2 Introduction In the fall of 2012 the Youth Athletic Association held a Track and Field Meet in, NU. This event included participants from, Chesterfield Inlet and Whale Cove. It proved to be a lot of fun for all participants and organizers alike. The hope is to someday have a full Kivalliq Regional Track and Field Event and then potentially a Territorial. This document is being put together so that each community can be provided with information about; what a track and field meet is, and what is required in order to host a track and field event. It is our hope that your community will be able to join us for next year s track and field event. Track and Field may seem like a new sport to the north; however, every sport that is played in the north, from Inuit games to softball has some aspect of track and field incorporated in it. A layup in basketball and a high jump approach are identical, throwing a softball is just like throwing a javelin, and the arm motion in a seal hop is the same arm motion in a shot put launch, the list goes on and on. Involvement and training in the sport track and field will improve each athlete s athletic ability in every other spot they are involved in as it builds the skills that are require in every other sport played today. Within the sport of track and field itself there are countless opportunities for interested athletes and coaches to have continued involvement in the sports outside of the Territory. There are events in southern Canada and in the Northwest Territories every spring that woul be open for Nunamuit to participate in, if the desire is there to do so. hosted a 3 day, 8 event track and field meet with participants ages 11-13, 14-16, and 21 + taking part in the 100 Meter Race, 400 Meter Race, 60 Meter Hurdle Race, 2 Kilometre Run, Long Jump, Shot Put, High Jump, Discus Throw. All athletes, coaches, organizers and volunteers had a great experience during this event, and we all look forward to doing it again next year. We hope that you will look through this document and be inspired to host your own track and field event in your own community. These events can be run in one day or over the course of a weekend and are very affordable and enjoyable for all participants and officials. Steven Paterson Co-author and Co-event organizer

3 Description and Rules of Events Sprinting There are three different types of sprinting races. There is the 100 meter, the 200 meter, and the 400 meter. The sprints are easy to organize and tend to get the most participation. All you need is a start line and a finish line. These events can be run on a road, on an outdoor soccer field if there is one in your community or in a baseball diamond. All that needs to be done in preparation for this event is for that the distance of the run will need to be measured and marked. You can choose to have timers at the finish line with stop watches to get each runners time, or you can have people at the finish watching to see who crosses the line 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd etc. If you have more participants than you would like to run at one time (suggested to have 8 runners maximum in one race), then you may want to run them in heats. These would be races where the top 2 or 3 from each race will move on and race against the top 2 or 3 from the next heat in a final race. The number of heats you would have will depend on the amount of participants you start with. For our event we had a 100 meter and a 400 meter sprint. Both races were run on the road and finished in front of the community hall. The start line for each respective distance was measured back to the appropriate distances. Canadian Decathlete Jamie Adjetey Nelson competes in the 100m race Canadian Decathlete Jamie Adjetey Nelson rounds the corner during a 400m race For more information on Sprints view this link;

4 Long Distance Running There are a number of different long distance race lengths; most common are the 800 meters, 1500 meters, 5000 meters, and 10,000 meters. These races can also be held on the road or on a soccer/softball field. Long distance run are much like sprints, except participants run for a farther distance, an obviously not at such fast speeds. Long distance runners need to train to pace themselves, so that they do not become too tired or fatigued in the race to finish. The preparation for such events is also the same as marking the start and finish lines is all that is really required. As well as judges to be at the finish line to either time or point out the 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd, etc. place finishers. Because these longer distances usually take such a toll on the athletes bodies, long distance races are usually run as a final. Meaning it is only run once, no heats. For our event we did a 2 kilometre run on the roads in. Participants started in front of the community hall ran a route that was led by an RCMP truck and then looped back around to finish the race in front of the community hall once again. Canadian Decathlete Jamie Adjetey Nelson finishes out an exhausting 1500 meter race. For more information on Long Distance races please see the link;

5 Hurdles There are two different types of hurdle races, the 100 meter (Female, 33 inch hurdles) and the 110 meter (male, 42 inch hurdles) this is known as sprint hurdles. In a 100/110 meter race each participants will race over 10 hurdles that are placed in each sprinters respective lane. Another sprint race is the indoor sprint hurdles, which is run over a distance of 60 meters. Because the distance is shorter each sprinter races over 5 hurdles that are placed in each respective lane. The other hurdle race is the 400 meter hurdle race. This is for both male (36 inch hurdles) and female (30 inch hurdles). As in the 100/110 meter race, each sprinter has 10 hurdles to race over in the race, they are simply spaced wider apart over the 400 meters. For our event this race was also run on the road, in front of the community hall. We ran a 60 meter race with 4 lanes of 5 hurdles. This was done to reduce cost of purchasing hurdles. Hurdles were 18 inches high for both male and female, all age divisions. The first hurdles was placed 11 meters from the start line and the next 4 hurdles were placed 8.5 meters part from each other down the track, leaving a 15 meter run in from the last(5 th ) hurdle to the finish line. Instead of purchasing hurdles, sticks can be laid across traffic cones to form hurdles. This is a safe and inexpensive way to have a hurdle race. Canadian Decathlete Jamie Adjetey Nelson takes a stride over a hurdle in the 110 sprint hurdle race For more information on hurdle races please see the link;

6 Sprints/Hurdles/Distance Runs Rules All athletes must stay inside their lanes for the entire race (Sprints) All athletes must complete the full distance of the race. The start commands will be ON YOUR MARK SET Shot (starters gun ) or GO A second shot or bang will sound in the event of a false start. A false start occurs when someone makes a forward movement towards the finish line before the Go command. False starts will be at the discretion of the starter. The first false start will be a warning to the entire field. High Jump In the event of high jump, a bar is set at a certain height horizontally in front of a crash mat. The mat is set behind the bar for the athlete s safety. The athlete approaches the bar on an angle (half semi-circle approach) when the athlete reaches the middle of the bar the athlete will raise their inside foot and inside arm (foot and arm closest to the mat) and jump off the one foot and land on the other side of the bar, on the mat. This event took place in the gymnasium, all males jumped together at one time, and all the females jumped together at a different time. The starting height was set at one meter for both genders; athletes were allowed to pass at a height if they felt the height would be too easy. Athletes were only able to pass two heights in a row.

7 Canadian Decathlete Jamie Adjetey Nelson soars over the bar in the high jump event. For more information on high jump please see the link; High Jump Rules The starting height for the event is at the discretion of the event marshal. An athlete is out of the competition when he or she makes 3 consecutive missed attempts. A takeoff must be made off one (1) foot The attempt is complete when the athlete is completely off the mat(s). An attempt is counted when the athlete makes contact with the mat, or crosses the plain of the bar. An athlete can pass at a height at any time during the competition. A participant may not pass any more than 2 heights in a row. (This does not include starting height) The bar will be raised in 5cm increments.

8 Long Jump In the event of Long Jump athletes are required to run to a take-off point (usually marked off by a wooden board) and then use that momentum to jump as for as they can and then land safety in a sand pit. This event took place in the playground of the elementary school. A sand pit (4 meters wide X 6 meters long X 2 feet deep) was placed in the playground to provide a safe landing spot for the athletes, and to create a permanent location for long jump to take place over the years. Canadian Decathlete Jamie Adjetey Nelson in the take-off phase of a long jump attempt. For more information on long jump please see the link; Long Jump Rules The jumper s takeoff foot may make contact with the takeoff board, however if the foot should make contact with the front of the board or closer to the pit, the jump will result in a fault. All clean jumps will be measured from the mark that is closest to the takeoff board to the front of the takeoff board. A takeoff must be made off one (1) foot

9 Shot Put & Discus Throw Shot Put is a throwing event where an athlete will step into a clearly marked circle. The thrower must then place a shot put in the palm of their hand and rest it on their neck. The athlete must then launch the shot as far as he/she can into the field of play. The launch must be a pushing motion from the athletes shoulders out into the field, not a throw. The shot is not allowed to leave the throwers neck until the launch begins. The athlete must stay inside the circle until the throw is complete and the shot has landed on the ground. The athlete must then exit out the back of the circle under his/her own control. Any shot that lands outside the boundary of the field of play will not be measured. Discus throw is also a throwing event, where the athlete must enter the same circle a throw a discus as far as the can into the field of play. The athlete must stay inside the circle until the throw is complete and the shot has landed on the ground. The athlete must then exit out the back of the circle under his/her own control. Any shot that lands outside the boundary of the field of play will not be measured. Both Shot Put and Discus Throw were held at the baseball diamond during our event. The throwing circle was drawn with chalk at home plate and the baselines were used as the boundary lines for the field of play. Canadian Decathlete Jamie Adjetey Nelson begins to launch the shot into the air.

10 Canadian Decathlete Jamie Adjetey Nelson near the beginning stage of the discus throw (left) and near the release point of the discus throw (right) Shot Put Rules The thrower must enter and leave the throwing area through the back of the throwing circle. The shot is not to leave the neck of the thrower while the thrower is in their approach stage. The thrower s throw will be called a fault in the event that any part of the thrower s body touches the front of the circle/or the thrower leaves the circle during their throw. The shot must land inside the boundary. Discus Rules The thrower must enter and leave the throwing area through the back of the throwing circle. The thrower s throw will be called a fault in the event that any part of the throwers body touches the front of the circle/or the thrower leaves the circle during their throw. The discus must land inside the boundary For more information on Shot Put please see this site; for discus please see this site;

11 Javelin Javelin was not contested at our event in, Nu. However it is another popular track and field event that has been in the sport since the Ancient Greeks Olympics in the 300 s BCE. The event of javelin can also be run with soft balls to replace the javelin. The run up/approach and the release is the same idea. A measurement of where the ball lands would then be measured in replace of where the point of the javelin lands. javelin throw. Canadian Decathlete Jamie Adjetey Nelson holds himself back from crossing the foul line after releasing his javelin. This is the final phase of the For more information on rules of javelin and on the sport of javelin please see this link;

12 How to Run a Meet in your Community One of the first things that need to be done for the event is making a schedule. The fall or early spring would be a good time for a track and field even due to the nice outside weather and long days. As has been mentioned before the event can take place over one day or over the period of multiple days. You may choose to have all participants take part in each event all at the same time (all age groups and both genders together) and then move from one event to the next as a large group. This approach will work well if there are limited volunteers to help run the event. It may however make for a fairly long event and the time spent at each event may be very busy, depending on numbers. You may also choose to have each gender do separate events at one time and move along as two groups. This approach is nice because the group size is less, which helps to keep the events manageable and running smoothly. This approach is best used when you have at least 2 persons who can manage an event on their own, and other volunteers to help out. A third option would be to run all events throughout the day and have each age group rotate around going from one event to the other. (ie., at high jump, at long jump, at shot putt, etc. when the division is complete they will move to long jump, the will move to shot put and the will move to 400 meters etc.) The advantage to this is that the meet can be over in just a few hours, with very manageable group sizes. This approach will only work however, if you have 4-8 volunteers who are able to run an event on their own. Appendix A will give you an example of how we scheduled our event. Due the resources we had we chose option 2; having both genders in their own separate groups competing in each event together. Is it always important to note the location and time of each event to avoid confusion that may result in an athlete missing an event(s). You will need some method of recording the results of each event. Appendix B: Event Results will provide you with an example of how we recorded our results at each event for each division. On events where athletes are giving three approaches (i.e., Shot Putt) only the best score is counted as the athlete s final score. The results for each events are then recorded in the Event Finalist List (Appendix C: Event Finalist List) for future reference. A predetermined amount of point value is designated for each placing from each respective event; anyone who places first in and event will receive 6 points, 5 points will go to the second place finisher and so on (Appendix D: Point Tally). The results of every athlete is recorded, kept and tallied at the end of the meet (Appendix E: Overall Points Tracking Sheet) to determine the Event Champion for each respective division. The results are the then displayed on a final meet standing bulletin for all to see (Appendix F: Final Meet Standing) All athletes who finished in the top 5 placing in each event were given a Track and Field Ribbon, tags were placed on the back of each ribbon with the event name and division listed on it, for future reference of the athlete (Appendix G: Tags) Meet champions were presented with gold, silver and bronze medals, respectfully and a 2012 Track and Field Event T-shirt. Meet records were also kept for future reference of any future events, Appendix H: Meet Records.

13 Budget As mentioned in the introduction, the sport of track and field is a relatively inexpensive one, provided you have the available space to run races, and all you need it roads for that. If the funding is there, you can purchase all the necessary equipment. If the funding is not there, then there are other materials that can be used that will cover the same purposes. Below is a budget of all equipment that was used in our event. Items that have a * are monitory purchases for their respective event. If an item does not have a * this means that this item would be of great value to the event, but is not essential to the event. An alternative option to purchasing the material is also listed, to save on costs.
