The tower is open from 10am until 6pm every day. Each day, at am and again at 2.30 pm, for the duration of the Winter of Heritage programme, one of these enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers will show you around the most famous building in world literature where James Joyce s masterpiece begins. You will learn why this Martello Tower was built and its association with James Joyce. You can also enjoy the absolutely stunning views of Dublin Bay from the top of this iconic building. 6 Winter Talks Stone bridges of Dublin A talk by Rob Goodbody Marlay House Wednesday 30th January 7pm Pre- There are many stone bridges in Dublin, city and county, some of them ancient. This talk explores some of the less well-known and more enigmatic bridges of the Dublin area, followed by a look at the variety of stone bridges in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, some of which are now gone. 7 Winter Talks Kingstown - the first decade A talk by Tom Conlon Marlay House Wednesday 6th February 7pm Pre- Kingstown - the first decade ( )- from green field to active town When George IV departed from the Dunleary on 3rd September 1821 he left an unfinished harbour, with unfenced common land behind it. Within a decade the area was transformed into the active town of Kingstown with a population approaching 5,000, with streets, shops, schools, hotels, chapels, and regular transport links to Dublin and Britain. This talk describes some of the details of that transformation. Talks are free. Must be pre-booked via dlrheritageevents@dlrcoco.ie

8 Winter Talks Kingstown - the Second decade A talk by Tom Conlon Marlay House Wednesday 13th February 7pm Pre- Kingstown - the second decade ( ) - the development frenzy continues By the start of the second decade, the residents and developers of Kingstown were confident enough to seek that the town might become the port of Dublin. That project failed, but many others succeeded. In this decade in Kingstown, they developed the railway, built many more houses and terraces, developed cultural, sporting and leisure facilities, installed gas lighting, opened many more schools, churches, and set up local government in the form of the Kingstown Town Commissioners. By the end of this decade, many considered it to be a town of great merit, but William Makepeace Thackaray, the well-travelled poet and travel writer considered it shoddy, perhaps reflecting the appearance of many hastily constructed buildings Talks are free. 9 Winter Talks On the Borders of the Pale A talk by Rob Goodbody Marlay House Wednesday 20th February 7pm Pre- On the Borders of the Pale - a history of the Kilgobbin, Stepaside and Sandyford area Not long ago the Kilgobbin-Stepaside-Sandyford area was mainly rural, though this has changed over the past twenty-five years. There is still a great deal of history to see in the area and this talk looks at the background to the churches, castles, pale ditches and houses that have left their traces - as well as a town that has now disappeared. Experienced guides will bring you on a voyage of discovery enthralling you with stories of discovery, heroism, war and disasters at sea. You will learn about maritime history, exploration, navigation, radio, deep-sea cable technology, nature and art inspired by the sea and relevant to the school syllabus. See the revolving Bailey Optic, try the electrified steam engine and pause to reflect at the Titanic exhibit, the Royal Navy prisoner s docks and the war memorial. Hear the story of how the original 17th Century house, called The Grange was purchased in 1764 by David La Touche of French Huguenot origin, extended, and renamed Marlay, and was then sold in 1864 to Robert Tedcastle, the well known Dublin coal merchant. The Tedcastle family lived at Marlay until In 1925 Philip Love (a market gardener, who at one time was the largest tomato producer in Ireland) acquired the House.
