19 2009 Outstanding Service Award, Club & County Awards

20 2010 Outstanding Service Award Margaret Grehan - Dublin 37 years ago I first became involved when I filled in for my husband Sean. My job was to collect the subscriptions when he had to work late the rest is history. A few years later Sean volunteered my services to the then Competition Secretary of Dublin B.L.O.E. Since then I have been the recorder of all Dublin events at Juvenile level and at all National Juvenile events. With the National Seniors I m on check-in duty. One event I love is the Dublin graded meetings. I have served on both the Dublin Boards and I am currently registrar at Dublin. I have met some wonderful people and have made many good friends through athletics. I would like to thank the Dublin Athletic Board for nominating me. Paddy Doyle - Kildare Kildare Athletics has prospered due to the dedication of the many officials and volunteers who have given of their time for the benefit of others. This is true in the case of Paddy Doyle a man who has been involved in athletics at many levels since the late 40 s. A native of Portersize, Co.Kildare Paddy competed with distinction for Millview. Later when his club amalgamated with Crookstown he was instrumental in raising funds and developing the fine grass track at Pike Bridge.R enowned for his willingness to promote athletics Paddy has given over two decades of coaching followed by administrative duties at his club. Through the years he has provided the venue for cross country championships and hosted a very successful open sports at his club. He has remained enthusiastic and devoted to his sport, competing each year in the National Masters Championships, where he never fails to win gold in the 100 and 200. He celebrates his 85th birthday next March and is a worthy recipient of this Outstanding Service Award.

21 2010 Outstanding Service Award Eileen Hayes - Laois Tonight we honour Eileen Hayes with a Outstanding Service Award. Seldom has the term lifetime been as appropriate to describe a person s involvement as it is in the case of Eileen Hayes and Athletics. Since her arrival from Cork in the late 1960 s she has had a constant presence in Athletic circles. You cannot think of Athletics in Portlaoise or Laois without thinking of Eileen Hayes. Eileen has enjoyed the involvement of her own family and celebrated their successes. The family life revolved around athletics, with the car full to the brim with Hayes and others travelling all over the country. However her involvement was not dependent on her own family competing. Athletics is her passion, her second family and the Hayes house was an open house and an athletics house. After a long day out at an event, dinner was served up to both families which often included Paddy Fitzgerald and his crew. Eileen s motivation and commitment is huge and her work would often continue into the small hours entering results. She is Mrs. Athletics and has been a mother figure to hundreds and hundreds of youngsters over the years. The amount of time that Eileen has given to the sport is best appreciated in a story from her husband Gus. He met Mrs Bloomer in Mountmellick after Mass one day. Mrs Bloomer finished the conversation with a request, Tell Eileen I was asking for her. Gus replied, I will, and if you see her first, tell her I was asking for her myself! Eileen is never one to get flustered and has a healthy distain for bureaucracy. If some adult missed a registration deadline, Eileen would ensure that no youngster would miss out on an event. She would stick to her guns, even if it made things a little more difficult on the day. Apart from family and Athletics, Eileen is deeply rooted and passionate about Cork. Since the days when her mother would invade the pitch in Rostellan with an umbrella, Eileen has flown the red flag of Cork. It was unfortunate for her that she settled in Laois, the county with the best record against Cork in All Ireland Hurling Finals. Laois beat Cork in 1915 and their 100% record against them in All Ireland finals stands to this day. She rarely misses a Cork championship game in either code and it was a great thrill for her to see the rebels win Sam last year managed by her nephew Conor Counihan. Today her passion is as strong as ever. You might see her sitting in the car at training, happy to see the numbers, happy to pass on the mantle to the next generation of coaches and administrators. You might see her at the door in St Mary s Hall, enjoying her grandson Paddy s first attempts at hurling. Paddy might have the last laugh when he grows up to continue Laois s 100% record against Cork in All Ireland hurling Finals! There are Salt of the Earth people who beaver away at the coalface for the good of their community. Many like Eileen operate under the radar. Tonight is an opportunity to recognize that work and to say, on behalf of so many people, Thank You Eileen.

22 2010 Outstanding Service Award Tommy Mulholland - Louth Tommy has served on the board of Athletics Louth as assistant treasurer from almost the formation of the first committee from the old BLE and NACA organisations. However, his involvement in athletics stretches far further back in time. His first involvement was with a club called Setanta AC based in Channonrock, Co. Louth when he ran the Louth Novice Cross Country Championship on the 18 th of November He followed that up the following month when taking the Louth Junior (Intermediate) Cross Country title leading his club to victory. Although never having won an individual Senior Cross Country title, he has finished second and third on a number of occasions in a highly competitive era which saw this race as the primary event in county athletics. Competing for Mountpleasant AC and his native Kilkerly AC, Tommy ran 13 successive Louth Senor Championship winning six team Golds in a row between 1963 and The highlight of the competitive stage of his career was the Leinster Novice in Carlow in 1959 in which every county of the province fielded full teams of 12 a feat which is rare today. On completing his time as an active athlete, Tommy became part of the group running the affairs of Kilkerly AC.. He also provided a venue for Louth Cross Country events on his land for a number of years. On one occasion he hosted the Leinster Senior Cross Country in which an athlete from West Wicklow took the title. Tommy has been an ever-present fixture on the gates of all Athletics Louth events for the past 10 plus years and carries out his role in a diligent and efficient manner. Athletics Louth are delighted to recognize Tommy s contribution to the sport in our county.
