Super Boat International is the only official national and international sanctioning body for offshore powerboat racing in the world. The series has attracted many celebrity racers over the years, including Don Johnson, Kurt Russell, Chuck Norris, Bruce Jenner and Jason Priestley. With an estimated 20 million race fans attending Super Boat International races and a significant increase in membership and attendance over the past three years, Super Boat International is poised for future success. The rectangular racecourses average six miles in length, and the aptly named offshore boats power through the waves at speeds up to 200 mph. The action-packed races have attracted a large fan base, and super boats have even been highlighted in bigscreen productions such as the 2006 hit, Miami Vice, starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell. Also featured on NASCAR s Countdown to Green, The Today Show and in Forbes magazine, the superboats continue to attract new fans and keep loyal fans coming back for more. 3 Pre-Race Report 20th Annual Miami Super Boat Grand Prix Super Boat International Racing Series Miami, Florida April 17 th 19 th, th Annual Miami Super Boat Grand Prix Heats Up South Florida Offshore Racing is back with the 2010 Super Boat International season underway Miami, (April 5, 2010) Super Boat International (SBI) is excited to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Miami Super Boat Grand Prix. The Miami Grand Prix, April 16th through April 18 th, will host the world s fastest and most recognized vee bottom and catamaran style Super Boats racing along the famed Miami Beach. The place most famous for offshore powerboat racing will especially excite crowds during Sunday s (April 18th) offshore race along Miami Beach. It was South Florida making go-fast boats famous or powerboats making South Beach famous, either way today s most powerful and exciting boats will circle along 6.5 miles of the infamous beach. SBI is excited to bring the 2010 racing season opener to Miami. Starting the season off in Miami has been a great tradition, the temperatures are a little cooler than in the summer heat and it always seems like a fresh start, says John Carbonell, president and founder of Super Boat International. Boats begin arriving Friday (16th) and stage in Bicentennial Park, (Miami) where fans can see their favorite team up close. After their arrival on Friday, the race teams will test on Saturday from Sunday teams will race and compete in their select classes. Super Boats vary in sizes up to 50 feet in length and can reach speeds in calm water races in excess of 200 mph. The Super Boat season runs April through November with 8 events making up the National Championship title series and the final (9th) race of the season is the Key West World Championships. National races will take place in Biloxi, MS; Ft. Lauderdale, FL; Sarasota, FL; Michigan City, IN; New York, NY; Morehead City, NC; and the series championship event will be held in Clearwater Beach, FL. This year Super Boat International is producing the 30th annual Key West World Championships, the Super Bowl of all offshore racing events. This prestigious event always attracts avid fans and the best teams from around the world who compete in the weeklong Super Bowl of racing. 5 Super Boats Super Boat International races host some of the fastest and largest offshore power boats in the world. The boats have maximum length requirements of 50 fee, and are equipped with F-16 jet canopies. Race teams consist of a two-person team - a driver who controls the boat s steering and a throttleman responsible for operating up to four engines capable of producing more than 6,000 horsepower. Extreme speeds of up to 200 mph and rough waters make it impossible for a single person to steer and operate the throttles. The best race teams hone the partnership between driver and throttle man down to a science, and incorporate the most advanced technology into their machines to generate optimum speed. Super Boat International races offer an array of classes including: Super Boat Unlimited, Super Boat Vee Unlimited, Super Boat, Super Cat, Super Boat Vee Extreme, Super Boat Vee Limited, Turbine, Super Boat Stock (S) and Manufacturer Production (P1, P2, P3, P4, P5). There are several types of boats competing in the Super Boat races, but a majority of super boats found at events fall into two categories: V-bottom and Catamaran boats. V-Bottom Boats The boat s V-Bottom hull is designed to slice through rough water easily while the V-shaped bottom softens the up-anddown movement of the boat. The design offers a quick, smooth ride in rough water and is one of the most popular hull designs on the market. Most manufacturers and race teams make modifications to their boats in an effort to increase speed and minimize drag. Catamaran Boats Catamaran Boats, also known as Cats, are designed to skim the surface of the water. The boats are equipped with a planing hull, which lifts the boat partially out of the water. Planing hulls are typically flat and fast. Cats can achieve high speeds with less power than other models, and are easy to identify with their signature twin-hull design.

7 Event Vocabulary RACE VILLAGE or DRY PITS Area where boats are parked and spectators are allowed to view the race boats and their rigs. WET PITS Where the boats are staged after being craned into the water. Crew chiefs and teams work on their boats in this location prior to the race. FUELING The location, typically outside the race village, where all teams fuel boats with a required amount of fuel they have to purchase from the sanctioning body, which is part of the sponsorship package. HOT PITS Where the boats are craned into the water. PHYSICALS Required of drivers and throttlemen on test days and race days before they can attend the drivers meeting. DRIVERS MEETING Drivers and throttlemen are required to attend this meeting every race day morning. The meeting gives an overview of any changes to the course, the number of laps and the starting order of all boats and teams for each day of competition. Race Vocabulary ROOSTER TAIL The large column of water thrown out from the propeller. STEP HULL This consists of one or two steps molded in the hull near the stern. The step allows air under the hull, reducing friction and permitting about a 10 percent increase in speed. STUFF When a boat launches off a wave and stuffs the bow into the next wave. TURN BUOY The orange marker that signifies the turning point of the racecourse. YELLOW BUOY The marker that signifies the start/finish of the racecourse. BLOWOVER When a boat suddenly goes airborne and flips. ROLLOVER Can occur when a boat turns sharply at excessive speed. The boat literally rolls over on its side, either flipping upside down or rolling back to right side up. CANOPY The cockpit cover or hardtop provides substantial protection to the crew and encloses the crew inside a cockpit. CATAMARAN Also known as a cat, a twin-hulled boat that packs air and lifts the boat, causing it to actually fly across the top of the water or tops of the waves. V-BOTTOM The original performance v-shaped, hull-designed boat. CAVITATION When air is drawn into the propeller blades, causing the prop to slip. CHINE WALKING The boat dances from side to side on the chine, the lower edge of the hull. Normally caused by exceeding the hull s design speed or by poor balancing of the boat. FEATHERING Backing off the power when a boat becomes airborne so the engines do not over rev. KITING When a boat flies off a wave, raising the bow and flipping backward. LOWER UNIT The lower half of an outdrive or outboard that contains the drive gears, propeller shaft and the propeller. MILLING CIRCLE The area where boats circle in the water according to their actual race class prior to the start of a race. ORANGE SMOKE Becomes visible typically three minutes before the start of a race. It makes angel ships and teams aware that the race is about to start.
