Southern Maryland Sailing Association, Inc. P.O. Box 262, Solomons, MD Website: Editor: Lisa Feusahrens the clew AUGUST 2004 Volume 34, No 8 COMMODORE By the time that you receive this August Clew, you should have received your ballots for the election of Officers and Governors and for approval of two motions. Jim Young, the past Commodore, has put together the slate of Governors and Officers for election to the 2005 BOG. Thank you, Jim. The slate is not complete with the Social and Facilities Governor's positions remaining unfilled. Additional candidates may declare in writing to the BOG 30 days prior to the annual meeting his/her intentions. The SMSA by-laws in Article III, Section 6 explain the complete process. There will be no nominations from the floor at the Annual Meeting. The other option is for the 2005 BOG to appoint the Governors at the November BOG meeting when they can officially first conduct business. The 2004 BOG has prepared two motions for member approval. By participation in the voting process, the SMSA membership will make the final determination for or against each of the motions. Please vote your conscience - but do VOTE, so that we have the maximum member participation. These two motions are part of the legacy provided by the 2004 BOG. Be sure to vote for your Member of the Year! The completed ballots may be mailed to our Post Office Box in Solomons or held until the September 12, 2004 Annual Business Meeting for tally. In mid July, SMSA s premier contribution to the Chesapeake Bay racing program conducted by L. G. Raley and a host of volunteers, The Screwpile Light House Challenge, took place. This race series had the participation of at least 170 competitors. I hope that you had a chance to take part in either the races themselves or to have volunteered in the on the water or ashore activities or just partied. A full month of Junior Program Day Camp sessions, Wednesday night Big Boat and Thursday night Small Boat races will have been completed. The month of August continues with the same pace for racing and cruising and rendezvous. The BOG extends an invitation to all members to attend our next meeting at 1930 hours August 3 at the clubhouse. The August draft agenda is else where in this issue of The Clew. As always, I look forward to seeing many of you on the water or ashore as we enjoy our myriad of SMSA activities together during August. Please be sure to stop by and say hello and discuss any topics that you choose. Walt Rupp, Commodore jrupp@chesapeake.net (301)

To Mary s many friends, I thank you for the love and support that you have given her, and me, through these years. The combination of my desolate voice and the airplanes overhead made it hard to hear my eulogy to my wonderful wife. I wanted the world to know how I felt about her. Several of you have asked for a copy of my notes. Any who do, please me at my address in the Yearbook and I will simply attach a copy to a return to you. RACE 2004 Small Boat Program 1-Day Regatta The Small Boat Program s annual 1-Day Regatta was held on June 26, The event, billed as our Thursday Night on a Saturday, began under a slightly overcast sky which later yielded to a fine sunny afternoon. Steady northwest winds at 8 to 9 knots were present throughout the event. Twelve boats competed in two classes. There were three catamarans in the Multi hull Class and nine Mono hulls in the general Portsmouth Class. Principal Race Officer John Weir was able to get three long races completed by the end of the afternoon. The racing was tight and competitive, and the overall outcomes were not known until the final competitor crossed the finish line. The Small Boat Program utilizes Portsmouth handicapping, a timeon-time system in which the handicaps are adjusted based on the measured wind speed. In the Multihull Class, Patrick Ragen and his wife Lisa took top honors with two firsts and a second. Patrick is a regular competitor on Thursday nights and sailed three fine races to garner the top spot. In an interesting note, all three boats in this class were husband and wife teams. In the Portsmouth Class, local Lightnings took the top two spots. Shawn and Laura Stanley, with crew Mike Lorenzini, earned first place overall with two firsts and a second. Dave and Jacki Meiser and crew Barry Friedman had a solid day and were rewarded with second place. Sailing in only their second small boat regatta were Potomac River Sailing Association members Bob and Lisa Fleck in an Interlake. The full results are provided under Race Results in the back of this issue. Many, many thanks to everyone who volunteered their time on shore and on the water. This event would not have been possible without their efforts and dedication. Don t forget that the 8 th Annual Invitational Regatta is scheduled for September 25 and 26. Anyone interested in racing, crewing, or working Race Committee is encouraged to contact me. Keith Jacobs, Small Boat Program Coordinator hokiesailor@verizon.net Newport to Bermuda Race Once again I competed in the 2004 Newport to Bermuda Race as the Officer in Charge aboard the Naval Academy vessel Lively, a Navy 44. Lively took first in IMS Class 2 and was 21 st overall in the fleet of 159. Lively had a shot at the overall win until the wind shut down 100 miles out and some of the faster boats were able to escape. I can report that riding the Gulf Stream was better than in any of my previous four Newport to Bermuda races. The meander in the Gulf Stream was forming as the race was departing Newport. The crew of Lively correctly estimated the location of the stream and rode the axis for 120 miles while receiving a 3.5 to 5.5 knot push.

I have done three Annapolis to Bermuda races and have been on a winner in two of those. Dan Trammell, dantramm@earthlink.net MEMBERSHIP As we move into the mid Summer season, I am pleased to report that our 2004 membership has already exceeded last years record breaking totals. At this time our membership breakdown includes 16 Emeritus, 49 Individual, 143 Family, and 71 Junior memberships. The total number of SMSA members is 430 of which 359 are voting members. Thanks again for everyone s continued recruiting efforts. The SMSA Board of Governors has approved the following new memberships. Please make them feel welcome as you meet them at some of our SMSA activities. Charlie and Connie Schmitz are sponsored by Rod Schroeder. They live in Herndon VA, but will be retiring to the Solomons area in late summer. They are shopping for a cruising sloop in the 35 foot range to fill their slip on Mill Creek. Charlie has sailed off and on since childhood and has recently been attending J-World in Annapolis. They are interested in cruising, racing, and social events while making new friends in the Club and the Solomons area. Welcome Aboard. John Dixon is sponsored by Laura and Shawn Stanley. He lives in California, MD and has been a long time race program participant as regular crew aboard Rhumb Punch. He has also made some mark roundings aboard Synergy, Foxtrot Corpen, Priority One, Elan, Break Away, and Goldfish. You have also probably tasted some of his fine catering services at some of our local functions. Welcome Aboard. SMSA also welcomes returning members Mardy and Dora Millen. They keep their Rogers 28 Marlin at Spring Cove Marina and are active participants in all aspects of SMSA club activities. Welcome Back Aboard. Rod Schroeder, Membership Governor rodschroeder@comcast.net, (410) CRUISE Memorial Day Weekend As usual for every Memorial Day weekend I can remember, the weather predictions were all over the place. Regardless, several boats left Solomons for Oxford on Saturday morning. We sailed into northerly breezes up the bay only to have the wind die as we approached the Choptank. With storm clouds gathering, Walkabout hosted a small Happy Hour for the crews of Rusty Nayle and Spiced Rhumb, while Reflections and Deshandra joined the group in Mears for an on-land cocktail party. Spray arrived late and anchored in Plaindealing Creek. Sunday morning the sun came out and several of us headed ashore to explore Oxford. We met each other at the Annual Art Show which was really great. With the weather predictions calling for storms we decided to stay put at anchor and a few boats left to return to home ports. A combined onland Happy Hour with the one-week cruisers was really a lot of fun. The Monday trip back south was a little bit of everything limited visibility, a little rain, a little sun, a little wind (right on the nose) and a motor run back to Solomons. We all had fun, made new friends, caught up with old friends and had a memorable SMSA weekend. Dave and Lois Zonderman, Walkabout Sail274@optonline.net, (973) Two Week Cruise June 18-July 3 The Thursday evening before the start of the cruise brought a tremendous display of thunder, brilliant lightning, heavy rain and strong wind. The forecast was for more of the same for Friday. The only cruiser brave enough to defy the odds on Friday was Rusty Nayle with Rod Schroeder as single crew. The day and the evening turned out to

be ideal for cruising and the concert at the college. On Saturday, Frank and Rita Gerred on Calypso, Jerry and Marilyn Eastwood on Lynn Dee and Ron and Kris Hoile on Nimue arrived in time for the rendezvous. A special person attending was Bill Hooper and crew from Crisfield aboard Exemplare. They enlivened the evening with stories and musical entertainment. Not to be forgotten were racers Jerry Taylor and crew on Artful Dodger and Rigel with Mark and Cheri DeLaVergne who became cruisers at the beginning of the rendezvous. A beautiful Sunday morning brought departure for all the boats to their home ports. Monday, June 21 found 7 boats headed north. After a beautiful day with gradually increasing wind we gathered in Dunn Cove off of Harris Creek. The following boats anchored separately, Easy Time with Ron and Suzie Williams and Tipper, Rusty Nayle with Rod and Pat Schroeder, Runaway with Matt and Marty Miller, Quintet with Gene and Lois Norris, Sea Mistress with Al Tittel and friend Manny Raffaelle, Kalypso with Fred Siesseger doing a solo and Lynn Dee with Jerry and Marilyn Eastwood. Social hour was aboard Lynn Dee with the usual assortment of delicious snacks. Tuesday morning we left under cloudy skies and wind from the southwest. We traveled through Knapps Narrows and then north headed for the Wye River. A planned party with friends of Jerry and Marilyn who have a home on the Wye was scuttled by a forecast of severe storms for the evening so we all headed for Dividing Creek. Who did we find there but Artful Dodger with Jerry and Donna Taylor aboard. The rains came, thunder and some lightning, but not a lot of wind. We dodged the bullet, and by 2000 it was nice, so the Taylor s rowed over to Lynn Dee for a visit. The next morning Runaway and Rusty Nayle departed for Baltimore to attend the Catalina Rally and Artful Dodger left for Annapolis. The rest of us stayed to enjoy the tranquility of the area and do some hiking on the trails. A 275 year old Holly tree was found on one of the trails by Jerry and Marilyn, nicely cared for by the park service people. On Thursday, June 24 we headed for Rock Hall going through Kent Narrows. We stayed at Rock Hall Landing Marina for two nights, enjoying their pool and enjoyable dinners out. On Saturday Sea Mistress had to return to Solomons so we missed their company for the rest of the cruise. Al and Manny provided some good stories of their adventures so we were sorry that they had to leave. Al reported later that on their way south they had the "rail in the water", a great sailing day. The Saturday night destination was Still Pond but Easy Time reported that it was very full by mid morning so the decision was to proceed to Back Creek off of the Sassafras River. The water was "skinny" so bottom watching was required. A lovely Happy Hour was spent on Quintet and we all enjoyed a beautiful evening. On Sunday Kalypso and Lynn Dee left at 0700 for Georgetown for a scheduled stay at the Skipjack Cove Marina. It was a gorgeous ride up the river, especially since it was too early for the power boaters to be stirring up the waters. Quintet headed south intending to join us later. Easy Time elected to stay in Back Creek after they surveyed the large number of boats in the Georgetown area. They were joined by Koel with Gresh and Rene Sackett aboard. Fred, Jerry and Marilyn enjoyed hiking over to Georgetown, the pool and finally dinner on the veranda of the marina. Monday's destination was Havre de Grace for two nights. Rusty Nayle rejoined us after the Catalina Rally. It was interesting to learn that the city had an eleven foot surge of water from Isabel and there was extensive damage to the water front. A large group of AmeriCorps workers were putting it back together but there is still much to do. We did manage to have two lovely Happy Hours and nice dinners out plus ice cream at the local favorite spot. On Wednesday, June 30 we left for Sillery Bay off the Magothy River. What little wind we had was on the nose so it was motoring all the way. The anchorage wasn't too crowded behind Dobbins Island and we had a delightful Happy Hour aboard Rusty Nayle where we reviewed the day s travels and made plans for our travels to Galesville the next day. Again a motoring day to Galesville but we were all early arrivals so had good anchoring spots opposite Pirates Cove. Happy Hour was aboard Easy Time and as we talked about dinner

ashore and watched the clouds we decided to be prudent and head to our boats before the rain came, which it did. But the wind was light, so it turned out to be a lovely evening after the rain was over, quiet and comfortable. The destination for Friday was Hudson Creek off the Little Choptank and we all left before An exception was Koel who headed for Oxford to visit friends. The four remaining boats from our cruise were the first to be anchored. Later, eight others chose "our spot" for the evening. And what a night for ending the cruise. The sky was clear, winds light, warm but not uncomfortable. Those that stayed awake saw a gorgeous, full moon, a very special sight. It would have been a joy to have had many more SMSA cruisers there that night. In summary, we would like to tell you more about Fred Siesseger. This was his first cruise with SMSA and he was a great cruising companion. We decided that his wife Sharon did a great job of preparing him for the trip because he faithfully presented with lovely snacks at each Happy Hour, consistently held together with toothpicks, therefore achieving the nickname of "Toothpick Freddie". We are pleased that you joined us and hope that you will join as many cruises as you can. Also, on their first long cruise were Rod and Pat Schroeder and it is also hoped that they will have the chance to cruise often, they are great companions. Saturday presented some sailing on the way home on a lovely day. Everyone was home around noon. We traveled approximately 372 miles, spent nine nights at anchor, six in marinas. It was judged to be a delightful cruise with "proper happy hours" with great company and a relaxing two weeks. Jerry and Marilyn Eastwood, Cruise Leaders Post Cruise Report July 4 Cruise to Crisfield boats braved the heat; Serenity, Reflections, Calypso, The Baby and Nimue. Serenity had a full crew with Beth, Lauren, Will and Russell Miller. Reflections also had a full crew with Charlotte and Bill Mahood. We all enjoyed a nice motor-sail and once in Crisfield had mile per hour winds which made docking a treat. Crisfield isn t known for their fireworks; however, they gave us a good show Saturday evening. On Saturday we visited the shops and walked around town. As always the ice cream was worth the trip to town. On Sunday the breeze slowed a little and once in Kedges Straits it died altogether just a shore breeze and we motor-sailed back to our home ports. No anchor dragging, no storms, no stories. Just a fun cruise. We ll do it again! Kris and Ron Hoile, Cruise Leaders Governor's Cup Rendezvous Cruise August 6-8 Here is a great opportunity to sail to St. Mary's City and party! The Governor's Cup Race begins in Annapolis on Friday evening 8/6/2004 and sails to St. Mary's City for the finish. If you want to be an early bird, you can see the finish, usually with a spinnaker flying some time early on Saturday morning, at Church Point. Or you may anchor near the opening of Horse Shoe Bend at 38 º11.46 ' North and 76º 26.38' West on the St. Mary's River. The racers will need the college dock space to off load crew as they do not carry a tender. Brigadoon will listen for SMSA cruiser check in at 1200 on channel 72 on the way down to St. Mary's City. If you cannot make the Friday departure, cruise down on Saturday but be in time for our raft up between 1600 and Then we will count sterns for cruise points. Later in the evening we will anchor separately and then dink ashore to join the post race party. Sunday we sail home. Please join us! Call or with your intentions. Walt and Jan Rupp, Cruise Leaders jrupp@chesapeake.net, (301) Two fleets of SMSA boats headed to Crisfield for July 4, one from the Patuxent and one from the Potomac. We had a friendly and efficient greeting from Bill Hooper and the Somers Cove staff. Five

One Week Cruise before Labor Day We are planning a one-week plus cruise to Chestertown and Annapolis beginning Saturday August 28. The schedule is in the yearbook and includes St. Michaels on the Miles River side, a lay day in Chestertown and a day in Annapolis. You should make your own reservations for St. Michaels on Sunday August 29 and Chestertown for August 31 and September 1. The Chestertown Marina (410) , says they can accommodate us on those dates (I told them I thought we would be 6-8 boats). Annapolis is on a first come, first available basis, and we have found in previous years that we have no problem if we arrive around 10 AM for moorings in Spa Creek or slips in Ego Alley. Many of us in previous years have enjoyed going to the Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre on the night there. This is an outdoor amateur theater and it is usually well done. Saturday, September 4 will be the final performance of the musical Crazy for You. The tickets are $12, $10 for seniors. You call ahead to make a reservation but only pay for and pick up the tickets on the evening of the performance (410) Our cruise will link up over Labor Day with the Labor Day weekend cruise lead by Pat Kimmel, and can be linked with the one week cruise on the Choptank organized by Dave and Pat Marchant. Do make your reservations early and join us on this cruise. Please let us know in advance if you plan to join us so that we can communicate directly with you about any further specifics. David and Sally Arbuthnot, Blue Heron darbuthnot@comcast.net, (410) Labor Day Extended Cruise September 3 6 book incorrectly states the distance as 26 NM; the actual distance is approximately 43 NM. Cruisers who are interested in shortening this first leg by going into the Rhode or South River should call or us. Happy hour aboard Reflections will begin around 1700 hours. On Saturday morning, September 4, we will sail into Annapolis to the City Dock. Sunday will be a late start back to the Rhode River where we will again anchor for the night before returning to Solomons on Monday, September 6. We will be monitoring VHF channel 9 throughout the cruise. Dock space and moorings at the City Dock are available on a first come, first served basis. Dock space may be rented in a slip or on the bulkhead at an hourly (maximum of 3 hours) or daily rate. The hourly rate is $6.00/hr for boats up to 50' long, electrical hookup included. The overnight rate is $2.00/ft, electrical hookup not included. Heads and showers are available. There are no hourly rates at the moorings; the overnight fee for use of a mooring is $ The moorings are restricted to boats no longer than 45' with some restricted to a maximum of 35'. For overnight customers, checkout time is noon the next day. The Harbormaster s office is open from 0800 hours until 2100 hours. The office operates 3 boats; a multi-functional patrol boat primarily used for safety, rescue, navigational, law enforcement, and security-related reasons; a pump-out boat operated as a convenience to boaters; and a 17' Boston Whaler primarily used for administering the public moorings. They may be contacted by telephone at (410) , or hailed on VHF channel 09 or 17. To see what is happening in and around Annapolis during the Labor Day week-end go to Annapolis is a maritime city with lots of history, great restaurants and gift shops. Patty Kimmel and Rich Freeman pkimmel@ftbfcu.org and freemanr@erols.com, (703) Join us for the Labor Day week-end cruise to Annapolis. On Friday, September 3, we are scheduled to sail to Whitehall Bay and anchor for the night, weather conditions permitting. The year

Exploring the Choptank September 4-12 Join us for a leisurely week exploring the Choptank River and its many interesting destinations. While our initial day is over 30 nm, the remainder of the week should be made up of short day sails with ample time for side trips. We plan to be on station at our initial stop (Dunn Cove on Harris Creek) by 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 4. From there we will go to San Domingo Creek which will give us backdoor (dinghy) access to St. Michael's for Sunday and Monday (Labor Day). Next we plan to visit Cambridge, which will be our most easterly destination. In Cambridge we will plan on staying at the Cambridge Municipal Yacht Basin (410) The Chesapeake Cruising Guide that I have indicates that the Cambridge Yacht Club (410) , is also in the Municipal Yacht Basin. When we leave Cambridge we will have a short hop to La Trappe Creek and then continue on the next day navigating to the Tred Avon and Peach Blossom Creek. I understand that there are some accommodations at the Town Dock for those that wish to visit Easton (I have never done so from the water.). From there we will come back to Oxford on Friday, September10. Those that wish can find marina accommodations in Oxford. Crockett Bros. Boatyard (410) ; Mears Yacht Haven (410) and several others. When we leave Oxford on Saturday, we will start heading home stopping in Hudson Creek on the Little Choptank (this is a change from the original schedule) for the night and our last raft. On Sunday our flotilla will return home. I have opened a topic under Cruises for the Choptank Cruise for questions or to indicate that you would like to participate in the cruise. If you have navigation notes about any of these destinations please let me know and I will compile them and distribute them. Dave and Pat Marchant, Cruise Leaders Illumination Cor93vette@aol.com, (410) cell (410) Two Week Cruise South to Hampton Sept Join us as we sail Nimue South to Hampton. We ll start the cruise Saturday, September 17 in the Patuxent. We plan to anchor in Mill Creek on the St. Mary s side and then move to Mill Creek, Solomons side on Sunday to attend the annual business meeting and then head south on Monday. Our destination will be Hampton where we have marina reservations at Hampton Public Piers. Hampton has a revitalized waterfront, the new Cousteau Society Museum, an Air and Space Museum and Imax Theatre. On the way back up the Bay we have reservations at Urbana Yachting Center on September 23. We will attempt to follow the schedule as published in the yearbook with one exception. On the September14 we plan on anchoring in Dymer Creek, not Indian Creek. We ll tie up at the Bennett s in Indian Creek on the return. Dave and Carol should be back from their cruise by then and we ll stop by for a visit and pot luck dinner. Please let us know if you plan on making the trip. We ll need to firm up the marina reservations by the middle of August. If you plan on meeting us at any time, please let us know and stay in touch via radio in case our exact locations change with the weather.
