ Mountains. From Interstate 25, take exit 1 (University Ave) and head east towards the mountains. Continue on University, past Tortugas A Mountain, and the name changes to Dripping Springs Road. After a cattle guard, look for a trailhead sign and markings on the right (south) side of the road. The start will be very visible. Parking for race participants will be along the shoulder and pull-offs of Dripping Springs Road. Parking is also available along the shoulder of Baylor Canyon Road. Volunteers will be on site to help direct traffic and parking. Doña Ana County will be contacted regarding parking on Dripping Springs Road and Baylor Canyon Road. Try to car pool if possible. 4

5 Parking within the turnoff from Dripping Springs Road to the trailhead will be reserved for event staff, volunteers, medical support, and vendors on an as-needed basis. DO NOT PARK IN THE DESERT! It causes damage to the fragile desert environment. You will be ticketed and may compromise the permitting of future events and harm the fragile desert environment that we love. Lodging: Motels: Hotel Encanto de Las Cruces will be the host hotel and will offer discounts to participants and volunteers. See ultrasignup.com for a link to the discounted rate. Several motels are located off of the University exit of Interstate 25 and along Telshor Blvd. Camping: Limited dispersed camping on public lands is available at the Sierra Vista Trailhead, Tortugas A Mountain and along Baylor Canyon Road. These public lands are managed by the Bureau of Land Management Las Cruces District. Contact the BLM for specific questions. The same parking stipulations mentioned above apply to camping as well. DON T PARK IN THE DESERT! A BLM campground is available at Aguirre Springs on the east side of the Organ Mountains. There is a fee for the campground. By car this campground is about 45 minutes away. There are several RV parks and a KOA in Las Cruces. The KOA is approximately 30 minutes by car. 5

6 Course Description: All of the runs will begin and end at the Sierra Norte Trailhead off of Dripping Springs Road. All turnaround locations will vary depending on the distance of the run. Signage, a trail marshal and/or aid station volunteers will be present at the turnaround locations to direct runners. The Sierra Vista Trail is a rugged, rocky and rolling single track running through the Chihuahuan Desert at the base of the Organ and Franklin Mountains. The routes are all on trail, mostly single track with some sections on two track jeep roads. A map of the course is included in the race operation plan appendix. 100k The 100k will start with a 0.6 mile out-and back to Dripping Springs Road, then head south on the Sierra Vista Trail to the first right turn onto La Maria Loop at mile one. Follow the outer La Maria Loop counterclockwise to intersect the south intersection of the Sierra Vista Trail at mile 5.5 of the race. Continue south on the Sierra Vista Trail to the turnaround at Highway 404. Take the Sierra Vista Trail back to the start. Do not take the La Maria Loop on the return. 50k The 50k will start with a 0.6 mile out-and back to Dripping Springs Road, then run entirely on the Sierra Vista Trail. Stay on the Sierra Vista Trail heading south to the turnaround at Vado. Take the Sierra Vista Trail back to the start/finish. Do not take the La Maria Loop at any time. 21k The 21k will start with a 0.6 mile out-and back to Dripping Springs Road, then head south on the Sierra Vista Trail to the first right turn onto La Maria Loop at mile one. Follow the outer La Maria Loop counterclockwise to the south intersection of the Sierra Vista Trail at mile 5.5 of the race. Continue south on the Sierra Vista Trail to the turnaround at the Talavera Aid Station. Take the Sierra Vista Trail back heading north, to the south intersection of the La Maria Loop. Follow the La Maria Loop back clockwise, intersecting the Sierra Vista Trail to the north. Take the Sierra Vista Trail north to the start/finish. This is an out-and-back course. Take the La Maria Loop both out and back. 10k The 10k will start with a 0.6 mile out-and-back to Dripping Springs Road, then head south on the Sierra Vista Trail to the first right turn onto La Maria Loop at mile one. Follow the outer La Maria Loop counterclockwise to the south intersection of the Sierra Vista Trail at 6

7 mile 5.5 of the race. Turn left and head back north on the Sierra Vista Trail and continue to the start/finish. 5k The 5k will head south on the Sierra Vista Trail to the first right turn onto La Maria Loop at mile 0.4 of the race. Take the inner La Maria Loop counterclockwise to the south intersection of the Sierra Vista Trail. Follow the Sierra Vista Trail north to the start/finish. Follow 5k signs for the inner La Maria Loop. Flagging: The course will be flagged the prior to the race. The routes will be well flagged with orange or pink flagging, pin flags, rock cairns, brown BLM trail markers, flour, and temporary signs. Regardless of how well the course is marked, people have gotten lost around the jeep roads located between the fence line and Pena Blanca aid stations. Please familiarize yourself with the course map and pay attention to the trail and markings. This area is wide open, so if you get off course, it is easy to look around and see other runners or landmarks and make your way back onto the course. A sweeper will remove markings within 24 hours of the race ending. Let us know if you d like to volunteer to do this. Drop Bags: Drop bags will be allowed for 100k runners at the Vado and Hwy 404 aid stations. Drop bags for 50k runners will be allowed at the Vado aid station. Mark you name, bib number, and AS name on your bag. Drop off your bags at packet pickup or at the start before the race. 100k, 50k, and 21k runner check-in: Please check in at all crewed aid stations both out and back during the race. This is especially important for 100k and 50k runners at Highway 404, Vado, and Pena Blanca. Aid Station Locations: All aid stations will be at existing trailhead parking areas or along existing gravel roads. The aid stations will consist of shade tents, tables, chairs, 1-4 vehicles, trash cans, water, food, and personel. All stations are accessible by vehicle but some require 4x4 and may not have vehicles on site due to the remote nature of the station. These stations will be setup prior to the event and the volunteer staff will access them by bicycle or foot on the day of the event. Some stations may not be staffed but will have water and gels set out prior to the event. 7

Sierra Norte (all participants): The start/finish aid station will be crewed from 5 am Saturday, March 2nd until 12 pm on Sunday, March 3rd. There will be up to 12 volunteers and race staff (3-4 people) during this time. Additionally, there will be a food truck with staff (1-3 people) and an ambulance with EMTs (2-4 people). There will two large canopies approximately 20 x 40 feet, ft. folding tables, and 50 folding chairs, x12 shade canopies, all set up within the lower and upper gravel road and parking areas near the trail map kiosk. Six to eight port-a-potties will be setup in one of the pull-off parking areas along the gravel road between Dripping Springs road and the trailhead. All parking for staff and volunteers will be within the gravel road and parking areas. All material will be removed by Monday, March 4th. La Maria (100k, 50k, 21k, 10k): The aid station will be crewed intermittently from 6 am on Saturday through 10 am on Sunday. There will be up to four volunteers and up to two vehicles present during this time. Parking will be at the intersection of Talavera Avenue and Chippewa Trail (both gravel roads) next to the gate accessing the trail. There will be one 10-ft x 10-ft canopy, one 6-ft x 2.5-ft folding table with drinks and food, and several folding chairs. All material will be removed by Sunday, March 3rd. 9

10 Talavera (100k, 50k, 21k): The aid station will be crewed from 6 am on Saturday until approximately 1 am Sunday for the 100k, 50k, and 21k races. There will be between two to four volunteers and up to four vehicles present during these times. Parking will be within the gravel parking lot area. There will be one 10-ft x 10-ft canopy, one 6-ft x 2.5-ft folding table with drinks and food, several folding chairs, and one port-a-potty set up?. All material will be removed by Sunday, March 3rd. Fenceline (100k, 50k): This will be an un-crewed aid station and will consist of one 6-ft x 2.5-ft folding table with drink dispensers and some emergency food. One vehicle will transport the supplies on Friday and remove them by Sunday, March 3rd. Pena Blanca (100k, 50k): The aid station will be crewed from 7 am on Saturday until approximately 11 pm on Sunday. There will be between two to eight volunteers and up to four vehicles present during these times. Parking will be within the gravel parking lot area. There will be 1-2, 10-ft x 10-ft canopy; 1-3, 6-ft x 2.5-ft folding table with drinks and food, and several folding chairs. All material will be removed by Sunday, March 3rd. Powerline (100k, 50k): The aid station will be crewed on Saturday only from 8 am until approximately 10 pm on Saturday. There will be between two to four volunteers and up to two vehicles present during these times. Parking will be along the power line road and adjacent pulloff. There will be one 10-ft x 10-ft canopy, one 6-ft x 2.5-ft folding table with drinks and food, and several folding chairs. This station may be un-crewed in the same manner as the Fenceline aid station. All material will be removed by Sunday, March 3rd. Vado (100k, 50k): The aid station will be crewed on Saturday only from 8 am until approximately 9 pm. There will be between two to four volunteers and up to four vehicles present during these times. Parking will be within the gravel parking area of the trailhead. There will be 1-2, 10-ft x 10-ft canopies; 1-2, 6-ft x 2.5-ft folding tables with drinks and food, and several folding chairs. All material will be removed by Sunday, March 3rd. Webb Gap (100k): This aid station will be crewed on Saturday only from 9 am until approximately 8 pm. There will be between two to four volunteers and up to two vehicles present during these times. Parking will be on the two-track jeep road and adjacent pulloffs. There will be one 12x12 shade canopy, one 6-ft x 2.5-ft folding table with drinks and food, and 1-2 chairs. This station may be un-crewed in the same manner as the Fenceline aid station. All material will be removed by Sunday, March 3rd. Highway 404 (100k): The aid station will be crewed on Saturday only from 10 am until approximately 7 pm. There will be between two to four volunteers and up to four vehicles present during these times. Parking will be within the gravel parking area. There will be 1-2, 10-ft x 10-ft canopies; 1-2, 6-ft x 2.5-ft folding table with drinks and food, and several folding chairs. All material will be removed by Sunday, March 3rd. 10

11 Directions to Aid Stations: Sierra Norte: From I-25,take exit 1 onto University Ave and head east, toward the mountains. This road turns into Dripping Springs Road. The trailhead is on the south side of the road, approximately 7 miles from I-25 exit 1. Park along Dripping Springs Road. Parking within the trailhead lot is reserved for volunteers and vendors. La Maria: From I-25 take exit 1 onto University Ave and head east, toward the mountains. This road turns into Dripping Springs Road. After 4.8 miles turn right onto Soledad Canyon Road. After 0.6 miles turn left just before the fire station to stay on Soledad Canyon Road. After 1 mile turn left onto Chippewa Trail. The aid station will be 0.5 miles down Chippewa Trail. Park off of the intersection of Chippewa Trail and Talavera Avenue. Talavera: From I-25 take exit 1 onto University Ave and head east, toward the mountains. This road turns into Dripping Springs Road. After 4.8 miles turn right onto Soledad Canyon Road. After 0.6 miles turn left just before the fire station to stay on Soledad Canyon Road. Head towards the mountains for 3.1 miles and the trailhead is on the south side of the road. Park in the trailhead parking lot. Fenceline: Please contact race director for directions. This is on a rough, remote jeep road. Pena Blanca: From I-10 exit 151 (Mesquite) and head east towards the mountains. This road turns to gravel and makes a hard left, then hard right, then goes straight across a wider, powerline road onto a smaller jeep road. Continue east towards Pena Blanca (the white outcrop) and the trailhead is on the north side of the road approximately 4.7 miles from I-10 exit 151. Park in the trailhead parking lot. Powerline: From I-10 exit 151 (Mesquite) and head east towards the mountains. This road turns to gravel and makes a hard left, then hard right, then goes straight across a wider, powerline road onto a smaller jeep road. Continue east towards Pena Blanca (the white outcrop) and turn right onto the power line road approximately 3.8 miles from the I-10 exit 151. The aid station is down this road approximately 1.7 miles at the intersection with the trail. The location will be flagged. This is a rugged jeep road. Park along the road. Vado: From I-10 exit 155 (Vado) take the 5th exit at the traffic circle and head east over I- 10 to a second traffic circle. Take the second exit onto County Road B-19. Continue east on this road for about 2.2 miles until there is a split onto a dirt road on the left. The trailhead is a few hundred yards down this road, approximately 2.5 miles from the I-10 exit 155. Park in the trailhead parking lot. Highway 404: From I-10, exit 162 and head east on NM-404 (Ohara Road) for 4.1 miles. Turn left onto the dirt road. The location will be flagged. *All aid stations will be highly visible and flagged on race day. Contact the race directors for further directions. 11

12 Cupless Race: In order to reduce waste and cost, the Sierra Vista Trail Runs is a cupless race. This means you have to carry your own water vessel to fill up at aid stations. This can be a bottle or hydration bladder or small cup. There are many options out there. Food and Drink: Each aid station will have adequate food and drink for the runners. Drinks will consist of water and some kind of sports drink (i.e. Gatorade, Nuun, Heed). Food will consist of typical race food. This may include things such as PB&J sandwiches, chips, pretzels, M&Ms, fruit, cookies, wraps, energy gels, granola bars, etc. If you prefer something specific to eat on your run then we suggest you pack it yourself. Food will be provided at the finish line on Saturday and Sunday. The food will either be sold by a local vendor or prepared by race volunteers. 12

13 Support/Other Crews: Runners can have crews at all the aid stations except the Fenceline, Powerline, and Webb Gap stations. These three aid stations are remote and are not easily accessible nor have much parking. Runners are responsible for their crews. Make sure your crew is not hindering the race, aid station operations or creating parking/traffic issues. Your crew will be asked to leave if they are getting in the way and not cooperating with race staff. Parking is limited at the aid stations and NO parking is allowed off of the existing roads and parking areas. Plan accordingly. Drop Bags: Drop bags are allowed for the 100k and 50k runners at the Vado aid station and for the 100k runners at the Hwy 404 aid station. Drop your bags off at the start and we will return them as necessary in the afternoon and night after runners have turned around and passed through the stations. Dropping: We know you are all pretty damn tough if you ve signed up for the Sierra Vista Trail Runs. However, bad days and accidents happen. So, if a runner needs to drop, they can do this at any of the crewed aid stations. Notify an aid station volunteer and/or radio person that you are dropping. A ride will be arranged but this may take a while. Ask people at the aid station about possible rides, but you might have to wait until the station is closed down. If you drop at the more remote Fenceline, Powerline, and Web Gapp aid stations, you might have to wait longer for a ride. Please be aware of your abilities and health during the run. If a volunteer suggests you should drop from the run please consider their advice seriously. We usually don t make good decisions when we are bad off. No one wants anyone to get injured so if you feel you need to drop please do so. Aid station volunteers can pull anyone from the race in the event of a health concern. Cutoffs: 100k, 50k and 21k distance races will end at 2 am on Sunday. This is 20 hrs for the 100k, 19 hours for the 50k, and 18 hours for the 21k. If you have not reached your turnaround aid station in half of this time, then we highly suggest you drop. All runners should be off the trail by 2 am on Sunday. Please use your best judgment when deciding which distance to run and if you should drop at an aid station. We really don't want volunteers to stay out to sunrise waiting for you to crawl in. 13

14 Other Rules and Concerns: - Hiking poles are allowed - Pacers are allowed for 100k runners beginning at the Hwy 404 turnaround. - Pacers are allowed to give food and water to runners, but it must be available to all runners. - No Littering! Use trash and recycle bins. Please enjoy the outdoors responsibly. - Hikers/walkers are allowed as long as you make the cutoffs - Dogs and baby strollers are allowed as long as they do not interfere with the race and other runners and you are in complete control of them. If these become a problem, you will be removed from the event. - Please respect all runners, volunteers, spectators, neighbors and other user groups. Please be courteous of those wishing to pass and those passing. - Headphones are allowed but be aware that rattlesnakes may be out and you won t hear them rattling if you re rockin out! Other users such as bikers and equestrians will also be difficult to hear if using headphones. No speakers allowed! Keep your jams to yourself. See above. - The trail will not be closed to other users during this event. Other users may be on the trail the day of the race. Please respect their presence. Signs will be posted prior to the event to notify other users. - This is a trail run on challenging terrain and differs greatly from running events held on road. Please be aware of this and assess your own abilities before registering. We are not responsible for any injuries sustained during the day of the event. - This is a FUN event on a great trail, through some of our beautiful public lands, with fellow runners. Have a good time. 14

15 Post Race Awards Unique awards will be awarded to the top three women and men in each distance. Also, every 100k and 50k finisher will receive a finishers s award. Other fun awards also be determined and awarded randomly to participants. Please make plans to stick around for the awards and support all the runners. Food: Food will be sold by a local vendor or prepared by volunteers at the finish line (Sierra Norte trailhead) on Saturday and Sunday. Food will be available for the public. T-Shirts: Shirts will be available for purchase at the time of on-line registration. T-shirts will be included with registration for the 50k runners. Shirts are optional for the other distances. Runners will have the option to purchase a shirt at registration. Limited shirts will be available for purchase on the day of the race. The shirts will be a really cool design so order one early. To guarantee the desired shirt size, please register by February 14th. 15

16 Operation and Emergency Plan Emergency Plan: - Through this manual and , participants in the Sierra Vista Trail Runs will be clearly informed of the nature and potential risks of this event. - Each aid station will have this manual and the list of emergency contacts below. Aid station captains will be notified of the emergency plan and contact information. - As described below, limited first aid will be available on the race course. Local EMS will be notified prior to the event to clarify access to the trail in the case of an emergency. - As described below, weather and runner conditions will be monitored closely. The race may be cancelled due to weather at the discretion of the race directors. Runners may be pulled for not following any of the event rules or for health concerns. - Transportation will be arranged for runners or volunteers needing assistance. Weather/Cancellation: Although unlikely, the race directors can cancel, delay or re-schedule the Sierra Vista Trail Runs if deemed necessary, for any reason. The directors can remove anyone from the event if deemed necessary. Weather during March in Las Cruces can be highly variable. Pay close attention to the forecast leading up to race day. Typically, mornings will be cool with very pleasant running conditions all day. Rain, snow, strong winds, extreme hot and cold temperatures can occur. Please be prepared. First Aid: Limited first aid supplies will be available at the aid stations along with basic first aid help from volunteers. EMTs will be present at the Sierra Norte trailhead and Search and Rescue teams will be at the Pena Blanca aid station and along the course. Hospitals (Mountain View Regional Medical Center and Memorial Medical Center) and ambulances in Las Cruces, Anthony, and El Paso are a short distance away if needed. AMR will be on site at the start/finish for medical assistance. 16

17 Operation Plan Schedule: - Week prior to the event: flag course and make final preparations for the race - Day before, Friday March 1: Setup start/finish area. This will include 6-8 porta potties, a large event tent, start/finish line banner, tables and chairs, small tents for volunteers and sponsors, area for food truck, flag areas for parking, place traffic and directional signs along Dripping Springs and Soledad Canyon Roads. This will be similar to the setup in past years. - Race Day (Long Runs), Sat. March 2: finish setup at the start/finish area, aid stations will setup prior to the event and breakdown after the course is cleared of runners, complete races for day 1 as described above, clean up after day 1 races. - Race Day (Short Runs), Sun. March 3: complete races for day 2 as described above, clean up after day 2 races, begin removing flagging, break down and remove start/finish line setup. - Monday March 4: Porta-Potties will be picked up, event tent will be picked up, final flagging will be removed from the course - March 5-12: address any final concerns, complete post-use report for the BLM 17
