Certainly her current owner has enthused all with his charters and given the old fox a new lease of life. There will always be special boats that everyone remembers for all the right reasons casting their spells and seducing owners and LONE FOX is definitely one of these. 2 HERITAGE, VINTAGE AND CLASSIC YACHTS +44 (0) ROBERT CLARK 65 FT KETCH 1957 VAT VAT is unpaid t HISTORY Commissioned for Colonel Whitbread of the long established brewing family; LONE FOX was appropriately named for a rather private person and former amateur jockey with a strong interest in fox hunting. Built in early 1957, in the same shed as Americas Cup challenger SCEPTRE, she was Colonel W H (Bill) Whitbread\'s personal yacht for a quarter of a century. For a while he sailed and occasionally raced on the English South Coast. In due course however LONE FOX was taken back up to cruise the beautiful Scottish waters out of Badachro. From here there were frequent cruises around the West Coast and Hebrides typically a fortnight at a time. Colonel Whitbread himself, inspired no doubt also by his long standing good friend Francis Chichester, was to become the sponsor of the famous round-the-world race. LONE FOX routinely wintered back in Robertson s yard and it was in 1977 as she was about to be put back in the water that the launch carriage broke free and the boat accelerating down the slipway snagged a stabilising stay snapping the main mast. Fortunately the damage was limited. Colonel Bill was to continue sailing her regularly right up to the age of 81, when reluctantly he had to sell her. For the next 5 years LONE FOX underwent a major restoration, pretty well throughout bringing her back to original condition but with the exception of alloy for the wooden masts. With this work complete she went to St Barts in 2003 for chartering and a year later for sale. The buyer was Ira Epstein former options trader and very keen sailor from youth; by now with considerable experience of a variety of both small sailing boats and large yachts with the emphasis on classic yachts. After some dalliance having admired LONE FOX from far and near he took the plunge in 2006, dedicating himself fully to her care. In his first season she won the Best Charter Yacht Performance Award at the 2007 Antigua Classic. Three years later she was chartered for making a promotional film on the Bavaria non alcoholic beer for distribution in the Arab World. As a brewer of the real thing it probably had Colonel Whitbread turning in his grave. Later that year she headed for Northern waters in Maine where she went through a minor refit, including foundry serviced lead keel with all new Aquamet 22 keel bolts. From 1981 under the ownership of Talbot Smith she was based in North Wales and raced regularly in the Irish sea, taking part also in Tall Ships Race. In 1985 she took part in the West Highland Yachting Week Regatta. In 1986 Keith Ehlert from California bought her for chartering out of Antigua and by 1990 she was in Marina del Rey in California for restoration. Teaming up with Christopher von Trampe, by 1997 Keith abandoned the project and Christopher acquired the yacht. After a grim winter in the yard she headed south again for Antigua Classics 2011 to be rewarded with 1st overall in the Classic and Vintage Class, best charter yacht and the Panerai Trophy. The following 25th anniversary year she achieved the fastest cumulative time and again presented with the Panerai Trophy among some other worthy contenders. Victory over TUIGA was particularly sweet the two of them having wintered together at Robertson s yard in the 1960s.
