7 7 ETHIOPIAN CLEAN SWEEP AS MEKONNEN SETS WORLD JUNIOR RECORD For the third year in a row, a marathon new boy won the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon as teenager Tsegaye Mekonnen led an Ethiopian whitewash in the emirate in January The 18 year-old caused a major surprise, running 2h:04m:32s in his first marathon, to break the unofficial World Junior Record by 95 seconds and record the second fastest time ever seen in the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon. The second and third placed athletes also achieved world-class times of sub 2:06 with fellow Ethiopians Markos Geneti and Girmay Birhanu finishing in 2:05:13 and 2:05:49 respectively. As expected the women s race was also dominated by Ethiopians, who took the first nine places. Surprisingly Mula Seboka beat favourites Meselech Melkamu and Meseret Hailu to romp home in 2:25:01 and collect the US$200,000 first prize. Melkamu followed in second place with 2:25:23, Firehiwot Dado was third in 2:25:53 with Hailu fourth in 2:26:20. The pace was changing a lot during the first half and I think with an even pace I could have run faster, said Tsegaye Mekonnen. But of course I m very happy and proud of my performance. I had no idea about the World Junior Record so this is a bonus for me. The men s race began very fast with split times that were well inside the then world record of 2:03:23 established by Kenya s Wilson Kipsang in Berlin in A group of around 20 athletes passed 10km in 29:14 and then reached the half way mark in 61:37. However at that stage the pace had already dropped to around 2m:58s to 3m per kilometre. This was not fast enough for Kipsang s world record which was soon out of reach. However, with a new unofficial World Junior Record (the IAAF does not not officially list junior records for the marathon) and the second best time for the event in fifteen years, the men s race once again underlined the pace of what is one of the fastest courses in world marathon running.

9 9 For Seboka, who finished 11th in Dubai two years earlier and subsequently outside of the money, the richest prize available in international marathon running will make a huge difference. I will partly use this to support my parents and some poor people back home, said the diminutive Ethiopian. I will have to speak to my husband about what we do with the other part of it. In the 10km Road Race, victory in the men s division went to John Ndugu of Kenya (28m:56s) with Feysa Dejene Amosha of Ethiopia in second (28m:58s) and Ihya Ben-Youssef of Morocco in third (29m:32s). The women s race saw victory go to Gladys Jemaiyo (33m:40s) of Kenya as her compatriot Sheila Jeptoo Rono (35m:03s) and Selam Wale Mihret of Ethiopia (35m:44s) claimed second and third respectively. Held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council and supported by the Dubai Sports Council, adidas, Dubai Eye 103.8FM, Masafi, Dubai Holding, Dubai Police, the RTA and Dubai Municipality, the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon saw the trophies presented by a host of dignitaries. Leading the presentation party was HH Sheikh Majed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman Dubai Culture & Art Authority with HE Mattar Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, Ahmed Al Kamali, President of the UAE Athletics Federation and IAAF Council Member, and Jonathan Morris, Standard Chartered Bank CEO UAE.

Elite Men Elite Women Wheelchair Race Men and Women Mass runners 10KM START The 10km will also start on the Umm Suqeim Road past the Police Academy near the Madinat Jumeirah Jumeirah overlooking the iconic Burj Al Arab. COURSE DETAILS The Marathon Route will start on the Umm Suqeim Road at the Madinat Jumeirah end turning right onto the Jumeirah Beach Road running past the Burj Al Arab and the Jumeirah Beach Hotel. The runners will head up the Jumeirah Beach Road running towards the Union Flag, running past it and turning at the next junction heading back along the Jumeirah Beach Road past the Union Flag again. The runners will then run back along the Jumeirah Beach Road running past the Grand Mosque, the Jumeirah Beach Park and head back towards the Burj Al Arab. After passing the Burj Al Arab again the runners will head past the Madinat Jumeirah along Al Sufouh Road running past the entrance to Palm Island and turning back at The One & Only Royal Mirage Hotel entrance at Dubai Media City heading back along Al Sufouh Road to the finish towards the Burj Al Arab. At the Madinat Jumeirah junction the runners will turn right along the Umm Suqueim Road for approx 500 metres to the finish just before the Dubai Police Academy. The course is fast and flat with excellent road surfaces. KILOMETRE MARKERS Kilometre markers will be placed prominently on the route every kilometre of the course. TIME KEEPING The Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon uses advance MIKATAGS technology to time all runners in the race, including the wheelchair athletes. All runners will be issued with a number including a Tag - a transponder attached to their running number. This Tag is read each time the runner passes strategically placed mats and the finish line. These times are instantly relayed using an integrated communications system developed by Mika Timing, the marathon s information services provider, to TV for immediate on screen display. The same information is also delivered to the marathon s race day Media Centre to provide an instant resource for the world s media. All results will be posted on the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon website on race day. The address is DRINKS AND DRINKS STATIONS Dehydration is the biggest problem that marathon runners have to overcome. In a hard race on a hot and humid day, up to four litres of fluid can be lost through sweating and exhalation. It is important for runners to keep well hydrated. It should also be noted that overhydration can also be an issue. It is just as important for runners not to overhydrate reducing sodium levels. Isotonic drinks supplied by Isostar will be available at six stations. Drinks will be provided at the 10km, 15km, 20km, 25km, 30km and 35km stations. Water supplied by Masafi will be available at every 2.5km starting from 5km with the last drinks available at 40km and the finish. Around 100, ml and 500ml plastic bottles of water have been supplied to meet the needs of the Marathon. In addition to water, many of the elite runners prefer to drink their own special drinks during the race. These special bottles are collected on Thursday night, kept in secure and cool conditions and placed on the route at the drink stations before the race.

27 27 ELITE RUNNERS ELITE MEN BIOGRAPHIES Lelisa Desisa (Ethiopia) Born: 14 January, 1990 (25 years) Marathon Best: 2:04:45 (1st - Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon, 2013) Berhanu Shiferaw (Ethiopia) Born: 31 May, 1993 (21 years) Marathon Best: 2:04:48 (2nd - Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon, 2013) Feysa Lilesa (Ethiopia) Born: 1 February, 1990 (23 years) Marathon Best: 2:04:52 (2nd - Chicago, 2012) Lelisa Desisa made history when the Ethiopian won the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon title in Not only did he smash the sub-2:05 barrier on his marathon debut, he led five men across the finish line under that time, an unprecedented achievement in marathon history. He is yet another Ethiopian from the Oromia region, as are Kenenisa Bekele, the Dibaba sisters and the women s Olympic Marathon champions Fatuma Roba and Tiki Gelana. After such a glittering debut, he maintained a busy and successful schedule in the rest of 2013, winning Boston in April before taking a silver medal in the World Championship Marathon in Moscow in August. His rise was checked when he failed to finish Boston in 2014 but redeemed himself with second place in New York in November. Although he hasn t run close to his debut time, Dubai s course should offer the ideal chance to attack 2:05 and better. He is one of the numerous Ethiopians who have achieved tremendous break-throughs in Dubai in recent years. Two years ago, Shiferaw announced himself on the world stage with a personal best of 2:04:48 when he chased the winner and compatriot Lelisa Desisa all the way to the finish line, losing by two seconds. The 19-year-old had taken just over four minutes off his fastest time. Subsequently the former steeple chaser, who ran his marathon debut at the age of 18 with a fine 2:09:19 finish in Ljubljana, has not competed again internationally. Two years after his scintillating marathon debut, Berhanu returns to Dubai, ready to give his career another major boost. A highly experienced marathon runner who won a bronze medal at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, Feysa Lilesa should welcome the opportunity of showing he remains fast and competitive on his Dubai debut. His best time is 2:04:52 for second place in Chicago in 2012 and he was fourth in London a year later in 2:07:46. However, apart from the bronze in the World Championships over three years ago, most of his recent marathons have brought disappointment brought setbacks as he failed to finish the World Championship Marathon in Moscow and then Frankfurt, almost three months later. He returned to more solid form with 2:08:26 for ninth place in London in April,

28 28 ELITE RUNNERS ELITE MEN BIOGRAPHIES Kenenisa Bekele (Ethiopia) Born: 13 June, 1982 (32 years) Marathon Best: 2:05:04 (1st - Paris, 2014) Bazu Worku (Ethiopia) Born: 15 September, 1990 (24 years) Marathon Best: 2:05:25 (3rd - Berlin, 2010) Girmay Birhanu (Ethiopia) Born: 22 November, 1986 (28 years) Marathon Best: 2:05:49 (3rd - Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon, 2014) The range of Kenenisa s achievements, combined with the way the men s marathon has developed in the past couple of years, makes the Ethiopian s debut in Dubai a tantalising prospect. His marathon debut in Paris in April 2014 suggested that his talent for the classic distance on the road could match what he has already displayed over track and cross country; an ability which has won him three Olympic titles and a grand total of 16 world crowns, coupled with the kind of finishing speed at the end of a track race which ensures he remains the world record holder at 5,000m and 10,000m. Following his victorious Parisian debut, Kenenisa finished fourth in Chicago in 2:05:51. If he is to mount a creditable challenge for Olympic Marathon glory in Rio 2016, Dubai will be a crucial stage in his development. Bazu Worku turned to the marathon while still in his teens and produced two superb performances. At the age of 18 he ran 2:06:05 to finish second in Paris in At the time this was an unofficial world junior record (while the IAAF does not recognise junior records in the marathon, these times are widely listed). He then significantly improved in his third marathon in Berlin Despite atrocious weather conditions he finished third in 2:05:25 and the only men to beat him were the Kenyan superstars Patrick Makau and Geoffrey Mutai. Shortly after his 20th birthday he became the youngest marathon runner to break 2:06. Subsequently the Ethiopian hasn t quite lived up to those outstanding early performances but he did win both marathons he contested in 2014, winning Houston in 2:07:32 and then the Otsu title in Japan with 2:09:10 with just six weeks in between. Girmay returns for his third appearance in Dubai. Two years ago the Ethiopian ran his marathon debut on this super flat course, clocking a fine 2:09:48. He then went into marathon overdrive, completing three more within six months, completely against standard coaching advice. His stamina held up for most of the time, producing runner-up finishes in Rome and Prague and then fourth on Australia s Gold Coast. But this was hardly good long term planning and his approach changed in 2013 and paid off with an improvement of more than two minutes in Amsterdam with second place in 2:06:06. He was back in Dubai last year and finished third in 2:05:49. His most recent marathon brought victory in Beijing in 2:10:42 in December, despite the city s notorious air pollution. 29 29 ELITE RUNNERS ELITE MEN BIOGRAPHIES Chele Dechasa (Ethiopia) Born: 13 June, 1984 (30 years) Marathon Best: 2:06:33 (2nd - Dubai, 2010) Limenih Getachew (Ethiopia) Born: 1991 Marathon Best: 2:06:49 (2nd - Paris, 2014) Tebalu Zawude (Ethiopia) Born: 2 November, 1987 (27 years) Marathon Best: 2:07:10 (4th - Frankfurt, 2014) It s been five years since he produced a memorable run for runner-up in Dubai and a personal best which still stands. The second place behind Haile Gebrselassie at his peak proved that his fellow Ethiopian was a marathon man to watch for the future, especially as he had sliced almost two minutes from his debut for second place in Amsterdam in His return to Dubai in 2012 did not end so happily as Dechasa trailed in 17th in 2:09:22, though the time was certainly respectable by the standards of most international races. However, he has shown he can compete with the best and take podium places, finishing third in Amsterdam in 2010 and occupying the same position in Rotterdam the following year. He showed solid form to finish second in 2:11:26 in Chunchon, South Korea in Three consecutive runnersup positions mark Limenih Getachew as one to watch at this year s Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon. The young Ethiopian made his debut at the classic distance in the German city of Cologne in 2012 when he claimed second place in an impressive debut time of 2:07:39. The following year he returned to German soil to compete in the Hamburg Marathon and again he claimed silver, bettering his own personal best by four seconds coming home in 2:07:35. His biggest marathon challenge came in April last year when he competed alongside Kenenisa Bekele on a day when his legendary compatriot made a winning debut and set a new course record in the Paris Marathon. Limenih also had reason to celebrate with yet another runners-up spot and a new personal best of 2:06:49. He also has a half marathon personal best of 1:02:22, set in Addis Ababa in February He made a solid improvement in only his second marathon in running 2:07:10 for fourth place in Frankfurt last October. That was barely nine months after his marathon debut in January 2014 when Tebalu finished second in Marrakech in 2:08:20. In a busy year, he was third in the traditionally high quality Berlin BIG 25 in May, clocking 1:13:09 for the rarely run distance. His best for a half marathon may not initially catch the eye, but the 61:34 was set at altitude in winning the Ethiopian national title in February

30 30 ELITE RUNNERS ELITE MEN BIOGRAPHIES Belay Asefa (Ethiopia) Born: 17 June, 1992 (22 years) Marathon Best: 2:07:11 (4th - Hamburg, 2014) Deribe Roba (Ethiopia) Born: 26 September, 1988 Marathon Best: 2:07:16 (5th - Frankfurt, 2014) Ezekiel Chebii (Kenya) Born: 3 January, 1991 (24 years) Marathon Best: 2:09:15 (1st - Madrid, 2014) Belay made an impressive improvement on his marathon best in Hamburg last May. His fourth place in 2:07:11 was over two and a half minutes faster than his previous fastest time, set in finishing third at the Eindhoven race in the Netherlands in October This is a rate of improvement which the fast Dubai course has the potential to accelerate still further. His half marathon best is 60:59, set in winning the Lake Maggiore event at Verbania in Italy in 2012, the same year in which he finished eleventh in the World Half Marathon Championships. The year of 2014 began in fine style for Deribe Roba, almost a year to the day before he runs in Dubai. He won the Marrakech Marathon in Morocco in 2:08:04, finishing 16 seconds clear of compatriot and Dubai rival Tebalu Zawude. He continued a consistent marathon programme in 2014, running his fastest ever for 2:07:16 and fifth place in Frankfurt last October. Deribe Roba has shown he can cope with adverse conditions, finishing third in a windy and typically humid Hong Kong Marathon in 2013 with 2:14:37. Ezekiel Chebii is likely to be the Kenyan standard bearer in his country s attempt to break the Ethiopian domination in Dubai. The 24 year-old has some way to go before establishing himself among the Kenyan elite but he has shown signs of early promise. First came fine results over 10km and especially the half marathon. In 2012 he ran 59:22 in Berlin to break the hour for the first time, improving to 59:05 a course record in Lille the same year. When he finally ran his marathon debut in Madrid last spring he started his career at the classic distance in style. Chebii won the race, clocked a course record of 2:09:15 and became the first athlete in this traditional race to run a sub 2:10 time. Dubai will now be his second marathon. STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON 2015

31 31 ELITE RUNNERS ELITE MEN BIOGRAPHIES Mule Wasihum (Ethiopia) Born: 1993 Marathon Debutant Mule Wasihum is another Ethiopian debutant who looks as if he could produce a strong performance in Dubai. The young runner has collected a couple of fine victories on French roads in the past two years. In 2013 Wasihum went to Europe for the first time - in September he won the Paris to Versailles race and four weeks later took the classic 20k from Marseille to Cassis. With 400 metres to go he was back in third position, but Wasihum sprinted hard and crossed the line winning in 60:09. His most prestigious victory also came in France, winning the Paris Half Marathon with a personal best of 60:08 in March Among those he left trailing were Kenya s Mike Kigen and Olympic Marathon Champion Stephen Kiprotich from Uganda.

33 33 ELITE RUNNERS ELITE WOMEN BIOGRAPHIES Aselefech Mergia (Ethiopia) Born: 23 January, 1985 (30 years) Marathon Best: 2:19:31 (1st - Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon, 2012) Lucy Kabuu (Kenya) Born: 24 March, 1984 (30 years) Marathon Best: 2:19:34 (2nd - Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon, 2012) Meselech Melkamu (Ethiopia) Born: 27 April, 1985 (29 years) Marathon Best: 2:21:01 (1st - Frankfurt, 2012) Aselefech Mergia is the course record holder of the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon. In 2012 she won Dubai for the second time in a row, taking a highly competitive race by just three seconds in 2:19:31. Two other women ran sub 2:20 in what was the best women s race in the event s history. Mergia s winning time was an Ethiopian record and ensured the bronze medallist from the 2009 World Championships Marathon won a place in the national team for the Olympic Marathon in However, London brought disappointment with 42nd place in her last marathon before taking maternity leave. Mergia returned to racing in 2014, but, not surprisingly, was short of her usual high standards at both 10k and half marathon. She set last October s Frankfurt Marathon as a target to resume her marathon career but withdrew feeling she hadn t been able to regain her best in training. Three months later, Dubai could be perfect timing to display talents to the full and on the day she celebrates her 30th birthday. After an early career marked by impressive progression, Lucy Kabuu announced herself as a marathon contender when she finished runner-up at her debut in Dubai in To break the 2:20 set her among an elite group of women to have achieved that landmark. While she has been highly placed in subsequent races, including third in Tokyo in February 2014 with 2:24:16, Kabuu has still to equal her debut in Dubai. Fifth place in London and third in Chicago in 2012 showed she can compete with the best and she returns to Dubai in pursuit of a first major marathon victory. Earlier she proved her talent on the track, finishing seventh in the Olympic 10,000m in 2008 and she credits her teenage years, studying and running at the Yamada High School in Aomori, northern Japan, as a major factor in her development. Meselech Melkamu ran a superb marathon debut in Frankfurt 2012, clocking 2:21:01 despite almost freezing conditions - at the time, the third fastest debut ever. She is the African 10,000m record holder with 29:53.80 and this speed on the track suggests potential for running yet faster in the marathon. In future I want to run marathon times that are as good as at 10,000m, she says. Meselech was second in Dubai in 2014 with a time of 2:25:23 and then fifth in Boston in 2:21:28. Meselech has five siblings, and her father was a marathon runner in the 1960s. She left school after 10th grade and moved to Addis Ababa where she was offered a place in a youth team by the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation Club.

Duliba made the headlines with victory on her marathon debut, winning the Los Angeles title in 2:26:08 in March, The Californian race is unique in offering women runners a head start over the men and Duliba finished more than the designated 18 minutes, 35 seconds ahead of the first man home, carrying off the bonus money for The Gender Challenge. She broke her own national record with 2:23:44 for fourth place in a high quality Chicago Marathon seven months later and the runner from Minsk continued her improvement in 2014, taking more than two minutes off her time in running 2:21:29 to finish sixth in Boston in April, although the Boston course is not valid for official records. She again performed well to finish second in Toronto in 2:24:43 last October. Askale return to the scene of her 2007 Dubai triumph (2:27:19) albeit running over a different course. As well as the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon, the experienced Ethiopian who has won marathon titles in Paris (2007) and Milan (2006). In Berlin, she achieved her best time so far with second place in 2:21:31 in She had already tasted success there in 2005 when Askale was third in 2:28:27. Her most notable achievement elsewhere was third in London in 2010, clocking 2:24:39 in what is consistently one of the most high quality marathons on the circuit. In 2014 she had a relatively quiet year in the marathon, contesting one event in which she finished sixth in 2:39:09 in Warsaw in April. Winning Dubai in 2010 is far from the only marathon title on her CV. On that occasion she showed what a tenacious competitor she is, beating compatriot Aberu Shewaye in the home straight. Mamitu won both Houston in January of 2011 and then Frankfurt in October of the same year. The triumph in Frankfurt remains her fastest time of 2:21:59. She is noted for her consistency was well as victories, finishing in the top five in all but one of her ten marathons. She should feel at home in Dubai since apart from the 2010 victory in 2:24:18, she finished ninth in a time only six seconds slower two years later. Her only marathon of 2014 was three months prior to Dubai when she took fourth place in 2:29:35 in Shanghai. STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON 2015

Atsede set her fastest time in winning Chicago with 2:22:03 in 2012 and victories on that flat and fast course are hard earned against strong opposition. That was the second of her Chicago wins, having triumphed there in She can match that North American double with successive victories in Paris, beginning in 2009 with 2:24:42 and improving by 38 seconds the following year. A picture emerges of a consistent performer with a strong list of titles to her credit but seeking the fast time to complement these achievements. Dubai should be the perfect setting for such an attempt marked a breakthrough when she won the Stramilano Half Marathon in Italy and earned a bronze medal at the World Half Marathon Championships, setting her current personal best of 67:39. She focused on the full marathon afterwards and produced a startling debut with a second place in Dubai 2010 and victories in Rotterdam and Berlin the same year. The summer heat of the World Championships in Daegu 2011 and Moscow 2013 didn t suit her and she finished 12th and 13th respectively. Her biggest success so far came in 2012 when she won the Berlin Marathon for the second time and set her personal best of 2:20:30 and last autumn she beat a strong field in the Frankfurt Marathon to win in 2:22:21. Her training group in Addis Ababa includes Tirfi Tsegaye, who won the Berlin Marathon last September, and Feyse Tadese, who came second in Berlin. Tadelech Bekele could well be among the next wave of great Ethiopian runners. She achieved a remarkable result when on her debut at the distance in Berlin last September, she ran 2:23:02 for fourth place. Yet there could be more in store since her personal best at 10k is especially impressive - she clocked 30:38 for second place at the Berlin Grand 10 in 2013, the seventh fastest performance of all time. Winner of the Berlin Half Marathon last year, this rate of improvement could be accelerated in Dubai.

Her win in 2014 was, to some extent, a surprise as while Mulu was an established marathoner others had higher profiles and were regarded as likely favourites. She emerged triumphant with 2:25:01 in what proved to be an unbeaten year for the Ethiopian, also winning in Daegu and Toronto. In South Korea she ran 2:25:23 and then a personal best of 2:23:15 in Canada in October. It s been a long road since her marathon debut in 2003 and a hardly headlinegrabbing 2:43:30 in Pyongyang, North Korea. Five years later, she broke 2:30. After winning the Mumbai title in 2:30:04, she made the breakthrough in Toronto with 2:29:06 in Last year s third place finisher in Dubai makes a prompt return to the Emirates in pursuit of her seventh marathon title. Her chief success so far has been victory in New York in 2011 and the time of 2:23:15 remains her personal best. Firehiwot has made a habit of winning in Rome, completing a consecutive hat-trick of victories in She completed a busy marathon schedule last year with seventh place in New York in November; this was after her run in Dubai and then victory in Prague in May. The latter performance was 2:23:34, only 19 seconds outside her personal best. The bronze medallist in the European Championship Marathon in 2010 knows Dubai well: she broke her own Swedish record here in 2011 and will be racing in Dubai for the fifth time - her last appearance was 2013 when the Kenyan-born runner finished seventh in 2:26:05. Although she hasn t threatened to improve on her own national record since the breakthrough in Dubai, Andersson has maintained her reputation as a solid championship performer in particular: in addition to her European bronze medal, she was seventh in the 2011 World Championship Marathon and 18th in the London Olympics. As to how a Kenyan comes to have a Swedish surname, the sport of orienteering holds the answer. Isabellah became interested at home in Kenya, travelled to Sweden to learn more and met Lars Andersson, who is now her husband and coach. On the last Sunday in September she attacked the 2:20 barrier in Berlin and after going through halfway in 69:57 her fastest for the distance she faded after 25k and finished fifth. At least she had the consolation that her 2:25:02 was the second fastest of her career, just over a minute slower than her runnerup spot in Rotterdam in She made her debut in Dubai in 2013, clocking 2:27:08 and her recent form suggests a big improvement can be expected. Sultan Haydar returns to the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon where she placed tenth with 2:27:54 a year ago. The Ethiopian-born athlete had every hope for a higher finishing position, given her pedigree as the Turkish record holder. Haydar switched from track to the roads in 2011 and after a half marathon time of 70:02, she ran her marathon debut in Istanbul in November While this ended unspectacular with a seventh place finish in 2:35:06, she made a huge improvement half a year later. In April 2012 Haydar finished second in Paris with a Turkish record of 2:25:09 that still stands today. She earned selection for the Olympics in London 2012, but finished a disappointing 71st. There were mixed fortunes for her in Taking third places in Rome and Istanbul, Haydar dropped out of the World Championship Marathon in Moscow in sweltering temperatures. Haydar has not competed since Dubai a year ago. Gladys Cherono s marathon debut has been eagerly awaited, especially since she won the World Half Marathon title in The anticipation has also been heightened by her performances on track and road, in particular over the past three years where the Kenyan s performances have been world-class. She became the first woman to take gold medals at both 5,000 and 10,000m in the African Championships in 2012 and in 2013 Cherono won the Prague Half Marathon with a personal best of 66:48, which currently makes her the tenth fastest half marathon runner of all time (discounting times run on non-record eligible courses). In the same year she won the silver medal in the 10,000m World Championships in Moscow. Cherono, who holds a fine 10,000m PB of 30:29.23, planned to make her marathon debut in Berlin but an injury in the build-up forced her to withdraw and the German city s loss is certainly Dubai s gain as she prepares for January 23.
