4 Discovery the start of something amazing The desire to build a boat is the desire of youth, unwilling yet to accept the idea of a final resting place. When it comes, the desire to build a boat is one that cannot be resisted. In the beginning Arthur Ransome Rancundra s First Cruise In 1998 John and Caroline Charnley set out to find their perfect blue water cruising yacht, it was with a clear vision in mind. They wanted a yacht that could take them anywhere they chose in safety and comfort and, crucially, without the need for additional crew. She also had to have a sparkling performance, looks to be proud of and be a home-fromhome. A yacht with plenty of light and a great feeling of space where friends and family could be entertained in style. Known for his pragmatic, seaman-like approach to sailing, John Charnley brought a wealth of experience to the project: a veteran of the single-handed transatlantic and other long-distant races, the founder of the Sunsail charter company, boat-builder and a former airline pilot with a keen attention to detail. He brought together a talented team of a top naval architect and interior designer, engineers, management and highly skilled craftsmen. The ideal blue-water cruiser - the Discovery 55 luxury sailing yacht - was born. Since then the family has grown expansively, with the Discovery 58, Discovery 67, the Discovery 50 catamaran and, most recently, the Discovery 48.

5 The wind picked up to 22 knots but the wind-against-tide lumpiness didn t worry the Discovery. She merely dug her heels in and sliced through the chop at near hull speed despite being hard on the wind. Her high ballast ratio, low bulb keel and large semi-balanced rudder kept her tracking like the Paris Express, but all the time her motion through the oncoming waves was commanding. She exuded a feeling of quiet confidence a sensation that she would happily eat up the miles, regardless of sea state, while keeping her crew calm and more than comfortable. Boat International

6 Designed to perform The weather was awful but, as all three of us were experienced sailors, we decided to take her out. She behaved absolutely beautifully. We had half the main up, just a bit of staysail and we were creaming along at 9.5 knots. I thoroughly enjoyed the sail. For all our models achieving a balance between total speed, simple handling and easy motion is essential. The Discovery monohulls incorporate a deep forefoot, high-performance bulb lead keel, moderate sections aft, a semibalanced rudder and high ballast ratio.

8 Effortless handling This luxurious, supremely comfortable and beautifully crafted yacht comes with a million ocean miles of experience designed and built-in for drama-free world-girdling, but what s most remarkable is that this gale-taming passage-eater is unbelievably easy to sail single-handed. A combination of superb hull design, sail plan and deck layout provide effortless sailing and fast, easy passages. With lines leading to powerful, push-button electric winches in the cockpit, all sail trimming and reefing can be done by just one person. With the self-tacking jib, going about is as simple as just putting the wheel over. The rig is beautifully balanced and, combined with the hull shape and big protected rudder, delivers responsive, reliable handling in all conditions and on all points of sailing. An essential feature of all Discovery yachts is enjoying the ease of being able to command your boat at the raised helm seat within the saloon. With the plotter and radar to hand, together with control of the autopilot, you can do a watch staying warm, dry and comfortable. More than this you stay in contact with the crew. It is this, as much as the easy sail handling that gives you the freedom to sail with just two of you.

10 Home-from-home luxury Life on board is luxury, simply home-from-home, the excellent battery and power management scheme allow us to use kettle, toaster, steam oven and the cappuccino machine all the way across the Atlantic! Light-filled and welcoming Stuart Smith Discovery 55 owner As you step aboard a Discovery, you quickly notice the finer points. The cockpit seating is deep and sculpted to ensure real comfort and support. There are wonderful dolphin-watching seats forward, as well as seats on the aft deck. Hand-holds are just where you want them. But what makes a Discovery yacht so special? Certainly it is the superb craftsmanship; the inviting home-from-home feeling and a host of details that make it really safe and easy to use. But what makes a Discovery so different is the light-filled raised saloon. Whether entertaining or just relaxing you can enjoy the scenery around you at anchor or on passage. And the extraordinarily comfortable raised navigation area is a masterpiece. It is a real command centre. Here you can sit and have an all-round view. The ergonomic and innovative galley will appeal to the most demanding of chefs, with its generous work surfaces, cavernous fridge and freezer and ample storage that make life easy on longer cruises. Spacious and luxurious, the owner s cabin has a king-sized centreline double bed. The hand-crafted interior joinery and meticulous attention to detail really set a Discovery yacht apart. The interior not only looks good in harbour, it also works well at sea. With a Discovery you take the scenery with you.

14 Quality and safety built without compromise Discovery put owners and safety first; everything is diagnosable and accessible and everything has a backup option. The panoramic views are a pronounced wow factor but for me it s the yard s meticulous attention to detail for what liveaboards really need and the finish quality that stand Toby Hodges Yachting World out. When only the best will do Great care and thought have gone into the design, selection and fitting of equipment to ensure reliability and performance. Consider cabling. Hidden and mostly out of mind as it is, many boat builders cut costs using automotive cable. In a salt water environment this can break down in time, leading to shorts, failure and possibly even fire on board. Although it costs more, we use only special tinned multi-strand cable and, where wires terminate in potentially damp areas, terminal sleeves that not only clamp the cable correctly, but also shrink to release an epoxy resin, making the joint completely waterproof. For power, there are two separate sources of 12 volts for engine and generator start, and two sources of 24 volt supply, with 24 bolt batteries designed for live-aboard cruising. There are also two sources of 240 volt (110v) on board. We use top-quality circuit breakers to protect systems - and labels big enough to read without glasses! Multiply this attention to detail throughout the entire design and construction and the picture builds: quality, reliability and safety. All of this means that you can enjoy your cruising with real peace of mind.
