1 YACHTING NEW ZEALAND CLUB SURVEY 2009 SURVEY RESPONSE Number of surveys issued for completion: 125 Number of completed surveys returned: % of surveys were completed and returned to Yachting New Zealand. Blank survey forms were distributed to affiliated Yacht Clubs in February 2009 with a requested return date of 30 April. To capture a greater response, the deadline was extended and significant work was done by Regional Support Officers to follow up with Clubs. Page 1

(Include all seniors, juniors and all forms of members) Responses often came with an explanation of how family memberships had been presented within the answer, indicating that respondents were confused about how to deal with family memberships when answering the question. (Please include here all juniors, youth, adults and senior members) How many family memberships do you have at your Club? (Do you know the number of individuals that you family memberships amount to? If so, how many? ) An average family size of three people was assumed where a Club was not able to provide an accurate number. The same methodology will be used in the future. 6 We asked the following question Over the last 12 months, has your Club s total membership increased, stayed the same or decreased? Of the 99 respondents increase 21% st ayed t he same 43% decrease 36% In 2007, 42% of clubs represented a membership increase, 20% decreased, and 33% said that membership levels stayed the same. 8 AGE DEMOGRAPHICS Age split in 2009 Adult (19 years and over) 87% Youth (15-19 years) 4.5% Junior (under 15 years) 8.2% The proportion of Junior members (aged under 15 years) has decreased since its peak two years ago, and the proportion of youth members is fewer. Still, 87% of all Club members are aged over 19 years. 79 clubs answered this question. 9 SAILING HAVE A GO! Approximately 3,000 children have achieved a sense of capability, leadership and confidence in Sailing Have a Go! in the last calendar year. 23 yacht clubs reported that new junior members were introduced to the club through Yachting New Zealand s Sailing Have a Go! programme. Of those that haven t established a subsite: 11 weren t aware of the offer 4 said it was too restrictive for their needs 30 already have an established website 14 don t have somebody to set up and maintain the site 7 don t see the need for one 3 had other reasons (Some ticked more than one box when answering this question) Question 2.3: Does your club or a key person acting on behalf of the club receive a copy of Briefings Yachting New Zealand s official e-newsletter? 25 Approximately how many volunteers work for your Club each season? Club response indicated that nationwide over 2630 people are volunteering their time to assist with the running of our affiliated yacht clubs. As the graph below indicates just over half of the Clubs that responded have 20 or fewer volunteers working at their Club.
