4 1 INTRODUCTION TOUR OF ANCHORAGE RACE BIBLE 2018 Welcome to the 2018 Tour of Anchorage! We are so happy that you have decided to participate and hope that you have a safe and fun experience! Please read this race bible thoroughly; it should answer most questions and provides details on each individual stage, as well as race rules. Should you have any additional questions, please refer to the race director and/or club chairperson. 5 TOUR OF ANCHORAGE RACE BIBLE IMPORTANT DETAILS On-site registration will only be available for all stages except for the stage 1 time trial. Participants must register online if they wish to participate in the entire tour, onsite registration will not be available for the entire series. Riders who are not signed up for the entire series will not be eligible for time bonuses or King/Queen of the Mountain points. All racers (even if you are pre-registered) must sign-in at the registration table prior to each stage. Racer sign-in will open 1 ½ hours prior to each event and will close 30 minutes before the start. If you have not signed in at least 30 minutes prior to your event, you risk having your name pulled from the start list. Racer meetings will occur 15 minutes prior to each event. Racers are free to choose their category based on ability level. Racers may not change their category once the event is underway. If you feel that you have selected the wrong category, please contact the race director. Male and female categories that are grouped will be started 30 seconds apart at the beginning of each stage. New for 2018, for stage series, categories with less than five racers will be combined with a similar category for both racing and results. There will be no pre-event bib pickup. We will use our regular 2018 road season bibs, so if you have already participated in the 2018 season, you will not need a new bib for the tour. All racers must wear a bib number at all times while racing, and ensure proper bib placement in order to assist with accurate results and timing (clearly visible on the rider s right hip see photo for example). 4 RACE RULES It is your responsibility to familiarize yourself with and adhere to these rules read them carefully! Failure to follow these rules may result in disqualification from the tour. Bib numbers: Race numbers must be worn at all times, as shown above. Failure to adequately display your bib number may result in inaccurate results (or no result whatsoever!). We will have yellow race leader and polka dot bibs for the General Classification and King/Queen of the Mountains leaders, respectively, in each division; these special bibs will be given out prior to each stage after standings have been determined. Race leader and polka dot bibs are yours to keep, even if the standings change! Sign-in: Racers must sign in at least 30 minutes prior to each event! Failure to do so may result in being excluded from your event. 5

6 TOUR OF ANCHORAGE RACE BIBLE 2018 Combined Categories: Categories of similar ability may be combined for mass start events (stages 2, 4 and 5). Racers may draft and work with any other racers in the group with which they start, and will still be scored within their individual category. Racers may not draft or work with racers from other groups on the road, outside of the group with which they started. Pack Times: The road/circuit races and criterium are considered pack time events. Any gap between groups that is larger than 2 seconds will be considered a gap for timekeeping purposes and the next group will be given a different time. For example: the first pack of 10 riders has a finishing time of 1:15:05, a gap of 30 seconds occurs, and the second pack has 15 riders, all with a finishing time of 1:15:35. Helmets: Helmets must be worn at all times!! This includes before and after events even if you are just riding around the parking lot. Riding without a helmet at any time is grounds for immediate disqualification. Earpieces: Devices with earpieces are not permitted at any time while riding (including before and after racing), during any stage. Earpieces may be worn for trainer warm-ups, but not at any time when your bicycle is in motion. Aerobars: Aerobars are permitted during the stage 1 time trial only. Drafting: Drafting is permitted in any of the mass start events (stages 2, 3, 4, and 5), except as outlined above (drafting off of groups other than the group with which you started is prohibited). Drafting is prohibited in stage 1. Yellow Line: The yellow line rule is in effect for all stages (with the exception of stage 4 ). Riders may not cross the yellow line lane divider at any time. If a painted yellow line is not present, riders must stay as far to the right as possible. This is extremely important to ensure riders safety. Failure to follow this rule may result in disqualification. Support: Support/follow cars will not be provided by the race organizers, and follow cars for individual racers are prohibited. For the stage 4 criterium and stage 5 road race, there will be designated pit areas for spare wheels and other equipment. Outside support is permitted only within these pit areas. Racers may take assistance from teammates or other racers. During the stage 5 road race only, racers may take outside support (food, bottles, clothing, etc.) within the designated feed zone. Accepting a hand-up from a moving vehicle is not permitted in any stage. Free Laps: During the stage 4 criterium only, a racer may be granted a free lap in the case of a mishap or major mechanical problem. Racers must return to the designated pit area under their own power and rejoin the race within one lap to be eligible for the free lap. Racers may not ride their bicycle backwards on the course to reach the pit area. When re-entering the race, racers must re-enter at the back of the group which they were with at the time of the incident. The free lap rule is no longer in effect within three laps of the finish. Inside of three laps to go, racers suffering a mishap or major mechanical problem may not re-enter the race, and will be given the same time as the group they were with at the time of the incident. Neutral Zones: In the stage 1 time trial, 100 meters before and after the turnaround is a neutral zone. Passing is not permitted within the neutral zone. In the stage 5 road race, the feed zone is a neutral zone, except during prime laps and the last lap of the race. Attacking and passing are 6

7 TOUR OF ANCHORAGE RACE BIBLE 2018 not permitted if a racer is clearly attempting to take support within the neutral zone. Please be courteous of your fellow racers, and allow others to collect food and clothing safely. Racers taking support should signal their intention to do so. 5 OTHER DETAILS UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT Unsportsmanlike conduct of any kind will not be tolerated period. When you are on your bicycle, you are a role model for other racers, cyclists, and the club. Be competitive, but be courteous and respectful of others. None of us are getting paid to do this. PROTESTS AND DISPUTES Race officials will not be present on the road with the racers, so racers must be self-governing. All perceived rule violations must be reported within 30 minutes after the race finish. Perceived errors in the results must be reported in a timely manner to the race director after results are posted, and at least one hour before the start of the next stage. Disputes will be resolved by the members of the Arctic Bicycle Club Road Division Committee. 6 COMPETITIONS GENERAL CLASSIFICATION All racers competing for the entire series are eligible for the general classification (GC). Racers must complete each stage to remain in the GC. Racers who cannot complete a stage due to a mishap or major mechanical problem may be given a prorated time, at the race director s discretion, and permitted to advance to the next stage (see also free laps under rules). The GC placing will be based on lowest overall accumulated time, including any time bonuses earned and/or time penalties incurred. The current race leader in each category will receive a yellow bib. KING/QUEEN OF THE MOUNTAINS Racers will earn King/Queen of the Mountains (KOM/QOM) points at locations indicated in the individual stage descriptions. Only GC riders will be eligible for KOM/QOM points. The current KOM/QOM in each category will receive a polka dot bib. TIME BONUSES Time bonuses will be awarded as indicated in the individual stage descriptions. Time bonuses are applied to GC time and do not affect the stage placing. Racers who are relegated or disqualified may be stripped of their time bonuses for that stage only, in which case the bonuses would roll down to the next racer(s) in the finishing order. 7

8 7 AWARDS TOUR OF ANCHORAGE RACE BIBLE 2018 Awards will be presented at the banquet on Sunday evening. Awards will be given for the top three GC racers in each division, and the top KOM/QOM racer in each division. 8 RESULTS Results will be posted after each stage on the road division website: To stay updated with the latest news and be informed as soon as results are available, be sure to follow the road division on Facebook. 9 OVERVIEW OF STAGES The following pages provide added detail and maps for each stage and should answer most questions. 9 TOUR OF ANCHORAGE RACE BIBLE 2018 STAGE 1 EAGLE RIVER NATURE CENTER TIME TRIAL Date Thursday, July 26 Sign-in 5:30-6:30 PM On-site registration? No Race start 7:00 PM, first rider out Details: Directions from Anchorage, take the Glenn Highway north to Eagle River Loop Rd. Turn right when you get to Eagle River Rd. North Fork Eagle River parking area is on the right, mile 7.4 of Eagle River Rd. Look for the brown Chugach State Park sign. This is different from our normal staging area at Eagle River TT. Parking at North Fork Eagle River Parking Area. Warm-up warm up in the parking lot or on Eagle River Rd prior to the race start. Warming up on course is NOT permitted once the race is underway. Start time trial format, with racers departing at 30-second intervals. Start list will be posted 30 minutes prior to race start. Day racers will be seeded at the race director s discretion. Feed Zone / Pit Area None. Outside support is not permitted. Competitions there will be no time bonuses or KOM/QOM points awarded for this stage. Drafting is not permitted. Racers must leave at least 7 meters (4 bike lengths) between their front wheel and the rear wheel of the rider in front in order to not be considered drafting. Passing is on the left only. Yellow line rule is in effect, roads will be open to normal traffic. 9

Yes Race start 7:00 PM, mass start by category Details: Directions Old Seward Highway to 1612 Oceanview Drive. We will be parking and staging at Turning Point Community Church. If necessary, overflow parking is available at Chain Reaction Cycles on Huffman Road. Parking Turning Point Community Church, overflow at Chain Reaction. Warm-up Warming up on the course is allowed. Staging on the shoulder of Old Seward Highway, just back from the start line. Stage as far to the right side of the road as possible as roads will be open to normal traffic. Start mass start by category. Exact start times will be posted 30 minutes prior to race start. Categories of similar ability may be combined for this event. Distance 5.6 miles; 1400 feet of elevation gain. Feed Zone / Pit Area none. Outside support is not permitted. Competitions KOM/QOM finish line points for the top three GC finishers in each category: 15, 12, 10 points. There will be no time bonuses awarded for this stage. A race vehicle will be available to transport food, water, and clothing to the finish area. Use caution on the descent. Yellow line rule is in effect, even after the race. Roads will be open to normal traffic. 11

Follow Rabbit Creek Rd. all the way to the top, turn right onto Clarks Rd. Storck Park is on the right, overflow parking on Clarks Road or at Bear Valley Elementary. Yes Race start 10:00 AM Details: Directions take Raspberry Road or Dimond Boulevard to Sand Lake Road. Follow Sand Lake Road to the parking area at the crest of the hill near West 80th Avenue. Parking on the dirt shoulder along the west side of Sand Lake Road near West 80th Avenue. Space is limited. Do not set up trainers next to your vehicle or on the paved multiuse trail behind the parking area. Warm-up warming up on course is permitted. Start mass start by category, details are outlined below.
