2 Commodore s Message May Days are here! As Carol and I sit at Cork, Ireland Airport awaiting our flight home my thoughts are already on leaving on Miss Tee 11 immediately upon our return (after catching up on sleep). Our 24 day trip has been amazing. Ireland is a very old country and has the ruins, castles and bog to confirm its aged existence. However one thing is very evident. For a country surrounded by ocean and with a sea faring history, it does not compare to what we have in our home area. While we basically stayed only in small villages, moorage was non-existent. Sailboats were tied to piers, the occasional mooring buoy or had a double keel to remain on muddy bottom. While there are some islands to visit, there are no places to safely anchor and explore. No wonder our friends here come to our waters for 4 months to boat! We are truly blessed!! See you at Taku. Larry Seeley, Commodore, C.R.Y.C. Miss Tee II

For the 2017 year, a total of $ (net) was raised to support the B. C. Marine Parks Forever Society. On April 30, the Society announced it made an historic donation of $749,310 to purchase an island in the Harmony Group, Hotham Sound (see attached news release). Thanks to your generosity we can continue to support this worthwhile BC charity. For more info, see

6 Editor s Notes True to form, April s showers gave way to glorious spring weather during the last week of the month and May has opened with a continuation of great weather, although winds have been light for the most part. It was good to get out on the water again and make sure all boat systems are functioning in the green for the summer season. I was extremely envious of Leo and Dona Lambert ( White Tara ), who departed on the flood tide on April 27 from E dock at Discovery Harbour Marina for Roche Harbor, WA, with stops at Maple Bay and False Creek (Vancouver) among others for a two week cruise around Georgia Strait. Apart from a few rain showers, so far I think the weather for their trip has been exceptional. We expect Leo and Dona back in time for the May Long Weekend getaway to Taku Resort. Leo and Dona Lambert in White Tara, departing for points south, Apr. 27, 2018.

7 And just a reminder for those members who are planning on participating in the May Long Weekend getaway to Taku Resort, book your spot at Taku and remember to bring your wine donations to Taku for the raffle. This year all proceeds from the raffle will report to the CRYC coffers (administered by Rene Bosshart, treasurer). Also, remember that CRYC is not providing the meat for the dinner at Taku, as was the case in previous years: so this year it is a true pot-luck dinner with everyone contributing their choice of foods. Steve Gardner ( Dance Lightly ) Editor, CRYC Newsletter

Let s also welcome our newest members to C.R.Y.C., Andrew and Tegan Gardner ( Darian ). Andrew and Tegan are moving to Campbell River from Edmonton in June and are anxious to experience more time on the water this summer in Darian, which they moor on E dock at Discovery Harbour Marina.

15 Reciprocal Moorage: More Benefits For CRYC Members! In addition to local business discounts, the attractiveness of CRYC membership is augmented by the use of reciprocal moorage at many other participating Yacht Clubs, most of which are located at various points south of Campbell River. These include major population centers such as Nanaimo, Vancouver and Victoria. For members cruising south, this reciprocal moorage at other Yacht Clubs at much discounted rates represents a real benefit of membership. For additional information on the Reciprocals Program, please visit our website at CLUB EVENTS While not specifically a club event, CRYC participated at the Ocean Pacific Boat Show and Sale hosted by Ocean Pacific, at their boatyard and store on Saturday, April 14. The weather cooperated to some degree, with the predicted rain showers held in abeyance, but as usual for mid-april, the chill was in the air. CRYC volunteers manned a table and handed out brochures to interested parties.

16 Left to right: Marg Swain, Dona Lambert, Leo Lambert and Dan Swain entertaining themselves at the Ocean Pacific Boatshow on April 14. Lady s Lunch: The Lady s Lunch was held at the SoCal Restaurant on Tuesday, May 1. Men s Lunch: The Men s Lunch was held at Painters Lodge on Wednesday, May 2. The CRYC General Meeting was held on Wednesday, May 2 at the Fish and Wildlife Clubhouse. After the business portion of the meeting concluded, an interesting and informative presentation was given by Maaike van der Veen and Huib Dinant of the 60 ft. catamaran Madeleine. Maaike and Huib are from Amsterdam, Netherlands and are currently in year number 2 of their journey around the oceans. Maaike gave a talk on the Iberian and Caribbean portion of their passage, culminating at the transiting of the Panama Canal.

18 CRYC PLANNED EVENTS May Long Weekend (May 18, 19 and 20): Taku Resort The Long Weekend festivities at Taku Resort are similar to last year where CRYC teamed up with Campbell River s Ripple Rock Power Squadron at Taku Resort on the east side of Quadra Island, at the entrance to Drew Harbour. PLEASE NOTE: Due to a strong ebb tide on the morning of May 18, the planned race over to Take Resort from Francisco Point (south end of Quadra Island) is CANCELLED. Attendees should be aware of the tide times, as departing from Campbell River any time before noon on the 18 will entail bucking a strong ebbing tidal current in Discovery Passage. The itinerary for the festivities at Taku Resort is presented below: Taku Itinerary May 18, 19, 20 & 21, 2018 Friday May 18th Happy Hour(s) 1700, 1800, 1900??? Wine & Cheese hosted by the Ripple Rock Power Squadron Sat. May 19th Sailboat race (wind permitting) start time 1000 hrs. Power Boat predicted log race start time 1015 hrs. (about) Potluck dinner at the Round House 1800 hrs. NOTE: Bring your own plates/cutlery & something to share Draw for the Wine Bags (Proceeds going to CRYC): See Marg Swain for tickets 3 for $ for $ for $20.00 Sunday May 20 th : Boat Maintenance 0900 hrs. Happy Hour/Snacks 1200 hrs. on the dock Sail past 1500 hrs.

19 The following is the Race Details for the Taku Race on Saturday morning. (Start times are tentative and will be a staggered start between sail and power) This course is set so that it will fit both sail and power boats. How it works is you enter the Lat and Long that are in chart 1. Distance and heading are in chart 2. Course lay out is chart 3. What you do is plan on how long it will take you to complete each leg without changing RPM. When you cross the start point the SOG may change due to currents but you cannot adjust the RPM to compensate loss or gain of speed. You will enter the cross-over time over each point of the legs. Base on your estimated time for each leg the difference is your penalty ie leg 1 ETA (Estimated) 12min ATA (Actual) 10.5: Therefore: difference is 1.5. Now if there's wind the sailboats will use the same points but the start and end time of crossing point 1 will be used as the overall time, then adjusted based on what sails are used and club boat rating. Start Time ETA ATA DIFF Leg 1 Leg 2 Leg 3 Leg 4 Sailboat Start Finish Time Adjusted time Start

23 Trip to Princess Louisa Inlet (Chatterbox Falls Park) June 9-17 : Princess Louisa Inlet / Chatterbox Falls Park Princess Louisa Inlet, 4 miles long, is the holy grail for cruising people from all over the world. Entered through Malibu Rapids, the inlet is surrounded by 3000-foot-high mountains that plunge almost vertically into 600-foot depths below. Entering Princess Louisa Inlet is like entering a great cathedral. The author Earle Stanley Gardner wrote that no one could see Princess Louisa Inlet and remain an atheist. It is one of the most awesome destinations on the coast. What words can describe this place? All the superlatives have been used up on lesser subjects. Please observe a no-wake speed limit. Larger wakes bounce off the sides of the inlet. Malibu Club, a Young Life Christian summer camp for teenagers, is at the entrance to the inlet, just inside Malibu Rapids. The kids and staff are welcoming and polite. Tours are possible. It s probably best to visit by dinghy after your boat is settled at MacDonald Island or the park dock at Chatterbox Falls. As you clear Malibu Rapids and motor up Princess Louisa Inlet, you will be treated 23

24 to waterfalls streaming down the mountainsides. About halfway along, 5 mooring buoys are behind MacDonald Island. Princess Louisa Park is at the head of the inlet, surrounded by a bowl of high sheer cliffs that astonish even repeat visitors. June 9 Campbell River to Sturt Bay Sturt Bay. locally called Marble Bay, is located on Malaspina Strait near the northeast end of Texada Island. Sturt Bay has the best anchorage and moorage on Texada Island. It will be the June 9 overnight stop. June 10 Sturt Bay to Maude Cove May stop over for the night or just for lunch (depending on weather). June Maude Cove to Harmony Islands Harmony Islands Marine Park: The Harmony Islands in Hotham Sound are a lovely spot. The best anchorage is in locally-named Kipling Cove, a nook surrounded by the three northern islands that make up the Harmony Islands. The bottom is rocky, so be sure you have the right ground tackle and it s well set. You ll run a stern-tie to shore. June 12 Harmony Islands to Princess Louisa Chatterbox Falls Park This will be a long day as its 36nm and rapids. Depending on tide times, the departure time from Harmony Islands will be agreed upon at the Harmony Islands anchorage (Faster boats can leave later). June 15 Princess Louisa to Dark Cove Dark Cove is a little notch between Foley Head and Goliath Bay, (NOTE: Depending on individual plans, Club boats have the option of departing for other anchorages and/or marinas if not returning to Campbell River). June 16 Dark Cove to Sturt Bay June 17 Sturt Bay to Campbell River Note : Locations for overnight or lunch breaks may change due to conditions. 24
