11 The expectation and goals of high school maritime programs is not to just train students for maritime careers, even though the US Coast Guard sites a current 20% lack of workers across the maritime industry, projected to grow to 30% in ten years. In fact, only 5-10% of current high school maritime program graduates show employment in the maritime industry. Instead the goal is to turn out well educated high school graduates with a wider world view, who are well prepared for careers, particularly STEM careers, and/or continuing education.

40 High school maritime programs developing across the country not only provide hands-on rigorous training for multiple lucrative careers on land and sea for young people, they help to greatly expand awareness of the impact of the maritime industry in everyone s life- past, present, and future. The entire maritime world is hidden from the vast majority of Americans. School students receive a minimal bit of maritime history: Cortez, Christopher Columbus, the Mayflower, perhaps Old Ironsides. There is so much more, and touching on the history is just the beginning. High School Maritime programs are being created around the United States with measurable results. The Port Townsend School District began a five-year initiative to align their curriculum along a central Maritime Framework to anchor all subjects and grade levels in experiences in their maritime community, grades K-12.
