7 Application for Approval of Additional Equipment Applicant to complete Applicant s Name Address Scott Whitman 493 Princeton Ave. Brick, NJ 08724, USA Telephone SKUD 18 Hull / Sail No. Name of equipment Description of equipment s function Relationship to control points Dimensions Construction materials and method Method of fixing equipment to boat Ability to remove the equipment whilst afloat Is this a one-off or will it be produced in quantity If for production, who will manufacture the equipment? scottnj@gmail.com USA005/006 Altered rudder crossbar geometry To make both rudders turn close to the same amount, or have the inside one turn slightly more. C.8.5 RUDDERS (a) USE (3) A rudder tie-rod of a permanently fixed length and located not less than 150mm longitudinally from the centerline of the rudder pins shall connect the rudders or tiller arms. The new tie-rod is a fixed length located about 1 inch beyond the tails of the rudders, much more than the 150mm required. Outer bracket is a 1.5 x 2 rectangular bar. Inner angle bracket is a 2 x 2 piece of angle. Tie-rod is same diameter as original one. The outer brackets are made from carbon fiber wrapped around a foam core. The inner angle brackets are carbon fiber. The tie-rod is a carbon fiber tube and attaches to the outer carbon mounts using Ronstan hiking stick joints. The brackets are through bolted to the rudder blades using the original holes from the old tie-rod mounts. The tie-rod attaches to the outer carbon mounts using Ronstan hiking stick joints. The steering control lines exit the pulleys in the drain holes, crisscross and attach to the carbon angle brackets with shackles. Either remove the rudders, or remove four pairs of nuts and bolts. One-Off This is not to scale; because I do not have any hardware to get dimensions from right now, the boat is packed away in a shipping container on its way overseas. The pink pieces are carbon fiber through bolted to the rudders using the existing holes. The bigger, outer bracket is a mount for the tie-rod. The inner angle bracket is where the steering control lines attach. This is about the same location as the original setup so the control lines do not need to be modified when switching between systems. The way the rudders turned always bothered me. The outside rudder would turn the full 45deg, but as Chris mentioned, the inside blade would only turn about 25deg.
8 This seemed backwards to me. The inside blade moves through a smaller arc than the outer one, so it should turn more than the outer one. The same thing as the front wheels of a car. The other reason I do not like the original setup is the leeward blade is the only one really in the water when healed over. When you try bearing away, it was only turning 25deg. Not ideal when the boat naturally wants to round up and you are trying to duck another boat or trying to round a windward mark. The reason the inside blade turned less was the location of the rubber cross bar joints. In the original setup, they are behind the rudder pivot, and inside from the rudder centerlines. See the attached video showing this geometry. What I tried doing is moving the rubber joints to the outside of the rudder centerlines. See the second attached animation. This provided the desired result of the inside rudder turning more than the outer one. The other way to get the same result is what was done with adding the tillers. For testing the theory, my setup was easier than adding tillers, because I did not have to reroute my steering lines and it quickly can be converted back to the original setup (no extra holes in the blades). It does extend beyond the rudders by two inches at the same height from waterline as the original cross bar. When comparing the two setups, I can definitely feel a difference. The boat can turn much quicker and just feels more responsive. As far as comparing drag through a turn, I have not been able compare accurately. Approx 130mm x 150mm Hose pipe bent to form U shape Qty 4 self tapping screw to gunwhale No X One-Off N/A Production The Mar 2008 class rules no longer allow any means of preventing the spinnaker sheets from falling below the spin pole, but allow the spin pole to project 100mm from the front of the hull. We consider that, in the event of a collision, this could cause damage to another boat or to the pole itself. The flexible plastic hose prevents the spinnaker sheets from falling below the pole a problem that could not be rectified by a disable crew member but also would not cause damage in a collision and would not require a disabled crew member to move on the foredeck. 2 photos are attached.
