WISCONSIN BOATING CLUB Membership Meeting March 4, 2019 Brookfield Civic Center Commodore, Duane Delaney, called the meeting to order at 7:06 p.m. We welcomed guests of Graubner s Ron and Heidi. Glad you could join us, and we look forward to hopefully seeing you again soon. Minutes Duane asked if there were any additions or corrections to the February Membership or Board Meeting minutes, that were posted in the Fleet Sheet. There were none. He asked for a motion to accept them as printed. Craig Lake made the motion, and Russ Weber seconded. The motion carried. Purser Donna Danowski was absent, so Duane read the report which had been sent via . Our beginning balance was $4, We had no income. Expenses were incurred for supplies for the club s booth at the Milwaukee Boat Show. Our ending balance was $4, Duane asked if there were any additions or corrections to the Purser s Report, and there were none. Todd Memmel made a motion to accept the report, and Linda Weber seconded. Membership and Marketing Travis Sarinske reported that he is still sending s to potential new members. Some seem to really want to attend. // He d like to make a video for next year s boat show, including footage from our summer cruises. He s asking that captains shoot some video, and Travis will edit. Programs Todd Memmel reported that tonight s program is a test of our boating skills and knowledge. There will be participation prizes! In April, Pete will provide his video of their 1987 and 1989 trips to the Bahamas, when they trailered their boats to Florida, launched, and boated to the Bahamas. For May, Dan Gall has consented to lead us in a basic, simple, what to do in case of an emergency First Aid presentation. June 3 rd will be our annual picnic. Because Dittmer s have property in the town of Genesee, Lisa has secured Sunset Park for the evening. Todd is working on the program for September. October will be our annual Pizza Meeting at Marty s in Delafield. // Todd said that the cruise sheets are here and ready for sign-ups. There will be possible date changes for Sarinske s cruise across the lake, July 31-August 4. He reminded everyone that Milwaukee may not host their annual 3 rd of July fireworks display this year. We will need to stay tuned. Cruise Manuals and Advertising Jim Kaun was not present, but it was reported that the advertising letters were sent out. They are working on the advertising, and Duane has several of the contracts. Todd sent a 2018 Cruise Manual around the room for members to make changes from last year. Travis suggested that our new members might like to have copies of our Cruise Manual. Safety Dan Gall reported that the annual Boat Inspection will be held on May 18 th. It will once again be held at Custom Wire in Muskego from 9 until noon. Coffee and donuts will be available. In order to boat with the club, an inspection is required. If you can t make it on the 18 th, you can arrange a private inspection with a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, or attend the inspection at South Shore Yacht Club in early June. A flier will be in the Fleet Sheet, and will include a checklist of what is required to pass. Craig Lake inquired as to how many boats might be needing an inspection. Todd said he would update him as he receives sign-ups. // Craig mentioned that there will be a Flair Shoot on June 6 th at SSYC. Our flairs do expire, so this is a great way to practice in case of an emergency. // Todd said he has extra copies of the current Boat U.S. issue, if anyone is interested. // Todd contacted Boat U.S. to see if a representative would like to present a program for our group, but instead, they sent us brochures on electric shock and drowning. They re available if anyone is interested. 2
Grievances None. Fleet Sheet Pete Zierden said he d like material by March 25. Legislative Liaison No report. Website Ren Rodee reported that cruises have been added to the site, and it is current. He asked that captains review the material, and make sure that the information is correct and current. He can add or delete anything you want included or excluded. He suggested that a good safety tool might be for captains to provide a float plan and for that to be on the website. // Todd said he would update Ren with any changes in Programs. Sunshine While grilling steaks during the February Freeze, Jim Kaun fell on the patio and broke part of his leg and sprained his ankle. Also, he and Robin are both fighting the flu. (Is it spring yet???) Old Business The Vice Commodore has gone through the club s books, and the audit was a success. New Business George Graubner reported that Tow Boat U.S. is holding a class on March 23 at SSYC, and it is $5.00 for members. There are sheets available with more information. // Sam Graubner said that she loves History, and asked if anyone might be interested. The cost would be minimal - then maybe go out to dinner afterward? Quite a few people seemed interested. Miscellaneous Ren asked if there has been any movement on existing vendors being listed on the website. We will discuss this at the next Board Meeting. Dates to Remember - April 1 Membership Meeting at Brookfield Civic Center 7:00 p.m. - April 15 Board Meeting at Zierden s 7:00 p.m. - May 6 Membership Meeting at Brookfield Civic Center 7:00 p.m. May 18 WBC Boat Inspection at Custom Wire/Muskego 9 TO 12 Taking a land cruise to Milton/Janesville regarding the Underground Railroad. It is the only site that can be toured Duane asked for a motion to adjourn the meeting. Dan Gall made a motion, and Pete Zierden seconded. The meeting adjourned at 7:40 p.m. THANK YOU to Russ and Linda Weber for providing snacks this evening. Much appreciated! Respectfully Submitted, Katie Memmel 3
Helpful tips! Ever had to replace and rewire a brand-new bilge pump? One that dwells in the depths of a shower sump, enjoys a symbiotic relationship with a float switch and is controlled via an inexplicably remote, panel-mounted three-way switch? You know, the kind that goes auto, off, on? Instead of just off, on? Unless you re a classical 12-volt genius, such a humble task can quickly morph into something that s really difficult, frustrating and time consuming (while you struggle with unhelpful wiring diagrams and YouTube how-to s). Especially if there s stuff like errant 6-circuit terminal blocks on the scene, along with electrical components festooning unconventionally colored wires. Here, however, is a helpful tactic -although maybe you ll think it s too elementary and old hat to even bother with. Next time you ve got to tear something apart and then correctly reassemble it, take a few moments, or seconds, or even minutes, pull out your Smartphone, tap into the camera function and snap some prior-to-discombobulating shots. And don t snap just one or two. Snap a bunch. From a variety of angles. With a decent light source. Because if you don t, I m going to go out on a limb here and predict that, with the certainty of yard bills and taxes, there will ultimately come a time in your very own DIY-or-die future when one picture, whether due to poor lighting, poor focus or some other freakish foible of fate, will not do the trick. And there you ll be, stuck, scratching your head, wondering if it s the damn red wire or the hot-purple one that gets screwed into that iffy terminal. One last thing. A boat company engineer recently told me that, before every boat show, he ventures into the engine room of every boat that will appear at the show and creates a video with his Smartphone. He makes sure to shoot virtually everything that s mechanical-, electrical- or plumbingrelated, from battery cables to fuel-hose hookups, and then s the works to his laptop so he can save it on a succinctly labeled memory stick. That way, he explained, if somebody calls me from the show with a question about some engineroom issue, I can just pop the appropriate memory stick into the ol laptop and see what they re talking about. This idea got me to thinkin, of course. Wouldn t it make sense to shoot my very own mini movie prior to my next component replacement? From a variety of angles, maybe with a little voice over and some modest finger pointing? And wouldn t such a thing ultimately save time and avoid heartache? Well, hmm... Mr. Spielberg move over, buddy! 4
In the winter of 1975 we took a vacation to the island of Treasure Cay located off of Abaco Island in the Bahamas. We fell in love with the place and in 1981 we purchase a Time Share Villa for the month of March. The Villa is still in family possession and used by my children. One of the rare instances in which a Time Share did work out. While there, we would rent a center counsel Boston Whaler to travel to the nearby islands for sight seeing, snorkeling and scuba diving. I always thought about how great it would be to bring my boat to this area. Boaters from Florida do it all summer long. In 1987 myself and two other members of the Wisconsin Boating Club decided to take the plunge. We obtained our wide load permits, where required, and off we went. Trailering to Palm Beach took two days and we spent 10 days in the Bahamas, and another two days to trailer back. The trip was such a experience that we repeated it in

United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Vessel Safety Inspection The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary have certified vessel examiners who will perform a free Vessel Safety Check ("VSC") at your boat. Our goal is simply to help make boating as safe as possible for you, your family and your friends, through education. Personal pleasure crafts only. WHEN: Saturday May 18 th, 2019 WHERE: Custom Wire Industries, Inc. S83 W18787 Saturn Dr Muskego, WI TIME: 9:00 a.m. Noon Coffee and Donuts will be served and underwritten by: WISCONSIN BOAT CLUB-A Family Boating Club 9
Safety reminders WHO HAS THE RIGHT OF WAY: Starboard: If any vessel approaches your boat from the starboard sector, you must keep out of its way. You are the give-way craft. Stern: If any vessel approaches your boat from the stern (from behind your boat) you should maintain your speed and course with caution. You are the stand-on craft. Be prepared with safety gear You can t always predict an emergency, so be prepared for any situation. Here are some essential items to keep on board no matter the size of your boat: Flashlight A flashlight and extra batteries can help you see around your boat in the dark and allow you to be seen if you run out of fuel or if your craft stalls. Duct tape Spring a leak? Temporarily bandage the hole with duct tape. Bucket Even if the boat isn t leaking, water may otherwise enter the vessel. A bucket can help you bail it out. First aid kit A properly equipped first aid kit, plus the knowledge on how to use it, is vital in case of an accident or medical emergency. Whistle As a recognized signal calling for help on the water, a waterproof whistle is another must-have. Lines These are critical for pulling someone in who has fallen overboard, securing your craft to the dock and tying down loose items in extreme weather. Mirror A mirror or any reflective object can signal for help. Garbage bags Use them as rain ponchos and protection for items on board. Fire extinguisher Just because you re on the water doesn t mean you can t have an onboard fire. All passengers should know the location of your fire extinguisher and how to use it. 10
