2 Hi everyone Presidents Report This year is shaping up to be pretty promising. Your directors are busy preparing and planning for this year s events. The addition of Ron Tomas and Wayne Carlson as directors in the portfolios for racing and newsletter is greatly appreciated. Thanks to Richard Britton for his willingness to step up as a director for the past number of years. Although he may not be in one specific position right now, his help has and will be appreciated when he can provide it. I look forward to seeing everyone again as we focus on our 3 sailing events for Port Browning May long weekend, Newcastle Island in July 16th & 17th and Winters Cove Sept long weekend on Saturna. Preparations are under way so mark your calendar and make plans to attend. Check the website and Facebook for more information. Bad Kitty is well underway on her annual modifications. Ron, Alec and I always get drawn into the tradition of making changes. Old habits die-hard. Nothing like last year but changes that we believe will help our performance. Are you getting ready for the upcoming season yet? Help out our new newsletter editor Wayne, him (wsc5968@gmail.com) your plans, pictures or stories. I know of a few stories out there. Specifically one member who lives on an island, that seems to do almost as many mods as us. Lets here your story Peter and any other member that may have a story past or present. 3 Stu, Tim and Wayne's Excellent Adventure Preface by Wayne Carlson Saturday might be good day to move the boat, the tides are good, Stuart explains in a calm and rational voice, and the weekend after, the tides don t work. He goes on, The weather will be cold but we can dress for it. I say, Sure sounds like a good idea. Tim the motorman Poustie, presciently says to Stuart, We should bring a spare motor. The forecast is for snow starting about noon. Stuart says, We leave the dock early so we should be at Ladner before the snow hits. February 26, 2011, Weather forecast snow fall warning cm. starting at noon, temperature -3. We left Point Roberts at 8:00 am for Westham Island with over cast skies with the thermostat hovering at about -3 C. The pleasant winter cruise started out very nice we were dressed for the cold with lots of layers. The wind is out of the northwest, we hoist the main sail, unfurl the jib and we are doing a respectable 11 knots on a reach. It was a good idea to move the boat today, we think at that point. By Stuart Kerr Then the weather took a turn for the worst, just south of Sandheads we look over to the west and see the black clouds. We reef the main. Unfortunately that wasn't the end of the foul weather. Shortly after, the freezing rain starts. Boy our hands are getting cold, we notice. (Just a little colder than we expected!). Crossing the deck was treacherous with the freezing rain stuck to the decks. At Sandheads the wind was on the nose so we dropped the main sail. We motored up the river keeping in touch with Bob all the way. As we neared Steveston, to clear customs, the icy rain turned into snow. As we approached the dock our motor stalled and we couldn t restart it. Thankfully, a fish boat was nearby and kindly gave us a tow to the dock. It didn t take Tim long to find that the problem was caused by water in the fuel tank. We flushed out the water but the motor still wouldn t run. It had frozen up. Luckily, our trusty spare motor was on board. We swapped motors, and then headed up river. By now the tide had turned and was going out. On the way to Westham Island, fighting the current upriver the spare motor was running erratically we could only run ¼ to ½ throttle or it would start to stall. We were making about 1 knot up the river. We realized that the motor was too cold and the carburetor kept icing up. We wrapped the motor up in two jackets and nursed the motor the up the river. We crawled up to the boat launch where Bob was waiting with Bad Kitty's trailer ready to haul Check out BCMS Page 3 of 8

4 Flying Kiwi out of the water. Now, safely on shore with frozen hands and feet, I made a note to self outboard motors and freezing cold weather are not a good mix! Thanks to my crazy crew and our shore man Bob, the good news was there were no fingers or toes lost to frostbite. 5 2011 Semiahmoo International Regatta with Multihull Racing, April 30 & May 01 The First Racing Event of the 2011 Season that involves multihulls is the Semiahmoo International Regatta on April 30 & May 01. The White Rock Pier is the prime viewing spot for these races if you are not sailing. The Semiahmoo Bay International Regatta 2011 is organized and conducted by the International Yacht Club of British Columbia. The fleet will be divided into divisions and classes according to PHRF rating handicaps at the discretion of the Race Committee. This is a Vancouver Area Racing Council (VARC) event and VARC division splits will be used for competitors registered with VARC. BC Multihull Society Port Browning Sail In, May 21 & 22 Sail in on Saturday; meet on the boats, on shore and in the pub. Saturday evening: Beach Picnic. Starting at 6:00 PM Bring your own food & drinks. If anyone has a portable BBQ, it would be appreciated if they could bring it to the beach and allow others to use it. BCMS Annual General 8:00 PM on Saturday evening on the Beach Sunday morning: No host breakfast in the restaurant followed by the skippers meeting on the deck in front of the pub at 10:00 AM. Fun sailing race Sunday afternoon. Every (sail) boat is welcome, with courses and race ratings for all. Lots of prizes, no entrance fees. If you don t have a boat to race on, crew with someone else. This is a great way to meet new people and experience different boats. Sunday-evening dinner and Awards Presentation at the Marina PM. Check out BCMS Page 5 of 8

6 Notice BC Multihull Society Annual General Meeting Saturday May 21, 2011 As part of our May Long Weekend Sail-In, the Annual General Meeting of the British Columbia Multihull Society will be held at 20:00 hours on the beach or nearby facilities at Port Browning, North Pender Island on Saturday May 21, 2011 Agenda will include: Report to Members Budget Approval Financial Statements Election of Officers All members of the Society in good standing are encouraged to attend. Also, if you have not renewed your membership for 2011 please do so before the meeting. You can pay either by PayPal on the BCMS website: or use the application form on the website and mail a cheque. BC Multihull Society Newcastle Island Sail In July 16 & 17 Anchor in Mark Bay or take the small passenger ferry from Nanaimo. A BBQ pit is reserved for Saturday night for a group dinner. 7 Report from the Council of BC Yacht Clubs, February 12, 2011, Glenn MacDonald Ladysmith Maritime Society has received a federal grant of $400,000 for construction of a visitor centre include 3000 of guest moorage. Gorge Harbour; Taylor Seafood, Klafoos 1st Nations recreational boaters & Transport Canada have been unable to agree on future shellfish farm expansion. Newcastle Island Mark Bay; Mooring buoys have been installed very close together in shallow water. No anchoring is allowed nearby. Day trips are to vacate the buoys by 15:00 hours. Mooring buoy fee freeze extended to March Montague Harbour; Proper marine insurance is required for long term anchored boats. Home insurance may cover your boat while sailing but not in a marina. Check your insurance coverage. Fire Extinguishers require annual inspection & certification by a qualified extinguisher technician. Vancouver Police Department proposes a motor vehicle licence suspension if a boater breathalizer read 0.05 to Winter Cove, Saturna Island; A dinghy dock is to be installed. Tofino; A tsunami warning siren (4m by 4m) will be installed off of Chesterman Beach. Musquiem Band proposing a 170 slip marina at Richmond Island west of the Arthur Laing Bridge. Steveston; A proposal to build a 600 floating doc nearby to accommodate two tall ships 300 long. CBCYC opposes de-staffing on all light stations, some key stations should remain staffed. As you maybe aware.the Council of British Columbia Yacht Clubs (CBCYC) with a membership of some 50 yacht clubs and over 20,000 members, represents the largest segment of the recreational boating community in British Columbia. We bring. to your attention that there are an estimated 400,000 to 500,000 recreational boats in the province of British Columbia. Many of these boats have multiple users. Additionally there are thousands of commercial vessels such as ferries, cruise ships, freights, tug, fish boats etc. Unlike most of Canada, these vessels operate year round, making British Columbia waters the busiest in the country.. 8 The Council of B.C. Yacht Clubs represents the interests of members from more than 50 British Columbia yacht clubs. The Council provides key input into the affairs influencing all British Columbia boaters including Canadian Coast Guard activities, debris control, water use license applications and parks research.
