Sail Solomons, located on Solomons Island and homeported at the Zahniser s Yachting Center, is owned by retired Navy Commander Jeff Carlsen and his wife Kami Carlsen. Jeff s love for sailing started at four years old and has stayed with him ever since. He, his wife, and his four children share the passion together, so much so that after Jeff retired from the Navy, the family spent two years on their 45 foot sailboat and sailed over 12,000 miles hitting multiple different locations and countries. After their adventures, the Carlsen s took over Sail Solomons in Sail Solomons offers as a wide variety of services that tailor to every side of sailing. Their sailing school tailors to beginners wanting to get an ASA (American Sailing Association) certification all the way up to advanced sailors. They have specialized private courses, Caribbean courses, and instructor training courses. The rapidly growing water sport is being held as a Friday-Saturday weekend event. The Opening Ceremony takes place on Friday, Aug. 26 with a traditional ritual noted as the Dotting of the Eye. Following that event will also be Blessing of the Boats. Admission is free for both days. On Saturday, the first race starts at 9 a.m., and from there on it is nonstop action for the rest of the day. Not only is there the opportunity to witness the teams paddle, but there is also an opportunity to explore the island as well as visit a special kid s area to unwind. There is also no telling what might be seen along the Riverwalk. Food is available in a food court specially prepared for the occasion. They also have mate s courses, courses about marine weather, docking, electronic navigation, and systems courses. Their Caribbean course is more like a specialized vacation. Clients will spend one week on luxury monohull or catamaran flotillas in the Caribbean waters, pursuing an ASA certification or just the betterment of their sailing skills and knowledge. Besides the sailing school, Sail Solomons offers daysailer rentals. Their fleet of Catalina daysailers is available for full or half-day rentals. You can also become a member of their sailing club, which gives members access to the daysailer or cruising fleet for what they describe as low cost and stress-free sailing. Members of the sailing club have access to the fleet of boats for a certain amount of days each year for a set price. All you have to do is sail and Sail Solomons will take care of everything else. According to their website, members also enjoy social events, crew networking, discounts on courses, Caribbean flotillas and more. Sail Solomons will also deliver your yacht. According to the website, experienced Captains, licensed with the US Coast Guard, are available to captain your charter or deliver your yacht with or without you onboard.
