1 Right On Replicas, LLC Step-by-Step Review * PLA (Chinese) Type 039G Submarine 1:200 Scale Hobby Boss Model Kit #82001 Review Designed in 1994 for attacking both other submarines and surface ships with torpedoes, the submarine uses a modern teardrop-shape hull for underwater performance. The hull incorporates four rudders and is propelled by a single propeller. For quieter operation, the engine was mounted with shock absorbers and the hull is plated in rubber tiles for sound deadening. Primary weapon for the Type 039 is the 533 mm Yu-4 torpedo. The main sensor is the medium-frequency sonar mounted in the bow of the submarine, with passive and active modes, which is used for both search and attack. In addition, the system offers a method of underwater communications, and also functions as a torpedo approach warning system. This is Kit #82001 in the current catalog. This is a Skill Level 1 kit. It has 48 parts and comes molded in light grey styrene on one tree with a left and right hull, a display stand, one photo etch propeller, waterslide decals and instructions. The instructions are on the back of the box and are very basic. There is a small but crisp decal sheet but, unfortunately, numerous mistakes both in assembly and part numbering. Use the full review as a guide for successful completion of this kit. The finished dimensions are approximately Length: 17¼, Width: 2½, On Stand Height 6⅛. (The tower should have parts #17 #18 on each side. (Pic 9) NOTE: This shows the instruction errors on the box. Look at part #B 18 and B 19 these are REVERSED in the instructions. The larger fins go to the BACK of the sub, Smaller to the coning tower sides. ALSO NOTE the amount of mounting holes it shows there are only holes for 6 parts not the 13 parts listed. PLEASE pay close attention here. I have marked the holes and corresponding parts placements. With RED ARROWS.

I would give this kit a 7 on a scale of 1-10 (1 terrible 10 perfect) A novice or intermediate builder could tackle this with ease as long as you correct the errors noted. The piece count being as is leaves building this kit straight forward.
