Like most South American countries, Ecuador loves its sports. In 1960, rookie journalist and athlete, Jorge Rivadeneira was given the task to create a sports event as a gift from Últimas Noticias, El Comerio s evening newspaper, to the city of Quito. This is how today s Quito Últimas Noticias 15K was born; and 51 years later, Senor Rivadeneira still attends the event annually. With 1.7 million residents, Quito is located about 20 Km south of the Equator at 2,850 meters (9,350 feet) above sea level. The hilly 15 Km run has grown into the largest road race in Ecuador with well over 15,000 participants, and the event is the pride of the country highlighting the best of Quito and its people. The race is televised throughout Ecuador and many other Latin American countries. In 2006, El Comercio IPICO SPORTS LAUNCHES GPRS FUNCTIONALITY IPICO Sports is pleased to introduce TimeLink, a new product offering that provides cellular communications functionality for the IPICO Sports Elite Reader. TimeLink utilizes a combination of cellular data services and Virtual Private Networking (VPN) to provide a method for event timers to remotely access data from IPICO Sports Elite Readers in realtime from any location where cellular data access and/or Internet access is available. Unhappy with the expense and quality of the results and services in 2006 and 2007, González charged Pablo Cevallos, Manager of Technology for El Comercio, with finding an alternative that would allow the organization to electronically time their own event directly. Given the event s national visibility and El Comercio s high standards, González recommended Cevallos to contact Arturo Linaldi, IPICO Sports Director of Business Development to Latin America. Through his many years of working with the Últimas Noticias 15K as an athlete representative, Linaldi had developed a trusted relationship with González and the race committee. In July 2007, Cevallos viewed IPICO Sports systems in use at a running event in San Antonio, Texas, timed by Chuck Campbell an early IPICO Sports adopter. After witnessing the ease of setup and data collection, Cevallos was pretty sure he had found the answer for Últimas Noticias 15K timing needs. Soon after the race started, a rain storm buried the IPICO Sports Antenna Mats under inches of water. The IPICO Sports systems continued working flawlessly, and Cevallos was absolutely certain of his recommendation. In March 2008, Grupo El Comercio purchased five IPICO Sports Elite Reader Systems and 15,000 Shoe Tags. A few weeks later, the newspaper organization contracted for training services, and Larry Hicks, IPICO Sports Technical Specialist, travelled to Quito to provide training to Pablo Cevallos and his staff on the use of IPICO Sports technology. On June 1, 2008, novices Cevallos and crew timed the 10,000 participants in 48 th running of the Quito Últimas Noticias 15K. As Cevallos commented soon after the event, the race was great; all of the systems functioned perfectly. Thank you for your support and patience with us all this time. It also launched Pablo Cevallos into a new career. (see next story) For more information, visit CRONOPRO - PABLO CEVALLOS Experience with IPICO Sports at Quito Últimas Noticias 15K helps start new career Pablo Cevallos worked for Grupo El Comercio for 18 years rising to the position of Director of Technology. After the successful implementation of IPICO Sports at the 2008 Quito Últimas Noticias 15Km, many other event organizers throughout Ecuador began contacting Cevallos for timing services. Grupo El Comercio publishes newspapers and wasn t interested in creating a sports timing business. Cevallos trip to San Antonio had planted a seed. Cevallos envisioned the possibilities of creating his own timing and service company for several years. In the autumn of 2009, after timing the Últimas Noticias 15K for a second time, Cevallos left Grupo El Comercio and purchased two (2) IPICO Sports Elite Systems and created Cronopro. His company now times 18 to 20 races per year primarily around Quito and the Highlands. These events range in size from 1,000 to 10,000 participants with the average around 2,500 participants. Cevallos has leveraged lessons learned from his experience with the Quito Últimas Noticias 15Km to provide a full range of event consulting/ management services including: event design; database design; race day registration; promotions and web-based advertizing; course design and certification; logistics support; and real-time results to mobile phones. With less than 10% of households having Internet access, Ecuador has one of the highest percentage usage of mobile/smartphones in South America. Cronopro is now Cevallos primary source of income for his family-run business. Cevallos sees great opportunities for IPICO Sports Custom Tags. According to Cevallos, races in Ecuador have relatively low entry fees (USD 10 per participant), but event organizers see the value of IPICO Sports Custom Tags for sponsor branding and eliminating postrace retrieval. 4 ALCAR CONGRESS Asociación Latinoamericana de Carreras de Ruta (Association of Latin American Race Directors) meet in Quito, Ecuador Pablo González, Race Director for the Quito Últimas Noticias 15Km, served double-duty hosting the first ALCAR Congress in conjunction with the 51st running of the Últimas Noticias 15K on June 2 and 3. Special guests included Paco Borao, President of AIMS, and Jorge Rivadeneira, Founder of Quito Últimas Noticias 15K. In 2010, Gustavo Orozco, Race Director of the Medellin, Colombia, Half Marathon, hosted a group of Race Directors representing Latin America s most RACE DIRECTORS REPRESENTING MAJOR EVENTS THROUGHOUT LATIN AMERICA AND GUESTS AT THE FIRST ALCAR CONGRESS (PHOTO CREDIT: MARIO MESA, 2001) important running events and affiliated with the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS). The purpose of this meeting was to share knowledge and experiences with the objective to improve the quality of their events. These initial meetings served as the beginning of Asociación Latinoamericana de Carreras de Ruta (ALCAR) (Association of Latin American Race Directors). AIMS membership is not required for ALCAR participation, but events are expected to follow the AIMS minimum standard requirements. 5 IPICO SPORTS SYSTEMS TO TIME 2012 TOKYO MARATHON Japanese Partner plans market expansion IPICO Sports is pleased to announce that The RECS, Inc., a division of Tokyo based R-bies Corporation, will utilize IPICO Sports systems to time the sixth edition of the Tokyo Marathon on February, 26, Since its debut in 2007, the Tokyo Marathon has rapidly grown in both size and significance. In 2010, over 335,000 applicants entered the lottery for 32,000 available positions in the marathon, and 3,000 available positions in the accompanying 10 km race. With the largest disclosed prize purse in Japan, the Tokyo Marathon is an IAAF Gold Label Road Race. The event will also be used as part of the selection process for the members of the 2012 Japanese Olympic Marathon Team. IPICO Sports began working with The RECS, Inc. in In July 2009, The RECS, Inc. expanded its partnership to become responsible for the distribution of IPICO Sports automated tracking and timing solutions for use in the active sports and wellness markets in Japan. The RECS, Inc. has extensively used IPICO Sports systems in many major events throughout Japan over the past few years. Based on this demonstrated success, R-bies Corporation recommended the use of IPICO for the Tokyo Marathon 2012, and then the Tokyo Marathon Foundation accepted the proposal. Douglas returns to a Customer Service and Sales Support role. He serves as the first point of contact for customers. Douglas first tour of duty with IPICO Sports was from March 2008 through December A lifelong native of Central Illinois and graduate of Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois; Douglas felt he needed a change. After spending 15 months working as a Training Specialist for a health care software company in Madison, Wisconsin; Douglas began to regret leaving IPICO Sports. I missed our customers and the interaction with them, he explains for his return. I especially enjoy the nature of event-based activities.
