5 1. A C C E S S I B I L I T Y Please note: Depending on weather and usage, a Fibar surface will compact to provide access for wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, and wheeled vehicles within two to six weeks of installation. 2. V I S U A L I N S P E C T I O N Remove debris especially stones, broken glass, or other foreign objects. In heavily-used public parks, inspect frequently. 3. R A K I N G To download specifications and drawings on CAD format, go to ParksandRec.CADdetails.com Areas of constant wear and impact should be raked level. Pay particular attention to areas under swings, sliding poles, and at the base of slides. When a Fibar Systems installation is close to a sand pit, the sand may get tracked onto the Engineered Wood Fibre surface. This can change the impact attenuation of the Fibar Systems. The surface should be vigorously raked. Maintenance M A I N T E N A N C E I N S T R U C T I O N S 6. T O P - O F F Experience has shown us that installations typically require top-offs after three (3) years of use (in heavy-use playgrounds, maybe sooner). The legs of the equipment should have been marked according to the System depth when originally installed. It is, therefore, easy to determine when the surface of the Fibar Systems falls below this level and requires topping off with fresh material. If the equipment was not marked, the surface should be checked at several points by using a long-handled screwdriver marked in inches to determine the actual depth. Top-offs can sometimes be scheduled with other deliveries to minimize the freight cost. 4. W E A R M A T S To preserve your warranty, FibarMat wear mats must be installed under all swings, tire swings, and slide exits. They should also be installed at other excessive wear areas, including sliding poles. The preferred method is to place the mats on top of the Fibar Engineered Wood Fibre. They can also be placed in the middle of the Fibar or directly under the Fibar, on top of the FibarFelt fabric. If these wear mats were not ordered when you ordered the Fibar System, please call your local Representative or Fibar Systems or After a proper installation, regular maintenance includes topping-off with fresh Fibar to maintain the original specified depth. 5. W E E D S On playgrounds that only receive light usage, conditions could occur that might cause sporadic weed growth. In such instances, the situation can easily be remedied by the use of a safe weed killer (call your local Cooperative Extension office) or remove weeds by hand. 7. W I N T E R C O N D I T I O N S Should there be moisture retention in the Fibar Systems, it will freeze when the temperature drops below the freezing mark. Please check your surface in winter weather. When the surface is frozen, the play area should not be used. IF AT ANY TIME YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT THE SURFACE AND ITS PERFORMANCE, PLEASE CALL TOLL FREE OR Fibar surfacing is not simply wood chips or mulch; it's an Engineered Wood Fibre designed to meet today s play surfacing guidelines. 11 Questions & Answers C U S T O M E R Q U E S T I O N S 1. What exactly is Fibar? It is an engineered shredded wood fibre. 2. Why not just install wood chips? Fibar passes ASTM F2075 Standard Test for Engineered Wood Fiber for Use as a Playground Safety Surface Under and Around Playground Equipment. 3. Is Fibar accessible? Fibar passes ASTM F1951 Standard Specification for Determination of Accessibility of Surface Systems Under and Around Playground Equipment. The U.S. Department of Interior (DOI) has also ruled that wood fibre surfaces are accessible provided there is adequate drainage, they are installed correctly, and properly maintained. 4. Has burning been a problem? No, burning has not been a problem. Flammability test results are available from the home office. 5. What if broken glass falls on the Fibar surface? Broken glass and debris typically stay on top of the Fibar. They are easily removed by raking. 11. What about splinters? Dr. Voigt Hodgson, (who conducted the impact attenuation testing) of the Neurology Department of Wayne State University, said: No slivers were noted to occur personally or to an assistant despite extensive handling of the fibres. 6. Why spend more for a Fibar System? A Fibar System has benefits that look-alikes don t: a 25-year warranty (300 System); $15,000,000 product liability insurance. Fibar is successful because it includes a drainage system that is specially designed for playgrounds. (The U.S. Department of Interior says that good drainage is essential!) 7. How long does Fibar last? Fibar System 300 is guaranteed to perform for 25 years, provided the depth is maintained by occasional top-offs. Fibar does not decompose as mulch does. Test results show that after 12 years of use its impact absorbing qualities actually get better with age! 8. Is Fibar treated? No! Fibar wood fibre is not chemically treated and is totally natural. 9. What contains the Fibar? You can border with curbing for an above-ground installation or excavate to have the play area flush with the surrounding land. 10. Are insects a problem? No. Fibar is a manufactured product with thousands of installations nationwide. Insects have not been a problem. 12. How is Fibar maintained? Occasional raking as usage dictates is all that is necessary to keep the play area in good condition. According to usage, the area will need to be topped off periodically. Active playgrounds are usually topped off every three years. 13. How do I know that the Fibar Systems meet safety standards? Fibar is regularly tested in accordance with ASTM F1292 impact tests and ASTM F2075 Engineered Wood Fiber Standard. Fibar exceeds ASTM standards and CPSC guidelines.
