3 1.1 What is a Cellarbuoy? The Cellarbuoy (AKA Fob Detector, beer monitor) is a mechanical device designed to keep product lines in equilibrium (full of beer from keg to point of dispense) by preventing gas entering the product line when the keg becomes empty. It prevents excess fob in the line and therefore reduces wastage of beer and down time on keg changeover. Cellarbuoy ll can be used universally in UK and European installations for use with beer, lager, cider & stout. 1.2 What is Fob? When beer is extremely gassy it is known as fob. Fob is essentially wasted beer and it takes time to drain this from the beer lines usually into a bucket at the point of dispense. Fob is caused by dissolved CO2 breaking out of solution due to low pressure or high temperature. A Cellarbuoy will save time & beer (in product lines & in mid-pour serving!) by reducing the creation of fob. 1.3 How does an IMIC Cellarbuoy Work? A normal beer supply is fed from the keg in the cellar, by pressurised gas (e.g. C02 or mixed gas), through the bottom inlet of the Cellarbuoy. (Note: a gas or electric pump may be used to propel the beer through the system where the cellar is a long way from the point of dispense). This fills the bowl assembly with beer and supports the float at the top of the chamber. The raised float allows beer to flow out of the side outlet through to the point of dispense, maintaining the float height. When the beer keg runs empty the float level will drop as the beer is replaced with gas in the chamber. When the float reaches the bottom of the chamber it physically cuts off the outlet to prevent excess fob from entering the system. A weight (or slug) in the bottom of the float ensures accurate alignment as it keeps it running centrally down the middle of the bowl assembly. Floats that contain a magnetic weight in the bottom can send signals via a reed switch to disable either a) beer pumps and/or b) solenoids in push button dispense fonts (otherwise they will continue to operate if activated as the keg empties. Signals can only be sent when the magnetic float version reaches the bottom of the chamber with reed switch model Cellarbuoy. When a full keg is connected, any fob / excess gas in the feed product line must be drained out of the top of the Cellarbuoy via the bleed valve until the product line & the chamber of the Cellarbuoy is full with product. When the chamber is full then press the plunger on the bottom of the Cellarbuoy to release the float. This raises the float back to the top of the chamber and beer is allowed to pressurise the top half of the system up to the point of dispense.

Look for the blue float with the tapered nose The bottom of the float has a male tapered nose (Teat shaped) to fit into a female seat in the bottom of the Cellarbuoy. This optimises the flow path and flow characteristics & avoids the float being pulled off centre. This means that the float seals the outlet port each & every time. Keg Empty with float at bottom of seat (no flow) Closed Open Keg replaced raising float when plunger pushed (flow) Seat Seat New push button bleed valve replaces the old 180 levered ball valve. Old version (lever type) lever valve could be left open when bleeding the lines. This would waste product directly out of the bleed until keg empties or bleed closed. New version (spring loaded push button type) Prevents accidental emptying of new keg by spring loaded automatic shutoff.

12 3.6 TECFLO - TecFlo Wall Fob Kegtappers TECFLO Wall Fob renowned high-tech Draught Foam Control device, the TecFlo, stops beer flow immediately after a keg empties, both at the key and the tap. This eliminates the spitting and spraying that usually happens when a keg "blows". And because the TecFlo keeps the supply lines full of beer, even when a keg blows, you get instant beer from a freshly tapped keg. That's right - no more time and money is wasted pouring off foam in order to get to the good stuff. Savings for businesses are astronomical. Independent testing by various North American Breweries has shown the TecFlo saves an average of one pitcher of beer per keg on a typical long-draw run, even greater savings for stadiums, airports, and hotels. Given that there are approximately 40 pitchers in a keg and based on a volume of 40 kegs per week - bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants would save one keg a week. That's 52 kegs a year! Owners see the return on their investment very quickly. 3.7 Stanwell Technic - Beer Flow Control System The Stanwell Technic FOB detector is designed to shut off beer flow when a beer container empties therefore eliminating product waste and ensuring that the beer line remains full and pressurised at all times. The FOB detector can be used as a manual or electronic operation for beer dispense. It has been specially designed by the Stanwell engineering team to offer a range of unique features to suit a range of needs: - Push Button or Flag bleed operation Choice of slide rail system or John Guest cartridge to secure inlet and outlet port fittings. Outlet ports to suit 1, 2, 3 or 4 to dispense taps 3.8 Scotsman Beverage Systems - MicroFob The MicroFob eliminates the fobbing and wastage that occurs when a beer tap is opened as the barrel becomes empty. Compact and robust design 6 Fl. oz. float chamber can be removed in-situ from base for cleaning purposes Sprung loaded 'Bleed valve' for ease of use and fail safe operation Bleed valve can be easily removed for cleaning purposes in trade Integral lug on chamber to prevent over tightening of seals within the base Visible ball lift lever to prevent accidental 'shut off' when cleaning Elimination of 'vortex' within the chamber and potential nuisance 'shut off' Can be installed left or right handed All parts in contact with fluids certified food quality Integral JG push in 3/8" and 5/16" fittings on inlets and outlets

IMIC Can offer a good price 4.2 How do I Clean a Cellarbuoy II? Cleaning fluid can be flushed through the product lines and Cellarbuoy, through to the point of dispense, then flushed through with water. To clean the float must be lifted off the seat This is done mechanically with a plunger which pushes the float up and out of its resting position The plunger is held in place with a new improved, strengthened red cleaning clip. When cleaning is complete the cleaning clip must be removed & the plunger pulled down to allow free movement of the float. A reminder sticker on the Cellarbuoy reads Important after releasing the float pull plunger down to ensure the float can shut of the inlet & outlet ports when the keg runs empty next time.
14 5.0 Miscellaneous information 5.1 System Gas / Product Line Schematics Gas Beer Bleed Fob Tube Distance: Short Short Short Long Scenario Equilibrium achieved with gas pressurised beer from keg to tap. 1. When keg empty the gas is prevented from passing through by the CB, leaving the product line full of beer from the CB up to the point of dispense. 2. Without a CB the remaining beer would turn to fob with increased gas pressure in the line. 1. Even if gas is stopped at the Cellarbuoy 2. If the tap is suddenly opened when beer line is in Equilibrium from CB to point of dispense, it will cause fob in the line. This fob will need to be drawn off at the point of dispense. Turn taps off &/or cut-off auto taps with reed switch. 1 / 2 / 3. When a new keg is connected the gas / fob must be bled off through CB vent by pushing the Bleed Valve until the beer flow fills the chamber of the CB. The plunger must then be pushed to release the float off the seat, opening the outlet port Keg Empty. CB Bleed valve works beer up to the CB. OK Equilibrium
15 5.2 Free Flow Tap System Free flow tap system 1) Gas Cylinder 2) Primary Regulator 3) Secondary Regulator 4) Keg Connector 5) Keg 6) Cellarbuoy 7) Ice bank cooler 8) Free flow tap Pipe Colour Key Grey - Co2 Gas Line Red - Product Line This is a basic free flow system incorporating a Cornelius Cellarbuoy unit in the product line circuit. This system is ideal for low throughput applications involving short distances from product storage area to point of sale. When the keg becomes empty the level of the product in the Cellarbuoy chamber will start to lower allowing the float to drop eventually sealing off the outlet port. Dispense will cease maintaining a full product line up to the bar valve reducing excessive wastage on keg changeover. When the new product keg as been connected prime the Cellarbuoy by gently opening the priming tap allowing product to completely fill the float chamber. Press the plunger situated on the bottom of the unit to release the float and reopen the outlet port. Dispense can now be resumed.
16 5.3 Pump Assisted Free Flow Tap System Pump assisted free flow tap system 1) Gas Cylinder 2) Primary Regulator 3) Secondary Regulator 4) Keg Connector 5) Keg 6) Gas or Electric Pump (pressure switch) (note: Electric pump can be placed before or after the Cellarbuoy but gas must be placed before it) 7) Cellerbuoy 8) Ice bank cooler 9) Free flow tap 3 A 13 amp supply will be required for an electric pressure switch pump option Pipe Colour Key Grey - Co2 Gas Line Red - Product Line 5 The pump assisted free flow system comprises of either a gas powered product pump or an electric pressure switch pump. Diagram 2 shows where the Cornelius Cellarbuoy sits in the system. This system is ideal for dispensing via longer distances from product storage area to point of sale. When the keg becomes empty the level of the product in the Cellarbuoy chamber will start to lower allowing the float to drop eventually sealing off the outlet port. Dispense will cease maintaining a full product line up to the bar valve reducing excessive wastage on keg changeover. The gas pump will stop running as its pressure set point is achieved. The electric pressure switch pump will require the reset button depressing after each keg change to reactivate the pump. When the new product keg as been connected prime the Cellarbuoy by gently opening the priming tap allowing product to completely fill the float chamber. Press the plunger situated on the bottom of the unit to release the float and reopen the outlet port. Dispense can now be resumed
17 5.4 Solenoid Tap System with Gas Pump Solenoid tap system With Gas pump 1) Gas Cylinder 2) Primary Regulator 3) Secondary Regulator 4) Keg Connector 5) Keg 6) Gas Pump 7) Cellerbuoy 8) Ice bank cooler 9) Solenoid taps 10) Control box 11) 13 Amp socket 12) Reed Switch amp cable volt cable Pipe Colour Key Grey - Co2 Gas Line Red - Product Line This is a Solenoid tap system including a Gas powered product pump in the product circuit. When the float in the Cellarbuoy product chamber drops due to the keg needing to be replaced a magnet in the base of the float operates the reed switch located in the bottom of the Cellarbuoy assembly cutting off the 24volt supply to the solenoids located in the bar valves. This causes the solenoids in the bar valves to close and seal the product lines at the point of sale. When the float drops it also seals the outlet port in the Cellarbuoy chamber. This maintains equilibrium within the product lines preventing fobbing after product keg replacement. When the new product keg as been connected prime the Cellarbuoy by gently opening the priming tap allowing product to completely fill the float chamber. Press the plunger situated on the bottom of the unit to release the float and reopen the outlet port. Dispense can now be resumed

When the float in the Cellarbuoy product chamber drops due to the keg needing to be replaced a magnet in the base of the float operates the reed switch located in the bottom of the Cellarbuoy assembly cutting off the 24volt supply to the solenoids located in the bar valves. This causes the solenoids in the bar valves to close and seal the product lines at the point of sale whilst also disabling the product pump. Dispense can now be resumed.
19 5.6 Bernoulli Effect & How it affects Fob Detectors P + ½ pv² + pgh = [constant] Product (e.g. Beer) is forced under pressure into the fob detector chamber via the inlet valve The liquid, in effect follows a path (swirls around inside the bowl) even when the chamber is full of liquid In the case of Ball Floats, the ball rattles until the ball is forced down so fast to the bottom of the chamber that it sits on the seat to shut off when the keg is still full Cylindrical float designs, as used in the (Cellarbuoy), Cellarbuoy II, Stanwell minimise the risk of outlet port shut off due to the Bernoulli Effect 5.7 Other Information Can work with multiple kegs of the same beer Not recommended, but a Cellarbuoy II can handle multiple taps, i.e. 4 of the same beer but with added risk of reduced pressure if a tap is left open on keg changeover Connections Concealed The higher the float the bigger the flow rate Stanwell is the closest to our IMIC Cellarbuoy II Metalcraft is another supplier of Metal Fob Detectors that are deemed more durable (plastic Fob Detectors can be used with Guinness)
