2 March 2016 THE BEACON 1 COMMODORE S REPORT By Kelly Cantley Kashima March 13 th. Come on out for any or all of the festivities. See you on the Balcony! Congratulations and thanks to Matt Kreke and Aleks Tamulis for organizing and Bob Kellock for PRO ing the Shallow Water Series. 17 boats entered! The next one in the series is on June 4 th.the February membership meeting was well attended and Michelle and Aleks cooked a delicious dinner. We heard from Trevor that our move date will be at the end of May. The developer has promised us a 60 day notice so when we receive the notice we ll let the membership know via . Club clean-up is this weekend, March 5 th and 6 th. The Cannon ceremony to close the club is on Saturday March 12 th and Opening Day is REAR COMMODORE S REPORT By David Fernandez With the unusually fine weather we have had in February, it seemed a shame to miss a chance to get on the water. My wife Rebecca and I chartered a Catalina 28 and took my sister sailing for her birthday. The boat show was in full swing at Burton Chase Park and we had light winds and smooth water. The highlight was a show put on by a whale about a mile off the break water that lasted about 15 minutes with breached and fin slaps, ending with a lift of the tail. Spectacular creature! Opening Day is just around the corner and the volunteer board was filled in record time. I confess I have not worn white pants with white shoes since well, ever, but the spirit of the event compels me. I have it on reliable authority that the Irish coffee is not to be missed. I only hope I can keep my pants clean the whole day. As a general reminder, be sure to sign-up for Officer of the Day. Jr Staff Commodore s Report By Trevor Bazeley The Club is moving along nicely and smoothly for the beginning of the year. We ve had quite a few things going on, thanks to SCCYC members who are trying to get everyone involved. Many thanks go out to Michelle and Aleks for the hard work they ve been doing with regards to racing and hospitality. We did have one hitch -- club cat and last year s Commodore s Award recipient Murray was demoted from Security Chair to No Chair as he did not get the mouse who ate through the cord for the dish washer which had to be repaired. However he did bring in a mouse the following day so he has been reinstated. As opening day approaches this month, we need everyone s help to get the club ready. Also, don t forget to show up to opening day. It is rumored to be the last one in the old club as we know it.

3 March 2016 THE BEACON 2 New Zealand Rugby World Cup Trip with a Touch of Sailing By JSC Trevor Bazeley I went down to New Zealand a while back for the Rugby World cup and one of the games was in Wellington on the north island. At the southern tip where the ferry goes from there to Nelson at the top of the south island, it can get really rough crossing the strait where the wind blows hard. I was over in Nelson to watch one game and then went back to Wellington for a game. I had a couple of days there and so I visited the Royal Port Nicholson YC. [Above. I then went down to Auckland to watch two rugby matches and then it was over to Sydney Australia for a few days where I was at the Cruising club of Australia. I saw this neat idea for the helm on one race boat. To tack the boat, the helmsman walks over to the new high side unclipping the pedestal and then re-pins it so there is no need for two wheels. Cool idea. After that, it was back onto the big tin bird to LA with fond memories of my vacation. They were very friendly, it was a fun time but the weather had turned rough with 35 to 40 Knot winds. It was Sunday and they have a very active junior program. There were four, twentyfour foot keel boats for the juniors to sail kites and all. They were having a blast--three kids to a boat and changing helmsmen each time they came in to take a breather. The chase boats were getting beat up too but the kids loved it. No wonder Kiwi kids are such good sailor girls and boys. Then, two of the boats broke some equipment and could not sail so the kids were all on the dock hailing by radio for the kids that were out to come in so they could have fun before the wind went away. I did a burgee swap with the club. It was a fun afternoon and great to get to know the kids and grownups over a few libations. I went up to Wangary on the north island and stayed with friends there; had a blast going up to the Bay of islands just [Above. 4 March 2016 THE BEACON 3 SCCYC RACING By Race Chair Matt Kreke This year s racing season started early in the marina and we are off to a great start. Not to be out done in winter racing, SCCYC answered this year with the Shallow Water Series. The first of the series was February 6. As Opening Day approaches, SCCYC will once again have the honor of opening the Spring racing season in Marina del Rey by hosting the Les Storrs Regatta, March 19. Immediately after that, March 26, is the Lido Fleet 2 Invitational. Our racers and race committees have answered the call. Shallow Water Series The Shallow Water Series is an answer to the winter blues. Dinghy sailors have clamored for Winter/Spring racing opportunities and SCCYC delivered. It s an open event to all dinghies 12 to 18 feet with the entire course inside the marina. Each series will have a different course. Variety is the spice of life and sailing is no exception. Series One was held February 6 th and had a great turnout. We had 19 entrants with 17 competitors comprised of C-15s, CFJs, Johnson 18, Lidos, and Snipes. Please recognize this was with only one month of notice for a new series with approval only in January. We must all thank Aleks Tamulis for initiating, developing, and implementing this all as series race chair. That Saturday was a balmy 76 degrees with light winds, 5 knots or less. A fine SoCal Winter Day. The course was a RLC starting off Burton Chace Park heading North around Quarantine Buoy A, down the channel and through a gate near the fuel dock and no sail area. The windward mark was at the far end of the no sail buoys and leeward mark back up the channel at the other end. The boats returned through the gate and finished at Burton Chase. Each race was just under an hour and the wind lasted just long enough for two races. All of this effort couldn t have been done without the help of our volunteer members. First, Bob Kellock was gracious enough to be our PRO on short notice. He truly appreciated using the docks for the start/finish line. The other members of the RC were our Rear Commodore, Dave Fernandez, and myself. Dave was generous with his time to serve on his first Race Committee and planning on more. Hospitality was expertly handled by Michelle Markman. We had two photographers for the race, Gary who had prints available for the racers before they returned. Les Storrs Regatta Fate and fortune are shining on our annual Les Storrs Regatta and we are planning to capitalize on this with a respectable turnout. Once more SCCYC has the honor of hosting the first regatta of Spring for the marina. This year, Les Storrs is also AS- MBYC s High Point race number 5. It must be mentioned with great appreciation to David Doeh and ASMBYC for the overtime in promoting our race. Eligibility is the same as in previous years, PHRF and One Designs are welcome. There s an addition this year. As a result of being High Point race 5, there s a Cruising Class too. We are encouraging all One Designs to sign up early. So please help spread the word and join us on the water, March 19. Race Chair s Corner I want to thank everyone who has helped to get the SCCYC racing season off to a great start. From the Board, to the volunteers and of course racers that have made this happen. This is a volunteer effort and I encourage more members to join us out on the water, whether as competitors or volunteers. If you have any interest in racing, race committee, etc. please let us know. Your assistance is appreciated and your comradery is welcomed. With that being said, we are putting out the call for a mark set boat for the Les Storrs Regatta. The committee boat is secured, thank you to Jim Doherty, for the use of Camelot. Yet we still are in need of the additional boat. 5 March 2016 THE BEACON 4 News off and on the water... Baffled by Burgees by Bruce Fleck Hi Everyone, I am in the process of updating the Burgee Catalog for SCCYC. We have a very impressive collection from all over the world. All of which were collected by members visiting other clubs or members of other clubs visiting us over the years. Fun! Anyhow, we have five burgees that I cannot identify. Please don't suggest "search Google". Done that - I have spent more hours than you would believe paging through Burgee Collections hoping to find one of these five with an ID. I even used crowd sourcing by posting the unidentified flags to Sailing Anarchy, the crowd found one. If you have a creative way of identifying these burgees, I am listening. Thanks! These burgees came from somewhere...any ideas?] There s a new boat in town by Gary Schaffael SCCYC welcomes the newest boat of the fleet - the Tartan 4000, Odyssey She s 40 long, and comes with two fore stays - one with a self-tacking jib and one with a 155 reacher. The boat is built in in Cleveland Ohio, and this is the first one on the west coast. I intend to start racing it in the Sunset Series when it starts. It is docked at Mariner's Bay Marina. [Editor s hint: perhaps he may want crew to help sail this incredible boat! ;-)] Whoops!!
