1 2017 TRACK & FIELD Boys Head Coach: Mr. Elman Girls Head Coach: Ms. Randle ex Assistant Boys Coach: Mrs. Reed ex Assistant Girls Coach: Mrs. Knighton Check for the latest info at: h1p://vikingtrack.weebly.com Eligibility: Being a part of an athletic team is a privilege offered to any student who is capable of meeting the physical, academic, and behavioral requirements. Parents and athletes should review the extracurricular code of conduct sheet together (located at the end of this packet). Athletes should be aware that their conduct is being evaluated by the school district s administrators, teachers, coaches, chaperones, and bus drivers. After the 3rd time an athlete is ineligible due to academic or behavioral reasons, he/she will be removed from the team. Practices: Practice days and end times are noted on the attached calendar. Athletes should be picked up outside the Viking gym entrance on practice days. There will be no phones available in the gym to call for a ride. After three instances where an athlete is still waiting for a ride 15 minutes late, you may be asked to forfeit your place on the team. If you miss a practice, it will only be excused due to illness, another school activity, or with a doctor s note. For 1st and 2nd unexcused absences, the athlete will sit out the next meet. After 3, the athlete will be removed from the team. In the event of rain, students should listen for announcements to find out about practice that day. Please let your coach know in person or by if you will not be at practice, even if you are absent from school that day. Meets: Athletes will stay after school and be bused to all meets. Meets usually begin between 4:00 and 4:30, but time can vary depending on the dismissal times of the participating schools and when the teams all arrive. You will be bused back to Viking from all meets. You may sign out and leave with a parent at the site of the meet or be picked up at Viking after the meet (approximately 6:00 6:30). Signing out means you need to tell one of the four coaches that you are leaving. In order to go home with another parent, you must have written permission from your own parent. Additionally, due to the limited number of spots in the meet lineups, it is possible that not everyone will attend all of the meets on the schedule. During practice, the athletes will compete with each other for those spots. Ability, attitude, and attendance will be used to determine who will be competing in the meets. If you know there is a meet that you cannot attend because of another commitment, please let your coach know in person or by , even if you are absent from school that day. Take special notice of the dates of the conference and sectional meets, as we cannot change the lineups of those meets at the last minute. You should bring water and snacks to each meet so you have energy to compete. A banana and a granola bar would be a suitable snack to eat after school or when you arrive at the track. Do not bring valuables and leave them in your bag, which may be unsupervised. ipads should be left in your school locker or locked up in a gym locker when possible. If your parents are coming to the meet and you need to bring it home, hand them your ipad upon arrival. The decision to cancel a meet because of the weather will often not be made until 2:00 PM or later because cancelled meets are very rarely rescheduled. Admission to the meets is free except for, Sectional, and State, which charge to get in.
2 Uniforms: All participants must wear a school-issued shirt during meets. Everyone will receive a Viking singlet (shirt). You also need to wear black shorts. They can be your P.E. shorts, your own black shorts, or you may check-out a pair of black shorts for the season. You will also be issued a Viking warm-up suit with jacket and pants. Because the uniforms are identical, it is strongly recommended that you attach some masking tape inside each piece with your name on it. You will be charged for the replacement of any part of YOUR uniform that is not returned at the end of the season. This means if you return someone else s, theirs gets checked-in but yours is still missing. You may wear a black shirt or leggings under your uniform to keep warm. Additionally, some of the meets get to be very cold as the sun sets. Bring extra clothes including hat and gloves to keep warm! Please wash your jacket and pants before returning them at the end of the season. We will wash all the shirts and shorts when they are turned in. Return you uniform to your coach as soon as your season is over. Return it BEFORE Awards Night and receive candy! If your uniform doesn t get turned in on time, you will miss end of the year activities! Shoes: Either running shoes or cross-trainers are suitable for practice and for meets. You may wish to purchase spikes if you are a sprinter, however this is not a requirement. Spikes should be pyramid style only and no longer than 1/4 inch. Please do not wear basketball, wrestling, or other shoes that are not suitable for running. If you would like to be professionally fitted for running shoes or spikes, visit The Runner s Edge in Libertyville. Tell them you are on the Viking Track Team for 10% off your purchase. Injuries: It is normal for muscles to get sore after tough workouts, and this can usually be treated by applying ice in 15-minute increments for a few hours. If more serious injuries occur such as sore joints, then you may want to visit a doctor or physical therapist. We are working with Accelerated Rehab Centers to provide care to our athletes who get injured while participating in school sports. They have several offices in the Gurnee/Waukegan area, including at each campus of Warren Township High School. If you would like to be examined by one of their specialists, call them at and they will let you know where you can see a physical therapist. Postseason: Students will be competing at each regular meet to earn the privilege of going to the and Sectional meets. Start times of these meets will be communicated a few days prior. At these meets, we may only enter two students and one relay per grade level in each event. This means that some students will not be able to participate in these meets and their final meet will be on 4/28. First place finishers in every event at the Sectional Meet, as well as those who meet the qualifying standards, will qualify for the State Finals in East Peoria, IL. The cost of hotel room and transportation to the State Finals are not provided by the school. However, qualifying for the State Finals is quite an honor, and the coaches will assist in making arrangements for all students who qualify. Awards Night: All athletes who participated in at least one meet should join us for Awards Night at Viking School on Thursday, May 25 th at 6pm. You will receive a certificate of accomplishment, any ribbons or other awards you have earned, team photos if you ordered them, and of course, cake. We will also watch the highlight movie of the season. Picture Day: Track Picture day will be on Friday, April 28th at Viking before we travel to a meet. Athletes will be given a picture form at practice. If you wish to order pictures, you should bring the form on picture day and hand it to the photographer. Do not return your picture form to your coach.

4 VIKING TRACK & FIELD GUIDE Dear Parents and Students, The rules of track can be complicated as to the order and rules of events, and the number and kind of events an athlete may participate in at the middle school level. We have created this information sheet in order to help explain the rules to students and parents who may be new to track & field. Teams There are four teams in track: 8th grade boys, 8th grade girls, 7th grade boys, and 7th grade girls. The 6th and 7th grade are combined and run as one team at the 7th grade level. There is not a separate 6th grade level as there was in cross-country. Additionally, Viking School and River Trail School are combined to form one set of teams. Mr. Elman is the head coach of the boys team and is in charge of the boys line-ups. Ms. Randle is the head coach of the girls team and is in charge of the girls line-ups. Mrs. Reed works with the distance runners and is the assistant boys coach. Mrs. Knighton works with the throwers and is the assistant girls coach. All of our coaches are experienced with each event and can help an athlete with any event. Events There are 13 different events in middle school track & field. They are divided into track events and field events. A student may only participate in up to four events at one meet. The only limitation is that a student cannot compete in the 4x100 relay and 4x200 relay at the same meet. Running Events These events are run on the track, one event at a time, usually in the order listed below. If the host school is using a sound system, they will typically announce when the event is coming up. 1 st call means participants should be aware that their event is approaching. 2 nd call means start heading towards the bullpen or starting line. 3 rd call means you should be at the bullpen or starting line waiting for instructions. Each event is run with the 7 th grade girls first, followed by 8 th grade girls, 7 th grade boys, and then 8 th grade boys. Track Dimensions: A regulation high school track is 400 meters around (in the first lane). In races longer than 100 meters, and in relays, athletes use a staggered start to make up for the further difference in the outer lanes. The same line is used for the finish line in all events. A rare exception is that the 100 meter dash and hurdle races can be run in the opposite direction if there are high winds blowing against the starting line. Hurdles: Ten hurdles are set at equal intervals along the straightaway. The girls hurdle race is 100 meters, and the boys hurdle race is 110 meters. 100 Meter Dash: A race down the straightaway Meter Run (mile): This race starts at the finish line. Usually the starting line is curved, known as a waterfall, so that the participants in the inner lanes don t have an advantage. Participants may cut-in to the inner lanes right away, as long as they are two steps ahead of someone and will not cut them off. They run 4 laps around the track. The other option for this starting line is called alleys, which is a staggered start of groups of two lanes. In an alley start, the runners may not cut in until they reach the cut-in line at the start of the next straightaway. 4x200 Meter Relay (800 M. Relay): Four participants each run 200 meters (1/2 of the track) while passing a baton to the next runner within the exchange zone. 4x100 Meter Relay (400 M. Relay): Four participants each run 100 meters (1/4 of the track) while passing a baton to the next runner within the exchange zone. 400 Meter Dash: 1 lap around the track. 200 Meter Dash: A race from halfway around the track to the finish line. 800 Meter Run: 2 laps around the track. The waterfall or alley start is used for this race. 4x400 Meter Relay: (1600 M. Relay): Four participants each run 400 meters (1 lap) while passing a baton to the next runner. 1st runner stays in his/her lane. The 2 nd runner cuts in towards lane 1, once he/she crosses the cut-in mark/cone at the start of the straightaway on the far side of the track. 3rd & 4th runners then run in or near lane 1.
5 Field Events These four events are typically run at the same time as the track events and they last for the duration of the meet. Athletes in a field event should report to the field event at the start of the meet. When it is time for them to participate in a track event, they should check out from the field event by telling the person running it that they need to go to a track event. When their track event is over, they should return to the field event to finish it. Shot put: This usually takes place at one end of the track or outside the track in a baseball field. Participants throw (put) a 4-kilogram ball (shot) as far as they can. They get three chances to throw and their furthest throw is compared with other participants throws. Discus: This usually takes place in a baseball field outside the track area. Participants throw a 1-kilogram disc as far as they can. They get three chances to throw, and their furthest throw is compared with other participants throws. High jump: This usually takes place inside of the track. Participants jump over a bar placed between two standards, without knocking the bar down. There are various ways to jump, but you must jump off of one foot. The starting height of the bar is determined by the host school. The bar is moved progressively higher, two inches at a time. Each participant gets three attempts at each height. Once a height is cleared, the participant s misses resets to zero for the next height. The winner is the participant who clears the highest bar height. If there is a tie, then the previous height or total number of attempts is considered to break a tie. Long Jump: This usually takes place behind the bleachers, but can be elsewhere inside or outside of the running track. Participants sprint down the runway and leap off of a wooden board, jumping into a sand pit. The foot should hit as close to the front of the board as possible. They get three chances to jump, and their furthest jump is compared with other participants jumps. If any part of the foot passes the front of the board, that attempt is scratched. Scoring: At dual meets (2 teams), the 1 st place winner of every individual event earns 5 points, 2 nd place earns 3 points, and 3 rd place earns 1 point. In relays, only 1 st place is awarded. At triangular meets (3 teams), four places are awarded and the points are In relays, 1 st and 2 nd places are awarded. When there are more teams, such as at the conference and sectional meets, the number of places usually equals the number of lanes on the track (6 or 8), with 1 st place earning 10 points. The team that earns the most points wins the meet. Prelims, Semis, and Finals: At large meets like, Sectional, and State, there are several heats of each race and all times are compared to determine the winners. In the fastest events however, it is believed that competitors will run faster if they are up against other fast competitors. Therefore, the top 2 or 3 in each heat of the 100 meter dash and hurdles are called back to compete against each other in 1 or 2 additional heats. These successive heats are prelims, semis, and finals. At these large meets, there are also final flights of the long jump, discus, and shot put, where the top competitors will get 2 additional attempts,. Then all 5 attempts will be compared to decide overall place. We hope this information helps you to understand the track team and season better.
