The 6 th Edition Winter The Long Island Road Runners PO Box 232 East Meadow, New York Club Hotline: As always, this newsletter is dedicated to the memories of Jack Dowling, Co-Founder and Past President, and Eunice Harris, Secretary/Treasurer. 1

FRED HASLETT PRESIDENT LONG ISLAND ROADRUNNERS President s Message December 2011 Here we are again; it s the end of the year. Where did the time go? I know we always hear people say that but it seems time is going by faster these days. There comes a time in life when we seem to reflect more on our lives and those close to us, and what they mean. 2

Running has been a big part of my life for many years, and what it has given me is priceless. Most of the things I have experienced have been wonderful. Being part of the LIRRC race team, we have put on hundreds of races over the years always doing our best to give runners what we feel that we would want in are race if we ran in it, A friendly, low cost, fun event. And with the help of quite a few talented people, we have accomplished that. In running in more races than I could ever remember over the years, and being in Eisenhower Park almost every week, I have met so many friends that I would never have met otherwise. And I am richer for it. Running is such an enriching sport, bringing people from different walks of life together by a common thread, their love of running. How lucky are we? How lucky am I. Although this may sound like someone reflecting on his life at the end of running, it is certainly anything but the end. There is much to look forward to. We are looking forward to a terrific 2012, starting with our New Year s Day 5 Mile Hangover Run on Sunday January 1 st. Last year 200 hardy souls came down to kick off the New Year right. A new year is approaching, and with that brings hope for better days. In giving thanks, I always hesitate to name names because of the fear of forgetting someone, but here goes. 3

Thanks go out to Bob Patterson (technical guru/webmeister), Colin Harris, Peter Cirona, Joyce Patterson, Kathy Agricola, Juan Oliveras, Sally Robison for being so dedicated in helping to put on race after race. And thanks to our other board members Adriana Staiano (team co-captain), Mike Ogazon (the blaster), Jim Thornton (counsel), and Dave Philippi (big helper). Others who help make us a better club like Kevin Wizbicki (on the bike), Joe Tracy supervising the water stop, always a big relief to see him, Vera Lightfoot, so enthusiastic, Bob McVetty, the straw that stirs the drink, and of course, Dennis Boyd, who is so valuable a friend. And a big thank you to Jim Ferguson, our great newsletter editor, who does such a terrific job writing our newsletter. And also a big thanks to so many others who pitch in here and there for us. As we approach this holiday season, it s a good time to look back, reflect, look forward to a better year, and run. On behalf of the LIRRC, I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe Christmas, Chanukah, and anything else you may celebrate. We ll see you in the park! Fred 4

HEARD & SEEN AROUND THE PARK What male and female running friends have been seen together lately in Eisenhower, looking like a lot more than friends? They make a wonderful couple. Only thing is only one of them is single. CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR RACE TEAMS! Congrats to our race teams, the men s led by captain Juan Oliveras, and our women s team led by co-captains Adriana Staiano and Kathy Agricola. Each finished the year with a very respectable 4 th place finish in the USATF-LI Grand Prix standings. For the women s team, once written off, it was an especially proud finish. And 2012 is shaping up to be a great year for our teams! 5

Wacky weather as early as October 29 th made us think it would be a tough winter season ahead, but no sooner did Thanksgiving come, and 2 days later on November 26th...70 degrees! This is a great race in Utica, New York that I ran last year. It hot & hilly, guaranteed to make you swear while you re running it. I highly recommend this race if you are looking to challenge yourself this year... Time to make a decision on the Long Island Festival of Races! Doing the full or half? Registration is open online now...congratulations to Grant Radtke who was on his way to the Las Vegas Marathon held on Dec. 4th. He did a great job, finishing in 3:41 flat! He has come through big for us in scoring Grand Prix points this year... In the January 2012 Runner s World, the Northport Running Club and Robert Skirkanich get a nice mention. 6

This Month s Pick: The Longest Fall by Lee Krinsky The Longest Fall is more than a running book; it is a book about life. It is a book about the bond that is formed between teammates, especially when dealing with terrible tragedy. Runners and non-runners will both find inspiration in overcoming heartbreak and triumphing over impossible odds. The book is beautifully written and the descriptions of running routes and parks in New York made me feel like I was there. Runner s Resource 11

Fauja Singh earned a spot in the Guinness World Records for his accomplishment. It took Singh more than eight hours to cross the finish line more than six hours after Kenya's Kenneth Mungara won the event for the fourth straight year and he was the last competitor to complete the course. 20 USA Indoor Season Expands With New Madison Square Garden Meet By David Monti November 17, 2011 (c) 2011 Race Results Weekly, all rights reserved NEW YORK (17-Nov) -- The 2012 United States indoor track season expanded with the announcement of a new meeting to be held here on January 28. USA Track and Field (USATF) announced today that the first edition of the U.S. Open would be held in Madison Square Garden, and that double-olympic medalist Bernard Lagat had committed to the meet. The meet, which USATF said would include professional and high school events, keeps elite track and field in the Garden after the controversial decision by the Armory Foundation earlier this year to move the Millrose Games out of that venue and into the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory about seven miles north of the Garden in Washington Heights. The Millrose Games, which will be held on February 11 for the 105th time, is not part of USATF's three-meet Visa Championship Series, while the U.S. Open, New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston (Feb. 4), and USA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque (Feb ) are. Lagat, 36, won the Wanamaker Mile when the Millrose Games were at Madison Square Garden a record eight times. The USATF press release sent today carefully avoids any mention of either the Wanamaker Mile or the Millrose Games, but credits Lagat as having "won eight 1-mile races in the Garden." "Madison Square Garden feels like home to me, and I am so happy to be coming back in 2012," Lagat said through a statement. In holding the U.S. Open, USATF will face the same problems they did when they funded the Millrose Games at the Garden: a quirky 145.5m banked track which makes running fast times all but impossible, trying to fill over 16,000 seats, and finding sponsorship to offset some of the estimated "$1 million a year" the New York Times said it cost to stage the meet at the Garden. 20

Nonetheless, USATF interim CEO Mike McNees sounded upbeat about the new meet. "This will be a tightly scheduled meet featuring the 'best of the best' from past Garden meets while providing a fitting kick-off to the 2012 Olympic year," he said through the release. "We are excited about our partnership with The Garden and are especially glad that everyone from kids to families to VIPs will be able to access the meet." Ray Flynn, who directs the Millrose Games, said he was glad to see the USA indoor season grow, although it is still just a fraction of the size it was when Flynn competed as a miler in the 1980's. At that time, Flynn said, athletes would compete multiple times in the same week. "We welcome having another meet in New York," Flynn said in a brief telephone interview. "It is exciting to expand the indoor season. It could only help prepare the athletes for better performances at the Millrose Games." USATF said that the U.S. Open would be televised from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on ESPN. Note: David Monti does professional athlete consulting for the NYRR which is sponsoring both miles at the Millrose Games. 21

The Question for the OCTOBER EDITION was. Who was the first Wisconsin runner to break the 4 minute mile, and what was his time? The Answer.STEVE LACY (3:59.6) This month s question "Who was the first woman to win 4 gold medals in one Olympics?" 22

LIRRC SPOTLIGHTS.. Marty Schimmele Marty Schimmele is a Long Island favorite just look at how many races he does, and it s easy to see why he is so well known. I met him at the LIRRC Wednesday Night Series years ago. Marty and I won our age groups in the Miles for Melanoma 5K this year. That was normal for Marty, but I was ecstatic. Marty than shared his opinion about the course he was convinced it was short! When asked to be a part of this edition, Marty did not hesitate. If there wasn t a drug called Gleevec, I wouldn t be running..when you see the Team In Training shirts at races, it is their efforts that helped find these life saving drugs. Marty did a half marathon back in 2002 and raised over $2500.for the Leukemia Society, for which he is very proud. 23

Marty runs about 25 miles a week, and although he has no major races planned, he is a big fan of running right here on Long Island. His favorite races are the Firecracker 5K in Massapequa, and the Ocean to Sound Relay, and the NYS Summer and Winter Series. As a general rule, he sticks to the 5 and 10k s. Older runners, the guys & gals in their 70 s and 80 s are favorites of Marty, and provide inspiration to us all. We wish Marty all the luck in the world as he continues on the courses and trails right here on Long Island, and good luck to anyone trying to keep up with him! 24

Let us not forget our men and women in uniform, and let us always let them know that they are appreciated for the sacrifices they and their families make for us. What can we do to show our support our men and women in uniform? There are many ways. We have decided to partner with State Senator Dean Skelos in the Cell Phones for Soldiers program. Each week at our races, a collection box will be available to collect old cell phones. Our soldier s calls home are not free, even from Iraq and Afghanistan, and especially from their coming and going stays in Kuwait. They can pay as much as $5 per minute to call loved ones. 31 LIRRC SPOTLIGHTS.. In a change from our usual format, Eva Casale submitted an essay that is moving, heartfelt, and inspirational. Being a Living Donor. 5 Year Anniversary A profoundly rewarding experience so life changing that it is quite difficult... almost impossible to put into words. Here is the story of how, on October 10, 2006, I became a kidney donor to a stranger. In March of 2006 I was driving to work one morning mindlessly listening to my usual news radio show. Suddenly, I was more alert and attentive to a particular story. It was an interview with a family that was looking for a kidney donor for their dad. 31

This story touched me deeply and it is hard to explain how and why but something was telling me that I could help this man. I decided, that day, that minute, to follow up on the story and see what I could do. As it turned out, I was the same blood type and a very good match for him. On October 10, the surgery was performed and my kidney was given to this very kind and gentle man. The doctors told me that the kidney started working for him within minutes even before they finished completing the surgery. To hear someone tell you this that you were able to truly help another person you just can t imagine the emotions that I felt and still do today. This man is like a brother to me. He is now my family. His wife, children, and grandchildren are all my family. There is a very deep loving bond between us all. By sharing my experience, I hope that others may consider in time of need for a close friend, a family member, or a stranger to become a living donor. 32

This experience of being a living donor has not changed my health or put any limitations on the way I live. It has changed my outlook on life. In fact, it has inspired me to continue to help others and to become a better person and a better runner! Before 2006, I would run 1 or 2 marathons a year and many shorter races. Since October 2006, I ve run over 24 marathons, including 12 ultras, and many other races. I think the gift of helping others is like food for the soul. It nourishes us to be better people, to strive harder and go further and for us runners, to push ourselves to limits we never thought possible. In the beginning, I mentioned life changing this is the story of how my life has changed, and has been profoundly rewarded beyond mere words. Eva L. Casale 33

Kangaroo knocks out jogger David Striegl on Mt Ainslie in Canberra EVEN after years playing football, ACT local David Striegl had never got into a fight - until he was knocked out cold by a rogue kangaroo. Mr Striegl, 25, was running up Canberra's Mount Ainslie during his lunchbreak yesterday and did not think twice when he spotted one of the resident roos nearby. The bushland reserve in the nation's capital is popular with joggers and cyclists, and assaults by the marsupials who share the mountain are rare.mr Striegl was knocked unconscious and remembers little about the attack. "I turned around and before I knew it, it took a swipe at my face," he said. A passing motorist roused the dazed and bloody victim and took him to hospital. After X-rays and a tetanus shot he was able to go home with only a black eye to show for the encounter. But he has now become something of legend at his corporate real estate office, where he returned to work the next day to discover he had a new nickname - "Skippy". "I didn't want to wait til Monday to face the music," he said. "The main thing they've been asking is whether I got one (punch) back on the roo. "I can't even say that, because one punch and it put me to the floor. All my years of playing football and never a fight, and then I have a fight with a kangaroo." So will Mr Striegl be running back to the area any time soon and risk a second round? "Yeah, a few guys from work said they might come with me though," he laughed.. Reprinted from news.com/au 43

UNTIL NEXT TIME "The battles that count aren't the ones for gold medals. The struggles within yourself - the invisible, inevitable battles inside all of us - that's where it's at. -Jesse Owens "If the hill has its own name, then it's probably pretty tough hill." - Marty Stern "It's very hard in the beginning to understand that the whole idea is not to beat the other runners. Eventually you learn that the competition is against the little voice inside you that wants you to quit." - Dr. George Sheehan 44

Last year I entered the New York City Marathon. I finished last. It was embarrassing. And the guy who was in front of me, second to last, was making fun of me. He said, "Hey buddy, how does it feel to be last?" I replied: "Do you want to know?" and I dropped out. - from MarathonPal.com At some point, you must ask yourself why you are a member of a club. You may not choose to actively fundraise or coach or volunteer. You may choose not to contribute to a newsletter. Hell, you don t even have to visit the club s website or the Facebook page. But the club is supposed to be about camaraderie and teamwork. When we can t get a team together in a relay, or enough people interested to attend a holiday party, I think there s a problem. I agree that running s the thing, but we can do that on our own. - Jim Ferguson 45
