1 February 2013 Volume 43 Number 2 Despite the crazy weather We had a great January. We opened the year with a fun, low key New Years Eve Party. Then we had a great banquet the most fun I ve had on land in longer than I can remember. Several members showed up at the club the Sunday following the banquet hoping to race their Lasers only to be held at the dock by super foggy and windless conditions so they started a puzzle instead (finally completed at the Superbowl party). Racing in January wasn t a total loss, as several crews cheated mother nature, and headed south to race. Rhumb Punch & crew made the trek to Key West, three Buccaneer crews headed to Key Largo, and Mark Witte and Jeff Moore took the VX-1 to Davis Island Yacht Club in Tampa, Florida. Many folks braved cold and harsh conditions to get out to the January Commodore s Dinner. Tim Flaherty s unique cabbage and kielbasa recipe won the door prize of a bottle of wine.and that brings us to February. We ve got a really fun schedule planned. Our February Commodore s Dinner theme will be Summer Time. Again this month I m putting up a bounty of one bottle of wine for the dish that best exemplifies that summertime feeling. I don t know about you, but I m excited about our 1920 s Speakeasy night Saturday February 16 th. The Speakeasy party is going to be a great night out complete with costumes & band. There is a flyer on the next page with more information on that event. Despite the icy roads and chilling temperatures, spring is just around the corner. Frostbite racing is less than 30 days away! Be sure to attend the upcoming training events. We ve got some projects going on around the clubhouse. You will most likely see the remodeling going on in the bar area, what you might not notice is smaller things like improvements to the insulation & lighting. Hopefully all the efforts that are going on will improve the comfort & access to your clubhouse. Be sure to check out SMSA on the web. You can keep up with the calendar at (it s a Google calendar, you can sync it to your own). On the homepage you can also link to the Yahoo! group SMSA Crew which is a crew finding tool we launched last fall that has already proven to be successful in linking boats and crews. I look forward to seeing you around the club. SMSA is looking for a Clew Editor. Do you like desktop publishing? Are you interested in keeping up with SMSA events. Would you like to help others keep up with SMSA events? If you re interested Mark Witte and Jeff Moore at the VX-1 Mid-Winters commodore@smsa.com

2 "We want beer!" Prohibition-era liquor establishments were known as Speak-easies (as they were publicly a big shhhhh!) In the 1920's the 18th amendment prohibited the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages. Popular fashion included long pearl necklaces, feather headdresses, flapper dresses and fedora's (men's hats now popular today!), popular music included the Charleston & Blues. Speak-easies were in back rooms of "cover businesses" like a funeral home of which those that entered had to give a password. Join us for a fun night the SMSA Clubhouse on Feb. 16th from 7pm-10pm for an evening in the 1920's, listen to period music by the Pax Rats, come in your favorite 1920's attire, enjoy hors d oeuvres AND alcoholic beverages! Music & food 7pm sharp! Advance reservations online or at happy hour on Friday's are $15 ($20 at the door). Password upon reservation. Members & their guests welcome! Junior Program Ed Sierra junior@smsa.com The schedule of camps and classes is posted on the Junior Page at The Junior Program committee is still finalizing sailing instructors for the summer. 3 Commodore s Dinner Theme: Summer Friday, February 22nd, 7pm It may be February, but summer is just around the corner. Bring a dish that inspires you or that is your summer favorite. Commodore s Night Drink Specials Corona and Corona Light: $2 Margaritas: $3 February Bar Special Miller Lite 2/$3 The Rules Have Changed! Every four years, the Racing Rules of Sailing change. The new rules now apply. You can't play the game if you don't know the rules. The North U 2013 US SAILING Racing Rules & Tactics Seminar covers the rules (new and old) and related tactics. Taught by Understanding the Racing Rules author Dave Perry and North U. Director Bill Gladstone. Includes the Rules & Tactics Seminar Workbook pdf written specifically for this course by Dave Perry and Bill Gladstone and a variety of interactive exercises, quizzes, and rules scenarios as well as rules and tactics analysis of racing SMSA! Course spans two 3-hour evening sessions. Wednesday February 27 & March 6 6-9pm Register with NorthU prior to the start of the course at Then come and view the course on the big screen at the club and discuss the rules after class with your fellow sailors! All SMSA Members and crew can sign up at the US Sailing Member rate of $95 if attending the course at the SMSA clubhouse. The Clew, February 2013 Page 3

4 2012 Small Boat Hero Award Winner Mark Witte The following are highlights of Cruise Program activity during the past month: Presented cruising awards at the annual SMSA Awards Dinner. Still have several awards to deliver to recipients who were unable to attend. Updated Cruise Program Chair Appendix H in the SMSA Policy Manual. Began to make updates to the cruise section of the SMSA web page. What is the status of the new web page interface that has been in development for several years? Submitted monthly Cruising Corner article for the Clew. The following near term Cruising Program activities are planned: The cruise planning meeting will be held at the clubhouse on Saturday, 2 Feb 2013 from In addition to scheduling some of our routine favorite destinations there has been some interest in discussing the following: Cruise to Washington DC over the 4 th of July timeframe. Cruise to Long Island Sound. Labor Day cruise to Crisfield for the Crab Festival. If scheduled, this event will require early reservations due to popularity. The 2013 DelMarVa Rally will be held in mid June. Contact information and details have been provided in previous Clew articles. Although this is not an SMSA organized cruise, my plan is to put it on the SMSA cruise schedule so that cruise points and cruise miles can be awarded to any SMSA boater who might decide to participate in the event. A draft of the cruise schedule will be posted on the web site as soon as possible after the cruise planning meeting. Final tweaks will be made in time to meet the deadline for publishing the yearbook. Rod Schroeder SMSA Cruise Chairman rodschroeder@comcast.net, The Clew, February 2013 Page 4
