3 INERTING PROTOCOL Inerting a volume: Inerting a volume consists in replacing an unwanted gas (air or toxic substance) by an inert gas (i.e. nitrogen). This is done to avoid the degradation of the handled product, the oxygen content must generally be < 0,5%. Three methods can be applied to the enclosure: - Positive pressure cycle - Negative pressure cycle - Gas flushing. The positive pressure or negative pressure cycles are the most efficient. The principle is to place a volume successively under pressure with an inert gas and then decompress it to the air atmospheric pressure ( positive pressure cycle), or to create a vacuum and then restore pressure with an inert gas (negative pressure cycle). The most inaccessible gas pockets of the volume are in this way treated with the same efficiency as the main volume. However, these two methods can only be applied efficiently to enclosures that can resist to vacuum or pressure. For enclosures that can only resist to low pressure or negative pressure, flushing is the only method that can be used. Its principle is to introduce an inert gas into one end so as to repel the unwanted gas towards the other end. As far as the Captair pyramid is concerned, we recommend a combination of the three methods in order to obtain the most efficient result.
